Yes.

But to take the case in point of homosexuality - the beef is that as a catholic you cant publicaly declare homosexual acts to be an abomination against the Lord, or you risk being arrested for hate speech and public disorder.

Some Protestant rites hold there is nothing wrong whatsoever in a loving homosexual union.

What happens when these two meet in the metaphorical public square?

You would be effectively telling your comrade at arms, whos support you need and want to defeat the tyrany of secularism, their life is an abomination.

If you then move onto divorce etc the waters become stormier.
I understand what you’re saying. However, ecumenism works with similarities, not differences. Churches who uphold homosexual unions are not threatened by secularism so I seriously doubt whether they would even want to be ecumenical. Would they have any reason to be in the public square when the purpose does not serve their interest?

I understand what you mean but I can’t just show up to an event and start taking video. This is something you really need official support for ahead of time. I tried this once when my parish went to the pro-life march in DC and really felt people were uncomfortable with it, never again from me without complete knowledge and support.

I could go to to march on my own and videotape however but these kind of events are few and far between.

I think I have to accept at some point that maybe God does not want me in that role at all. I guess there are other ways I can help, maybe simply praying more.
Don’t give up too soon, mefriend. 🙂

I went to the March for Life on a parish bus, but after Mass, as a photographer went my own way and did my own thing during the rally and actual march. Took pictures, felt a bit like Peter Parker, just totally went into photojournalism mode and people somehow granted me the authority to do what I needed to do to get the shot. (Being mannerly helps!)

Here’s a link to the first of six blog entries containing this year’s March for Life. This entry focuses on “We the People.”

Don’t you hate the way We’re portrayed in the liberal media?Particularly a new comedy that mocks Christ and Christians on the Comedy Channel? That the Catholic Church is painted as evil personified in the media, etc. This doesn’t bother you?It doesn’t make you angry or concerned for the souls and salvation of those who calumnize Christ and us?Casual priest jokes on television and from "friends"who lash the 98.8% of innocent priests?doesn’t it want to make you do something rather than just complain to others who just nod their heads in sympathy?Secular governments who will indoctrinate your grade 3 children to believe SSA is normal, that homosexual genital sex is not disordered, that so-called same-sex marriage is a norm, that personal masturbatory experimentation with oneself and sex outside of marriage is good and wholesome. As they JUST attempted to do in my country and soon will in yours?
This is the kind of thing we should do something about instead of cowering behind our keyboards on a Saturday afternoon?wouldn’t it be more effective for 10,100,1000,10,000,100,000,1,000,000 Catholics to gather together and pray the Rosary and Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet publicly across our nations and shock the seculars and gather with our separated brethren to pray ecumenically, and publicly?A national day of prayer, annually, monthly, weekly,PUBLICLY?Don’t you think THAT would have a tremendous positive impact on our societies. It just has to start with two people and God guarantees He will be in our midst.
How did African-Americans gain a modicum of respect and equal treatment before the Law?By DEMANDING it.By Freedom Rides,Freedom Marches,by following the martyred Martin Luther King or the Indians get out from under disdainful racist English Imperialism-by following a gentle little man from South Africa-Ghandi.Christ is our example and we are called top be the Face of Christ to this scoffing world. We have the numbers let’s do something in the imitation of Christ that will save souls and bring respect back to Faith-All Faiths.
I hate to rain on your parade of enthusiasm for civil disobedience, but what exactly is the Church in America going to demand? In other words, to compare the current state of Catholicism in America to that of African-Americans in the Civil Rights era of the 1960s, Black South Africans under Apartheid, India under British domination, etc. is foolish.

