I know this isn’t the first thread that has been posted on him, but rather than talking about a particular story related to Jesuit priest Fr. James Martin, I just wanted to feel get people’s general feelings about him? Is your vibe positive, negative, or somewhere in the middle?

To be honest I didn’t know a whole lot about him until more recently when I read a few news pieces on him and then decided to look him up further. I must say I am deeply concerned with some of the stuff he has said in regards to LGBT issues. . . .

What he’s doing, . . . in my opinion, isn’t okay. He is actively promoting the gay lifestyle, telling gay couples they should be allowed to kiss each other in church, saying that chastity should not apply to them etc. How can a priest who is trying to lead his flock off a cliff, not be reprimanded for it? . . .

Evidence? Not inferences you have drawn. Evidence?

Do you want me to post the clips of him saying he hopes one day it will be normal for gay couples to kiss in church and that they should not have to remain chaste?

Happy to do so, I just thought it was common knowledge that he has done so.

I think he is a very astute and canny commentator on the state of LGBT-Catholic relations. I think it was a genius PR move for Pope Francis to appoint him to whatever he is now. He is unquestionably exactly the right Jesuit for the job.

I think he has a very even temper and a great deal of patience for abuse and hatred. It is a rare cocktail on social media, and makes his opponents hate and revile him all the more. He has a very Christ-like attitude, meeting people where they are and loving them no matter what.

I don’t think it is necessary at all for him to ‘come out’ as gay, or cop to any of the heresies he’s being accused of, or admit anything he doesn’t want to. I think his words and actions speak volumes about his character and beliefs, and if people are frustrated that he won’t say what they want him to say, then that’s just too bad for them.

Not everyone is a Catholic, or an American, or very concerned about gay issues. I was serious when I asked for evidence because it seemed to me unlikely that a priest allowed to continue as a priest would have actually said what you attributed to him. So please…

Christ like? Christ did not affirm homosexuals in their sin.
Did Christ affirm the adulterous woman in her sin?

I’m not sure you’re understanding what I said. Fr. James Martin affirms the sinner and sin.

I am not sure you’re understanding what Jesus does, or what I said.

he would get no attention if he wasnt a priest. There are many jesuit priests who are displeased with the liberal ideology of some jesuits in the usa, but they ride out their off the path thinking , grow old and fade away as do some of the very feminist nuns who thought they were going to have an impact and didnt, concerning thinking they were going to become priests…the weeds among the grain…

Will do, later when I have time, if the OP doesn’t get there first.

As requested

(Him saying he hopes that one day gay couples will be able to kiss in church and not have to feel uncomfortable about it)

(In 2.00 to 2.45 of the clip he says gay people are not bound by the church’s teaching on chastity because they ‘have not received it’). Some people here are not keen on Church Militant as a source for Catholic news, but the recording of him saying it is in their video.

Neither does Fr. Martin condemn them. Go in peace.
He also gives explanations for why it’s okay. This is the problem. It’s one thing not to be judgmental about the sins of another person and completely another to try and excuse them.

What if the only priest a gay man listens to is Fr. Martin? What if this man has tuned out the conservative clamor of bishops and pastors and hangs on every word of this reviled Jesuit? What if people on Twitter think the Church really can’t be so bad if such an admirable man can be her spokesman?

What if some of us believe that there is a place for everyone in the Church, and we’ll gladly make room in the pew for 1-2 more sinners?

What if people with homosexual compulsions hear that engaging those desires is not a sin, and end up in hell? People need the truth, not lies. Truth will effect true conversion. Lies will effect only complacency, not real conversion.
