EACH NEW DAY

Let me pause as I begin this new day to give it to You, Lord.
Before the tumult of activities breaks in;
before breakfast plates crash through my still sleepy mind;
for this last moment in my bed, thank you, Lord.

Let me hold Your promise of new life.
Keep me from slipping back
for I know that what is forgiven is as if it never were.
Each new day,
Your grace gives me a fresh start to walk in Your light again.

May the Lord support us all the day long,
till the shades lengthen and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over,
and our work is done.
Then in His mercy may He give us a safe lodging,
and a holy rest,
and peace at the last.

Blessed are the meek
  • It is difficult for most of us to conjure up an example that validates this blessing.
  • The background for this comes from Psalm 37 where the writer commended followers to trust in the power of patience and the wisdom of calm.
  • Biblical meekness is quiet perseverance in the face of brute rage; it is our staunch refusal either to lay down in submission or to rise up in violence before those forces that oppress us.
  • Three key elements in the definition of meekness:
    • Oppression: my enemy is any oppressive force that, by inches or yards, threatens to diminish me as a human being.
    • Perseverance: The meek are like water which is not hard to the touch, which seems to give way before other substances, but slowly rises, silently attacks, and calmly consumes, with patience over the years, the hardest of granites.
    • Nonviolence: The willingness to ensure the pain of oppression, steadfast in the belief that, as with any poison denied a place to take root, it will eventually, inevitably, dissipate, diffuse, and destroy itself.

Every day I need you Lord
But this day especially,

Beloved Father, please send Your Most Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to Trishie’s son that he may find peace during these incredibly difficult times. Help him, Lord, to act charitably towards those who persecute him, who cause him to suffer, and bring him so much heartache. Help him to discern Your will, and guide him, Lord, especially in the moments when he stumbles.
