For the married, is it permissible to send intimate photos to your spouse?

Historically there’s been a sense that it’s sinful for married couples to take “too much” pleasure in marital relations. The reality is that, until St John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, much of the Church has viewed sex as a vulgar, dirty necessity tolerated only for the sake of pro-creation.
Wow, way to overgeneralize among billions of Catholics, dude. Do you honestly think that married couples in general didn’t enjoy sex until Pope JPII wrote a book saying it was okay?

Father,
I never said it was magisterial teaching… but it’s been a constant undercurrent of Catholic thought in some circles. Wasn’t it St Augustine who said that it’s almost impossible to not at least sin venially even in the context of marital relations? Some of the Fathers definitely had a very dim view of sex in general. St John Paul II tried to correct some of these currents of thought in our tradition.

You are tyring to mold the Catechism to fit your position and you are equating sending an intimate picture to a spouse as porn. FALLACY
That is not at all what I’m doing. I’m talking about the principle behind what the catechism is saying.
Again, you guys are getting hung up on the digital issue.
I repeat, the digital part of this is not that important to my argument. If you took a Polaroid, it would still be wrong for the same reasons. Once it is a photograph, it is no longer intimate. It is literally making an object of the other person.

This assumes that if you send an intimate picture to your wife, you don’t love her and that you are objectifiying her. FALLACY
You might love your wife, but engaging in behavior which objectifies her is not loving of itself. Just saying that you love her doesn’t make objectification right.

if you can’t represent my arguments fairly, then I can’t assume good faith on your part, and thus I cannot continue the discussion.

What in my posting history makes you think I am “anti-tradition”?
I’m referring to Jansenist and even gnostic views of sexuality that some traditionalists mistake as Catholic orthodoxy.
FYI - I agree that sending intimate photographs of anyone to anyone, married or not, is wrong.

Did you miss the part of this where I said the technological aspect is not that important to my point? I’m not talking about privacy and consequences, I’m talking about the ordering of the act.
I didn’t miss it. But I also saw this
It’s that you or your spouse are taking what rightly belongs in the bedroom between you and making a record of it and abstracting it from its proper context.

Some things aren’t meant to be photographed.

And that’s exactly my point. It doesn’t matter if it’s digital or not. I’m not getting hung up on the digital. So stop saying that I am.

It obviously is a big issue for you. Photograph, whether digitle or real, shouldn’t matter.
Do we need to take down all regular pictures of my wife because it objectives them as a mother/wife/daughter,etc? In the same why these regular picture reflect my wife as those things, an intimate picture (between us) reflects her as my flesh

I don’t know your posting history, but it was worded in such a way as I thought it appeared to intend to make traditionalists look bad where there may be people holding such views, but they aren’t traditional views and they aren’t the views of the historic church and the number of people who hold them are probably akin to the number of people who offer latria to Mary in place of hyper-dulia. I wouldn’t call those people traditional either.

I apologize for calling you anti-tradition and presuming malice. Please forgive me.

Actually it seems like this is a much bigger issue for you than for the priest, because it appears to pertain to something you and your wife like to do and you don’t want to give that up or think more deeply about whether it’s really a good idea. You just want to be told it’s okay to keep on doing, apparently.

I’m sorry that I wasn’t clear. What I meant was that you are getting hung up on the picture. Because it seems that you think that a picture takes away the intimacy. That is only true if someone else sees the picture. There are safe guards against this

If you had read my responses, I have said my wife and I don’t do this. I have never sent here an intimate picture and she has never sent me one. It isn’t something that we would do. Not because I think it is wrong, but it isn’t our personalities. I’m discussing objectively the action because I don’t think anything in Church teaching condemns the practice.

OK, so now according to you, Father can’t ever tell anybody that a sexual practice with their wife is sinful because it’s not right for him to suggest that a practice that somebody thinks is loving might actually be a sin?

I feel really bad for our priests trying to advise anybody on morals when they get responses like that.

Really a mischaractetizatiin if out tradition. The idea of sex always being dirty or vulgar. This thought is relatively new, almost always a bleed over from Puritans, calvinists, or the Victorian age Protestants.

Some if us are old enough to remember when jokes about Catholics having too many kids had nothing to do with contraception, but rather implies we liked sex too much.

BTW, I have read all if the original ToB, it’s not about sex at all, rather about marraige.

No offense Father, but you aren’t married. Me playing intimately with my wife by sending a picture is not objectifying her. As my earlier post said, it would be the exact opposite. It is a build up to the marital embrace. It helps me to see her how she really is when I have desires to be with her but can’t. It is a practice of virtue.
Oh please.
Let’s be real here. It’s a sexual practice you and your wife like to do. It’s not a “practice of virtue” to see how long you guys can drive each other crazy without committing a sin. You’re doing that because you find it titillating. You don’t like the idea of having your candy taken away.

Don’t frame it up as a big spiritual thing.
If you would have read my earlier post, you would see that my wife and I practice NFP “religiously”. We take it very seriously. NFP definitely increases the virtues in our marriage.

No shame in calling it as I see it. You’re the one who decided to turn this into a big public challenge of a priest, and you’ve been rather uncharitable to him on several responses as well.

If you have no reason to accuse me, then why on earth did you??

I’m out.

Let me explain.

I do not have anough data to claim you “intrude in places you have no place” (I would like more instances to claim this as FACT) I actually completed a course on Statistics (Six sigma) this week and I think my instructor would agree.

On the other hand considering your post I specifically responded to, I stand very much by if we only take that sample into account. But also, I am not responding to “you” just the response and how it should be seen.
