You claim, they (maybe) claim. By the time the IRS figures it out – if they ever do so – you will be enough years down the road to be earning enough to pay any penalties and taxes. You are not talking big bucks here (probably less than the lawyers/accountants fees) and it is likely worth doing, just avoiding the discussion altogether.

These people are crazy.

I have been watching this thread, but haven’t had more to add, since the suggestions here cover it all. Still, I have to wish you a happy wedding day! I will be very excited to hear all about it! God bless you both!

I second this!

It seems you and your spouse are going into the marriage with a great foundation of respect, love and understanding of each other. Great to know that your on the same page when it comes to the IL. HAVE A GREAT WEDDING and may God Bless your marriage!

Thanks, guys! I’m soooo excited! Here are pictures of my dress and my bridesmaid dresses. (I went with boleros for everyone for modesty)

Have a Happy Wedding Day!!!

Valium in MIL’s tea would start her day off right… FIL too… (joking)

What beautiful dresses! I do hope we get to see some pics afterward!

Blessings to you and your young man; may you have a lifetime of great happiness.

That’s where it gets all mushy in the eyes of the law and IRS.

He stayed with them in their home for the spring semester. He had his own place for the fall semester.

ILs paid for the remainder of the spring semester. He paid for his fall semester.

His summer was spent “abroad.” Yet his lease didn’t start until the fall semester.

So you see where this is going…

Also, the accountant advised us that only one person is allowed to get credit for educational purposes, so even though his parents paid and he paid, only one can claim. This means if his parents provide enough evidence supporting their right to claim him, he has to pay the taxes and penalties, return the refund he received and they will get the refund on their end.
Since he was a student, I assume his income was not at all substantial during that year. For that reason, whatever amount he “might” owe by filing an amended return will not be more than a couple of hundred dollars with maybe 50 bucks in penalties. Correct the error, pay the small amount of money, and forget about it…and tell his parents to stick it.

Keep in mind that FFIL would likely have to amend his own tax return at this point to claim your FH. Even if the IRS would allow the amendment at this point, your husband would not be looking at criminal sanctions for filing the return. At most he would owe some tax and penalty. That tax and penalty is certainly going to be cheaper than feeding the 200 people they invited.

Good luck to you.

Prayers for you and your future husband for a wonderful wedding day - do let us know how everything played out in the end after your honeymoon.

Now, take a deep breath and enjoy tomorrow with your family!

My daughter just got married in September. She planned everything down to the last detail–and we STILL had a few problems.
  1. My daughter paid for a make-up artist to come and air-brush our make-up on. This was to be done in her apt. between hair appts. The “second group” (including my daughter and myself) were in the car on our way to the hairdressers when he called her cell phone and said we had missed our appts! We evidently had appts. all at the same time–not staggered as she thought. Fortunately, her sister, who was in the car with us called HER hairdresser and got us 4 gals in all at once–no waiting!
  2. As the wedding photos were winding up, I was sent to check on the limo. There was only a sedan–for the bride and groom ONLY–I was told. I spoke to the best man who got on the horn and we had our limo there in 20 more minutes.
  3. (the biggie) One of the bridesmaids had divorced between the time she had been asked to be a bridesmaid and the wedding and had gotten herself a “girlfriend”. This posed a problem as the girlfriend dressed (and looked) like a guy! This was a formal, catered reception and we did not want to have to explain anything to the children at the reception about this “relationship”. Fortunately, the girlfriend did not come to the wedding, but she did come to the reception–and sat at the head table with the bridesmaid! At one point, one of the flower girls asked the son of the bridesmaid if the couple were his “mommy” and “daddy”. The boy said, “No!” and pointed to the bridesmaid and said, “THAT’S A GIRL,” and pointing to the “girlfriend”, “AND THAT’S A GIRL!” The flower girl was speachless and then the bridesmaid told her, “You need to talk to your mother.”
Other than that, the rest of the reception was fine.

I pray that everything will work out just fine for you. God Bless.

Your gown and bridesmaids’ dresses are lovely. We are planning our daughter’s June wedding now and also did not go strapless for modesty. The bolero idea is great!

God bless!

We are down to three days! WOW! I think you have most of CAF’s members as part of your own private cheerleading group and bride’s party!

I guess it’s to be expected that your thread would garner so many responses – btu even more so I hope WE all helped you knwo that this is not NORMAL behavior and we all have your back – spiritually and emotionally.

I have a very CRAZY family and my Dh has been so charitable to them. Even when I have said "ENOUGH’’ my Dh has tried to be “fair.” He finally had enough and gave an ultimatum, and we stuck by it. I have not seen my mother in over two years. I have so much peace in my life without her around.

Tax retruns -schmacks returns. Let it go. Small price to pay for this madness! As someone said: it’s cheaper than feeding 200 people! I have to send you a big cyber hug for the BIG way in which you handled this. I said it before and I’ll say it again: the mentality of which you are entering this marriage is FANTASTIC. You are going to be one fabulous WIFE and one FABULOUS mother…

And back to my original post – please don’t even tell your in-laws when you are pregnant! 😉

Big hugs – and we want PICTURES when you get home from your honeymoon!

OKay guys!!! I’m getting ready now, lol. Send prayers our way!
Ohhh how exciting!!!

Yesterday morning at Mass we there was a beautiful family sitting up front parents/their kids/grandkids etc. They were there to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the parents. It reminded me of you and your wedding coming up (around thanksgiving) and I prayed that your wedding may go well and that may be you and your husband (and family) 50 years from now 🙂
