This is not how it is covered in the Voter’s Guide provided by the US bishops. They see abortion as a serious issue that may disqualify a candidate from receiving support from Catholics, but list a variety of other issues of importance to guide the voter. I think it is incorrect to present any Catholic voting for a pro-choice candidate as not adhering to the teachings of the Church.
This reponse brings me back to a question I have posed to more than a few on this forum and have yet to get a response. What, exactly have the Dems done ,that in your prudential judgement, overrides their affinity for abortion?Since the choices typically boil down to a lesser of two evils decision,I am really wondering how,say a vote for Hillary or Bernie,or any past dem is a better option.

No it doesn’t. as I said voluminous documentation has been provided. Ones personal interpretation of a couple lines in the voters guide is not sufficient.

Good question-what policies does either of them support that mitigates their support for unrestricted taxpayer funded abortion on demand. We know the Church has specifically said(and has been documented in this thread) views on the economy, immigration, war, taxation, health care, the death penalty and education (among others) do not rise to the level of abortion

Maybe that explains why I have yet to receive a response, because there is no valid reason,if one rationally thinks it through.;)👍

The voter’s guide points out other issues such as avoiding war and promoting peace and torture that some recent Republican administrations have failed miserably on. Fortunately, Mr. Trump has stated that the Iraq War was a mistake, so I have no moral qualms about supporting a strong pro-life candidate such as him (even though some of his rhetoric is unnecessary, IMO).

You haven’t seen any practicing Catholics give what are valid reasons to them for voting for Democrats who are pro choice?

It seems that the Catholics who attend Mass regularly voted substantially for Romney 59% vs 39%

pewforum.org/2012/11/07/how-the-faithful-voted-2012-preliminary-exit-poll-analysis/

If we look at Catholic who attend Mass MORE than once a week, the difference is even larger, 63% for Romney vs 39% for Obama

It was only in those who go monthly or less that a majority vote for Obama

.So the less a Catholic practices their Faith, the more likely they were to vote for Obama, and vice versa.

As far as not practicing, the numbers are actually WORSE than what you stated, only about 36% of Catholic regularly attend Sunday Mass

However, only 36 percent of Millennials, approximately 2.7 million individuals, attend Mass at least monthly, compared to 64 percent of pre-Vatican II Catholics

catholicnewsagency.com/news/catholics_approve_of_pope_benedict_but_dont_attend_mass/
Ok I used to be good with math but I admit with age, I may not be as much. So correct me if I get this wrong. But if only 36% of Catholics attend Mass regularly, and 39% of those voted for Obama, does that mean 14% (39% of 36%) of practicing Catholics voted for pro choice Obama? Or does voting for him disqualify them from being practicing?

These issues don’t hold equal weight,in that it is the responsibility of our gov’t to protect t it’s people, even if it means going to war. However the real war being waged is on the most innocent among us and as Archbishop Chaput stated, social justice issues begins with respecting the dignity of nascent life in the womb.

Actually, that wasn’t the question I posed.I get plenty of the whole,"The Dems are for the little guy,the underserved and disenfranchised.Ok,then show me how the Dems have changed any of that?Obama has had eight years and if anything the black community is in worse shape,as are the poor as a whole.

I never said a word about practicing not did I single out Democrats. I am saying, correctly, if you vote for a pro-abortion candidate you are not adhering to the teachings of the Church(unless their opponent is more pro-abortion than they are) no matter how many Catholics do so. Voluminous documentation has been provided in this thread proving this point.

As the verse points out the “everybody does it” excuse was not good then and its not good now.
Right. So are you saying if a Democrat who attends Mass regularly and follows other precepts and yet votes for a pro choice candidate over one who is less pro choice, that they are not practicing? If they are not adhering to the teachings as you say, how can they be considered practicing? I’m still at a loss as to what exactly it is you are saying.

Yes, I am aware of Archbishop Chaput’s statements, but Archbishop Chaput is one bishop and he is not my bishop. I will study the Voter’s Guide and wait for my bishop to speak on these matters.

Maybe that’s why I heard today African Americans are voting for Hillary in even larger numbers than they did for Barack Obama.

Oh,so basically,if you don’t like what the Esteemed Archbishop Chaput has to say,you will wait and hope for a different response from another Archbishop, one that fits your mindset?
May I suggest the website Courgeous Priests? There are many informative articles to guide the faithful in all manners of our a faith. The priests, bishops archbishops that this website follows is listed on the site. You can go there, see what you bishop and others have to say.It is a wonderfully informative and supportive website.

What if the website doesn’t follow a bishop? Are all of the bishops listed to see what each one has to say?

Indeed. 👍
I will say it again.
No Catholic in good conscience can EVER vote for a pro-choice person.
There’s no gray area.
Textbooks on Moral Theology that mitigate the right to life are poor textbooks for a Catholic College. .
Any theology prof that argues for the culture of death because other issues cloud their judgment need to go back to a school which is faithful to the magisterium.
I think this is the first time I’ve agreed with you, but I agree with you. 👍

Jeanne, I love that website. 👍

I never said a word about practicing. Not once, I merely pointed out the obvious-if they vote for a pro-abortion candidate they are not following the teachings of the Church
