I’ve been here since 2011 and I still don’t understand the curmudgeons. Is it impolite to ask?
Speaking of this feeling, I have been wondering about the Prayer Intentions sub-forum for years now, but felt like this was impolite to ask…

Can somebody explain to me why relatively minor prayer requests that are time-limited (e.g. I hurt my back, I need a refund on a product, my computer is acting up) still get daily responses four years later and rack up thousands of replies? I don’t get it.

God transcends time. Knowing that someone would pray in the future, He could allow that prayer to be effective when the problem occurred in the past.

I’m sorry to see it go. I’ve enjoyed checking in. Does anyone know whether the Catholic Answers Facebook page will go away as well?
That site is blatantly anti-Catholic. It’s a travesty that they’ve been allowed to use this long revered name.

I wonder if Catholic Answers could sue them for breach of copyright or something.

Who, Facebook?
Well, I understand that Zuckerberg fellow has done pretty well for himself…

But seriously, [insert blurb about not being a lawyer here] I would think a cease and desist letter would be more in order. If this is just someone running an anti-Catholic Facebook site out of a corner of the basement rec room or something, very possibly there would be nothing there to gain in a lawsuit — the objective would be to get them to stop using the name, not doing anything punitive (which would be arguably un-Christian). It would be very difficult to prove any injury, and a bishop’s right to regulate the word “Catholic” notwithstanding (as happened with Church Militant), the word is not trademarked.

cease and desist letter
But directed to who?.. Who is misusing the Catholic Answers trademark in your view?

“Catholic” is not a trademark (it cannot be, because secular judges have no jurisdiction to decide who is or isn’t Catholic) but “Catholic Answers,” as the name of a specific charity, does have trademark protection (even though it is a charity and is not actually trading for profit).

Are you all referring to this page? CA is not discontinuing their Facebook presence. But there are so many trolls and uncharitable people commenting on Facebook that CAF looks like Equestria or the Kingdom of Caring by comparison.

So I can totally understand why you might think that that Facebook page is unofficial. But no, that is indeed CA’s official Facebook presence. The problem is that Facebook, like all mainstream social media, is a cesspool.

Oh, I see now. Yes, that is not the real CA Facebook page. I agree that CA should consider a C&D if they are misusing the name.

Edit: I don’t have a Facebook account so I am limited in what I can see. But that particular site is not anti-Catholic and does not appear to be misusing the name. You probably saw another site that was totally different. This inherent confusion about origin is one of many problems with “Fakebook.”

Oops!

It looks like the site I noted (and which I have removed from my post) is, indeed, a site in defense of Catholicism. Shouldn’t be using the CA name, but on its own, looks pretty innocuous. Evidently the problematical site is something else.

Well, R.I.P. and all that … but I certainly hope the site owners aren’t laboring under the delusion that most people were interested in this site for any reason OTHER than the forums. As goes it, so will shortly go the whole domain.

? 🤔

You are aware that the Catholic Answers apostolate is primarily an apologetics apostolate, right? They run a live radio show and have highly credentialed staff apologists who write books and articles, speak at conferences and so on?

I was a fan of Catholic Answers years before I even realized the forums existed, and I’ll continue to read and view Catholic Answers content long after the forums close this December.

And now that they’re not wasting their donors’ money subsidizing these forums (which weren’t even paying for 10% of themselves), I’m sure Catholic Answers will continue to do just fine. Their regular website (Catholic.com) is much more helpful than these forums anyway (it’ll only be you missing out if you choose to avoid looking up information there!), and someone mentioned publicly available information of Catholic Answers bringing in donor income of over $8M/yr. And that was definitely not coming from these forums (which apparently, even with patrons and ad revenue, weren’t even close to breaking even, so the forums were a loss for them, not a gain).

So again. I think they’ll be fine. I’m sure they appreciate your concern though!

It’s been great meeting everyone, even though I jumped on the train at the very end. God bless y’all!

I have posted recently but was seldom here even during this pacdemic lockdown thing. Sad to read this news. I am thankful for all the help i have received for more than a decade now from this forums.

Where else can we go to for Catholic forums? I dont know any except for this one. Any recommendations? Thank you

I’m glad it’s closing. It didn’t bring out the best in me and was certainly not spiritually edifying.
I feel the same way. There was much good that I learned here over the years and I am grateful for the forum, though I have come to realize it did not always bring about the best in me and many things were said by others and by me that I found to be upsetting and far from Catholicism or Christian love.

I actually have been in prayer a lot over probably the last year, asking God to lead me in better, more peaceful, way of learning the faith and fellowshipping with Catholics. This will make it easier and a blessing.

I have asked for many prayers here over the years and I am ever so grateful for members praying for my requests. Thank you very much.

I advise others to study the faith through the Scriptures and the many Catechisms available from the Church.

The points CAF made for closing, based on the opinions they received, are a good reason for closing:

Opinions about the merits of the CAF range more widely than those concerning any of our other works. Some find them helpful, others contentious, others find them addictive, and still others find some of the content not suited to an apologetics apostolate and some of the content better suited to private spiritual direction and sacramental confession.

God bless everyone. Pray the rosary and pray for the Church. 📿