After all, what are we going to demand? To be respected? That just sounds juvenile at many levels. After all, Catholics can vote (and then the majority vote against Catholic teachings in the secular sphere), our civil rights are respected and we can move around and do what we want freely in America. To compare our situation to that of Dr. King’s (who had to face down bullets, fire hoses, attack dogs, etc. in order to just get the right for African-Americans to vote and be treated as human beings) is, again, foolish and disrespectful to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

What you are proposing will just make Catholics look t(name removed by moderator)ot troublemakers since we have not made use of the instruments (i.e. voting) that are already available. If you don’t like what the media says about Catholics, then don’t listen to it. Remember, just as American Catholics are free to condemn homosexuality, the media is free to condemn what it wants. You can protest all you want, but what are you demanding? That the government shut down things you find offensive?

If you don’t like the drivel that is taught in schools, why have you not thought of running for school board? Or what about taking your kids and putting them into Catholic schools or homeschooling them?

Dr. King, Gandhi and the Black South Africans resorted to civil disobedience and other more radical groups (i.e. Black Panthers) resorted to violence because they did not have recourse through other channels. Until Catholics are willing to vote their faith, get involved politically and in other pressure groups and the like, Catholic civil disobedience would just be seen as an effort of a small group of people to make a lot of noise to cover for the apathy of the larger group.

EDIT: And please learn to use paragraphs. Dropping huge chunks of text does not lend itself to easy reading by others. Remember that, often, regardless of how good/right your message might be, if it is hard to read or comes across as incoherent, it will be quickly ignored and/or relegated to the level of random ranting.

Be careful, in Canada (and soon here) that could be construed as hate speach!
I will be summoned to a kangaroo court,of course have my freedom of speech rights abrogated and be found guilty with a $15,000 to $30,000 dollar fine which I will refuse to pay and be jailed, with common criminals.

I’m with you, and I will gladly stand shoulder to shoulder with you against this new tyranny that is taking over our countries. The more power the government assumes to itself, the worse and more tyrannical it will become.

Many of the Catholics who supported Obama were / are quite active in the church’s social justice campaigns and non-violence movements inspired by the gospels, Thoreau, Tolstoy, Ghandi, the Catholic Worker, Jacque Maritain, Thomas Merton and others - many of whom those on this thread hold with great distain.

If you are going to organize around issues in the film or pop culture industries - be cautious. All films - even some of the R-rated can be quite helpful if understood through a sophisticated hermeneutic. We don’t want the Catholic appreciation and sensibility for art to be lost amid an un-nuanced attack on the pop culture industries.

Perhaps one of the best things you can do is help young people and young adults develop a more critical view of pop culture. Even some “enemies” have good things to contribute to this. For example I found a very good resource to deal with pornography through the N.O.W. website - a Communications professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst made a very sophisticated documentary in the early 1990’s exposing MTV’s exploitation of women. He was later sued by MTV but won on free speech grounds.

I showed the documentary to my high school juniors at the time - many really agreed with his portrayal - a rarity to be sure among adolescents!

Be prudent - you know - wise as as serpents…

Thanks for the critique!I note that my incoherence didn’t prevent you from making a rather long-winded,quite mistaken albeit, paragraphically correct reponse to my post and thanks for the ad hominum too. That’ll teach me!

For those on this thread who are unsure about following the OP in “doing something” let me share with you how he interacts with others on threads other than this one-perhaps it will help you to decide.
I wasn’t referring to specific incidences of his personal boorishness and you are quite literate enough to realize that. You are making a personal ad hominum attack accusing me of bluster and comparing me to a personality that you, historically, specifically and particularly find odious and repulsive;how much more personal can you get?.
I refuse to sink to your level and reply in a similar manner.Personal attacks upon other posters are against fora rules and I am taking measures to ensure that they are dealt with
Something like,“Mommy,mommy!!!Non Serviam’s teasing me,make him/her stop”!!!
Something kinda like that anyways.😉

I’m sure the posters on this thread are fully capable of judging for thenselves regarding my deportment on this and other threads and once again you are attacking me personally and making me the subject of discussion rather than the topic at hand.

I wasn’t reacting with “others” on threads other than this one-I was reacting to YOU Non-Serviam and that COULD be why your ticked.I have grown weary of your personal attacks on me and have asked that an intervention occur in order that we can return to discussing issues rather than personalities and mutual distaste which is unChristlike asnd has no place on Catholic Fora. Now,may we return to the discussion at hand?.These squabbles are like baseball fights-a lot of fists flying, bodies tumbling and clouds of dust but it isn’t particularly entertaining when one wants to watch/play baseball.

I am quite active; I will be attending the March for Life in D.C. and am in a pro-life activism group, thank you.

Right now, we are in the midst of a movement not unlike the civil rights movement. Years from now, the people of the pro-life movement will be heroes, the advocates of the voiceless. I do not pretend to be one of the heroes, but I certainly am trying to get involved.

I used to be a coward. In a very real way I still am, but far less so. Now I’m proud of my faith!

You are doing EXACTLY as ALL of should be.We must be VISIBLE Catholic and non-Catholic Christians and proudly and defiantly take our rightful place in the public square. You’re no coward and nor are you COMPLICIT in the crimes taking place through personal silence
This is EXACTLY what I was getting at when I started this thread. When Caesar presumes too much PUSH BACK even at the expense of your popularity, freedom,or life if necessary. Those early Christians who were torn apart by wild beasts for the amusement of Pagans bought us our Faith in Blood as did HE WHO IS-I AM-CHRIST and we have an obligation for HIS sake to DO something. He doesn’t care if it’s small, huge or even successful. As Mother Theresa said "it’s the trying, not the doing-the doing is up to God but we are all expected to participate.

Please more suggestions(constructive please)on what we can personally and collectively do.

My son and I will be attending the March for Life in Ottawa our Nation’s Capitol May 13 and 14.I am overjoyed that he and and I(he is 15)will be witnessing for Christ and the unborn with thousands of other Canadians to appeal to our Legislators to end Canada’s shame and implement Abortion Law.We will be attending conferences and workshops on the very subject of this thread and I hope to be able to share with you events that happen and pictures I will take as you won’t see this event on any North American secular media.

In the future,.when we have won this battle(abortion)subsequent generations will look back at these
forty plus years of bloodshed, horror and human sacrifice as the equivalent of the African Holocaust of Slavery, the Jewish Holocaust, the Enforced Famine in Ukraine, the Massacre in Katya Forest, the Armenian Holocaust, the Cambodian Holocaust, the Rwandan Holocaust. They will look back in horror and revulsion at those responsible and those complicit through their silence;except THIS TIME no one can say I didn’t KNOW.

We are figuratively being marched off to concentration camps. You are exactly right we can’t afford for one moment longer to sit on our hands. We must be like our Elder Brothers at Masada-They lost-but they won.
Oj! Very!

Oh! Soutane!
We go to defend Christ,
Our Lord.

I very, very much appreciate the compliment. Thanks!

As for what people can do…

The pro-life, specifically anti-abortion, movement is the most significant event happening in the country (mine is U.S.A.), and arguably the world, today. MILLIONS of babies are being brutally slaughtered EVERY YEAR for purposes of convenience. This is not a fringe thing done only by lunatics, like terrorism, nor is it illegal, like human trafficking. It is GOVERNMENTALLY LEGAL SLAUGHTER. And for what? The convenience of the mother?

It HAS to stop. Has to. We can’t allow a group of people like this to be killed, undefended, unloved, and unborn. We must do EVERYTHING possible that we can to stop this almost unfathomable horror to continuing. And there ARE ways to do it. Go to a pro-lfe march. Protest outside of abortion centers. Join, or start, a pro-life group. Do everything you can to expose planned parenthood, a horrific institution that promotes evil and does it under the guise of helpful counseling for women. They are one of the worst institution existing today and possibly EVER. The murders they are indirectly responsible exceed those killed by Hitler. They MUST be stopped.

Do your part! We can stop this evil!

