Fun facts to ponder

How about annoying false “fun facts”?

My most hated false “fact” is the claim that a month with 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays, and 5 Sundays happens once every 823 years. In fact, it happens on average once a year (whenever the 1st of a 31-day month falls on Friday), although there are some years where it happens twice (January and July 2016, for example) and some years where it does not happen at all (2018).

Now here’s an interesting fact that is true: Given any pattern of “three fives” for one of the 31-day months, it will repeat in a definite pattern: 6 years, then 5 years, then 6 years again, then 11.

So take for example, the month of May. In 2009, May had 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays, and 5 Sundays (May 1st was a Friday). It happened again in May 2015 (6-year gap), and will happen again this year (5-year gap), in May 2026 (6-year gap), and then in May 2037 before starting the cycle over again.

Of course a non-leap century year like 2100 will mess this up.

Facts are much more interesting than falsehoods!

A lady in Britain Fed her cat aloe vera as a supplement. The cat lived to the age of 32.

Champagne and sparkling wines are too acidic to pair well with milk or dark chocolate. Try pairing a sweet bubbly with white chocolate and red wine with dark. In general you want to match the sweetness level of the wine with the sweetness level of the chocolate.

The number Pi has been calculated to 31 trillion digits.

Someone obvious had too much computer time available.

At this point of my life, the only Pi I care about is the one that divides nicely by 8 and is served on a plate.

One of my friends and colleagues, Paul, has the initials PI and was born on March 14 (3.14).

Yes, he does, actually.

He also celebrates PI day (since it’s his birthday). Special occasion on March 14, '15 at 9:26:53+ AM.

The poem “Cadaeic Cadenza” spells out, through word lengths, the digits of pi to 3853 places.

It’s the longest such poem, but there are others. A simple one is:

PIE

I wish I could determine pi
Eureka cried the great inventor
Christmas pudding Christmas pie
Is the problem’s very center.

The Catholic Church has been a plot device in several horror movies, particularly The Exorcist. The Church actually participated with the production. The technical advisor was Rev. William O’Malley, a Jesuit priest and teacher.

Red-tape is a Vatican invention.

In the 1500s, while the current Vatican was being built, official correspondence was rolled up in scroll form and tied with red ribbon, then sealed with wax. The Vatican Libraries still have numerous original scrolls bound in their original red tape!

Swiss Guards have served for several European courts since the early 16th century and even became notorious for being mercenaries for several years. Nowadays, the term “Swiss Guards” mostly refers to the Pontifical guards of the Holy See. To become qualified as a Swiss Guard, a member must be a Swiss male, Catholic, 19-30 years old, and at least 5′ 8.5″ tall. They must also have completed military training in Switzerland. The Swiss Guards are probably the oldest active military unit in the world.

Three popes were under the age of 25. The last was Pope Gregory V, who was 24 when elected in 996.

I wonder if the Swiss Guards are as patient as the guards in Buckingham palace when it comes to annoying tourists.

They are very restrained with tourists from what I saw, except for the one guy who hopped a barricade as Pope Francis was entering St. Peter’s square. He got his butt kicked fast.

Sorry…just realizing that wasn’t really a fun fact.
You all are looking for fun facts.

Fruit stickers are edible.

Any facts are fun if most people aren’t aware of them! Just don’t want anybody starting serious debates in this thread.

During the Mexican American War of 1846-1848, Father Anthony Rey served in the army of General Zackary Taylor. Father Rey administered to American troops with Last Rites and care of the wounded. He was present at the Battle of Monterey in which he earned admiration for his bravery. Father Rey also ministered to local Mexican Catholics. He was warned by U.S. Army officers against this practice due to guerilla and bandit activity outside U.S. camps. However, Father Rey accepted the risk nonetheless for the good of souls. He would die doing the work of his Master in 1847 in the Mexican countryside being found dead of multiple lance pierces.

The most thankful day in the American calendar year (Thanksgiving) is followed by the most materialistic day in the American calendar year (Black Friday)…(the same hands that joined together in prayer over a meal the day before, were the same hands fighting for their share of the loot!)
