Gallup: One-Quarter of Liberals Say 'Extremely Proud' to be American | Breitbart

This article by Breitbart says a lot more about Breitbart than it does about liberals. It is a case study in deception. It shows that Breitbart has no interest in the truth, only an interest in making liberals look bad.

In my earlier posting I pointed out the difficulties in the way the results of this survey is presented. It strongly implies that liberals are not proud to be American. But the headline in the Gallup webpage that they mined these stats from says:
In U.S., Record-Low 47% Extremely Proud to Be Americans
which of course has an entirely different implication. I won’t speculate as to what that implication is for fear of being labelled a “Trump hater.” But it is certainly different from the deceptive story Breitbart wants to tell. This is why you should always ignore the Breitbart headlines and analysis and click through straight to the source.

Obviously people are more likely to say they are extremely proud of being an American in a time when America is being led in the direction of which they approve. As noted before, that would explain why, in the time of Trump, liberals are less likely that previously to say “extremely proud.” But the implication of the overall Gallup finding, considering liberals and conservatives together, says something about the overall feelings people have about the direction in which this country is being led. Keep in mind that the choices in the survey were: “Extremely proud, very proud, moderately proud, only a little proud, and not at all.” Not surprisingly, most Americans of both political persuasions were in the combined "“Extremely proud, very proud, moderately proud” category. Citing just one survey answer to the exclusion of other similar answers does not serve getting at the whole truth. It just serves Breitbart’s purpose in telling the story they want to tell.

I’m inclined to agree. Though the graphs they showed did indicate that the percentage of conservatives who identified as “extremely proud” are at the same levels now as they were when Obama was president. If anything, all that says is that conservatives are less likely to factor in who is in the White House when they respond to such a question.

Still, to dedicate the entire article to talking solely about the “extremely proud” response and completely ignoring the other answer choices is misleading to say the least.

It is a pattern. Listen to conservative talk radio. Much time is spent putting terrible words into the mouth of people they oppose to make them look bad. Those who live on that diet have a distorted world view.

Yes. Hence the gratitude I’ve expressed repeatedly. But I did nothing to earn nor deserve those privileges—so how can I be ‘proud’ of them?

As I said, it would be akin to being proud of my hair or eye color—which is absurd.

do you pay taxes? are you a criminal in jail or prison? do you do volunteer work?

more than likely in your daily life and in your family you are making some kind of contribution to make our country a good place to live and a country to be proud of.

Isn’t it true that 100% of Trump voters believe America isn’t all that great, and needs to be made “Great Again”?

That’s pretty shameful. Funny how the Breitbart readers don’t seem to notice the ironic inconsistency. After all, what are elections if not massive public opinion polls.

being proud of your country means you want it to be great and continue being great.
so if it starts getting off track, you want it to be great again.

That’s still an admission that the nation isn’t living up to its ideals.

I think it reflects the same sentiment as liberals who say they are not proud to be American. The difference is that Trump supporters are nostalgic for a past that will never return and was pretty horrible for women and minorities anyway, while Liberals are disappointed in the failure of a progressive spirit that promised to move the nation forward to a more fair and equitable future.

you can still be proud of your country when things are not going well.

Ah. Ok, if that’s the definition, then at the moment I suppose I could be proud I didn’t vote for the current mess we’re in. However, when I travel internationally, it’s more like embarrassment. Fortunately, most people with whom I’ve talked with in other countries understand that it was not the majority of Americans who voted for Trump.

Extremely proud to be American; extremely ashamed by many fellow Americans and our government.

And Breitbart presented it with very different emphasis than Gallup, changing the headline and being very selective in what they “reported”, which is what they are always criticizing the MSM for.
Yeah, it’s some strange form of self projection. The source behind Breitbart stories (they don’t always link to them) often tells a different story than what Breitbart does.

One effect this has is if they did present an undistorted story some may dismiss it simply because of the number of times they’ve already cried “wolf.”

you sound like an elitist and put yourself in a class a little above others.
How interesting that you would reach that conclusion from my lack of support for a president who demonstrably lies on a regular basis.

I’m not sure what in the tone of my post would give you the idea that I’m an elitist or put myself in a class above others.

what mess are we in?

you sound like an elitist and put yourself in a class a little above others.
you are probably like Obama, apologizing for America wherever you go.

now that is an embarrassment.
Whoa! I hope you didn’t get whiplash from your knee jerk reaction.