When you are standing before God at your final Judgement with Christ as your Mediator I’ll bet He quotes your EXACT words on this post to the Father. We need more Catholic and non-Catholic Christians like you.If we ALL presented Christ’s face to the world the changes we could achieve in HIS name would be breathtaking.
I personally believe because of our crisis in the Church and our persecution as Christians that the winds of change through the Holy Spirit will rip through our Divine Gift(the Holy Catholic Church)and the remnant of Christianity.Prayer, action and Christ. We cannot fail-it is an impossibility but like our Salvation we MUST participate.
St Augustine said"God who made us without our help will not save us without our consent".That goes for our salvation and our present day struggle against the persecution of Faith and Christ.
St Theresa of Avila has an interesting quote which aptly and succinctly sums up our relation to the world at this time-“A bad night in a bad inn” and we must remember ESPECIALLY me that"Apart from Jesus all else is straw".St Thomas Aquinas.

This whole thread reminded me of that poem by Roger McGough:

"I wanna be the leader
I wanna be the leader
Can I be the leader?
Can I? I can?
Promise? Promise?
Yippee I’m the leader
I’m the leader

OK what shall we do?"

:D:D:D
No, he’s feeling the Holy Spirit’s calling, as many of us are, to do something, taking pot shots at him is uncalled for, shows that you cannot form a logical debate, and I enjoy his enthusiasm, he’s not luke warm, “the bulk of believers are Luke warm!!!” and even if he sais something that’s not perfect, he’s saying something towards a positive direction regardless, be it needs some rough edges ironed out. Post one, title one, I really wanted to say the same thing, and have verbally, myself, have been put through total hell with this absolutely sick world we live in, hell yes, let us speak up, it’s about fricken time we do!!!

It is really not very difficult to understand Soutane’s OP and I quite agree with his rallying cry that we do something other than whinge and moan. There is so much that we can do and Soutane’s OP only requests that we become more proactive, individually or collectively.
  1. If a news article is seen offensive, then by all means write to the paper to comment on it. We discuss about many news articles here, whinge and moan about them, so we just extend that effort just a little bit further in the direction of the Editor’s desks. Afterall, to exclusively whinge and moan here would be akin to preaching to the choir.
  2. If abortion is an issue one feels strongly against, rather than whinge and moan about it, support pro-life initiatives.
  3. If legislation infringes on one’s religious conscience, then write or speak to your political respresentative. Monitor each case that comes before the courts, be and stay informed to keep ahead. Complacency is what got us in this mess in the first place.
  4. If employers exercised unfair treatment of an employee because of their faith convictions, start or join a protest against the employer in support of the employee.
  5. If you feel that your children’s education and welfare are compromised by secular legislation which runs contrary to your religious convictions, by all means, send them to a faith school. Be involved in that school as a parent or board member.
  6. If you live on this side of the pond, try to be part of the welcoming committee for the Holy Father’s Papal visit. He needs our support as much as we need him.
  7. Support your Parish, Parish Councils and community. Offer to escort or give a ride to the elderly or disabled Catholics who wish to go to Mass but are unable to because of disability etc.
  8. Support a seminarian, individually or collectively. We need good priests!
The above are just a few ways in which we can become visible Catholics and I am sure some here are already doing one or two (or more !) of the above but, feel free to add.

Who here has the power to convience others? What can nothingness add but more nothingness? Why do we look to ourselves for the solution? How many of us go to God for our problems and put our trust in Him? How many of us have a sit down for adoration, and how many of us plan out our days around Christ? How can we expect to make a difference when we ignore daily the Mass which is given in order to make that difference that we so want to see in the world? We want to go out and convict the world of sin before we cast the beams from our own eyes? Indifference is wrong but is humility the same as indifference? What good will puffed up chests yelling at the top of their lungs do for this world? Will it do more than one communion made at Mass?

A Catholic call to action is a call to the Mass! What more could you do for this world…NO what better thing could you do for this world than offer Our Blessed Lord as a sacrifice to the Father for the world and for ourselves? Why is this action which was first among the Saints in life and during troubles the last among us?

And after Mass, we are told: “The Mass is ended. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.” Do we simply sit and wait for the next Mass or do we go and make our Catholic faith visible by conduct?
