To me a discussion will always be favorable to a mere listing of talking points. In a discussion both sides can get into the nitty-gritty and point out conflicts, ask questions to turn generalities into specifics, and really get a complete understanding of things. I always appreciated that of CAF.

I’m sticking around to the end, but to those that I might not see between now and then I want to give a big thanks!

So long CAF, you were so much better than CARM and Beliefnet. 🐠 🐡 🐟

I’ve been here basically the whole time, and I will miss many things about CAF. Where will I ever walk into the mind of another Catholic in a relatively open way about things that matter? Not that things here are as they used to be, but still, it was at least a small crumb. I shall cast myself upon the waters of polite IRL non-communication.

Forward into the long darkness of banishment at last!

Note to CAF: CAF you are in part wrong about the support and the signing up for the special patron forum. I am in one of your large donor clubs (President’s?) and have supported you since before you went on the shortwave radio even (I got a free radio from you 😜). Yet I did not make separate donations to your patron forum. So don’t allow yourself to remain long feeling that we are all here “for free”. More of us care than you probably realize. I came here in the first place only because Karl wrote that he was setting it up in a donation letter. Well, anyway, on to new frontiers!

You may be correct . People do sometimes think they can know what is best for strangers over the internet, but I do not know which type of assumption is most charitable.

This I agree with. A friend (Catholic) in her words asked why are people asking strangers questions about their most intimate personal issues. I personally don’t understand either, not being uncharitable here rather than wondering why not discuss with someone who has more knowledge and detail of that persons issue/lifestyle that can help them in a more individualized way.

Yes, I was always a little mystified that people would post their most personal problems on a public internet forum. But maybe they had no one else to talk to. I was usually hesitant to attempt answers though, for fear of misunderstanding or making the situation worse.

The fact that they are strangers is exactly what may make it easier. If they confide in someone in real life they worry that it may impact their relationship, or that the person will think less of them.

Or the other end of the scale, they don’t really know their priests or other Catholics they trust to give good advice.

Ironically, it’s often because a public forum like this site offers them better anonymity than other options that they have available to them.

Not everyone has a trusted confidant that they can confide with, especially in regards to religious issues.

If anyone is interested join Catholics Around The World. It has a forum, groups and a way for single Catholics to meet.

One final thought occurs to me… If the ‘community’ built here isn’t of the type that people are willing to exchange username info and put in the minimal effort necessary to find and link to another platform to communicate on, what kind of ‘community’ is it, really? What are people mourning? So if the ‘community’ here really wants to remain a community, they can move together to another location. And if they don’t… well, what kind of ‘community’ was really lost, anyway?
So far the majority of CAF posters that I have seen haven’t signed up for any of the replacement forums. There is a core group of 200-300 who have done so, and new sign-ups are slowing.

I’m really going to miss this board. I very thankful for all the great conversations, debates, and - well fun - I’ve had thanks to CAF, and the great folks here. Thanks to all my Catholic friends (moderators and posters) for accepting and putting up with this Calvinist. I really will miss you all. Thank you for being the iron that has sharpened my faith. God bless you all.

Forgot the link for @TULIPed and anyone else who wants to carry on next year.

Working list of alternative Catholic forums and similar media Evangelization
I would like to begin keeping a list of alternative Catholic forums to replace this one due to the impending shutdown of CAF on December 31, 2020. There are no forums that are near substitutes for CAF in terms of the size or volume of posts. This is actually a good thing IMHO. Thus, what follows is a list of smaller forums for your consideration. Take some time to consider supporting one or more of them. Please ensure that additions to this list are in communion with the Holy See. There are m…

Stunned to learn this forum is closing. It’s been a lifeline for many of us over the years and I think of us as family.

Unfortunately, I am one who can’t afford to be a paying member. I’m on SSI and finances are extra tight during this pandemic.

I pray a solution can and will be found to keep it open.

If not, I have a group on Facebook people can join if interested and am an admin on several other Catholic FB groups. PM me for info since I’m not sure they’ll allow me to post the link here.

Which group is getting the most CAF poster signups?
I wouldn’t be able to give a definite answer because I am not (yet) registered on all of the sucessor forums. However there are about 300 on St. Isidore’s Lounge, and another large group on Catholic Common Sense. The link counts on this post give you some indication of which forums are drawing the most interest:
