You would find the positive impact of the repeal of DADT negligible, until you have to live it. And as for the “brotherhood” situation not existing in your experience, perhaps that’s because your experience is with the Air Force, and not an actual ground combat service.
Actually no, my “experience” as it were is with a troop support group so I was in close contact with close to 100 SMs over the years where I was very involved. This is everyone from an AF maintainer whose “tough” deployments included Guam 😃 to an Army Ranger NCO who was deployed in the wilds of Afghanistan to Marines who were on patrol near the Iraq border.

Again my point is that when you have groups of young people, raging hormones, missing home and family, and the element of danger; sexual activity is a fact of life. All divisions and across all levels. I heard most from female troops who as a tiny minority in the wilds of Iraq and Afghanistan were also the target of way too much male attention, not to mention that there were somewhat predatory Lesbians who also created sexual tension. If a lower level enlisted can hold off an NCO or officer with threats of “outing” him or her, it gives that lower level person a lot more leverage than with the repeal of DADT. The pressure among the lower level to ‘put out’ sexually was unfortunately high, not to mention the assaults the accompanied any trips outside of their quarters, particularly at night.

I cannot argue with your experience, they were yours. But I can report what was told to me repeatedly by numerous SMs who were deployed and in combat units as well as those back behind the wire.

Ed, with regard to the in-the-face attitudes of certain gay people, I don’t approve of some of the tactics used by gay activists, especially when they infringe on the rights of others, such as religious institutions and their affiliates. However, at the same time, I think the civil rights of gay people today would be virtually non-existent without the gay activists and leaders, just as the civil rights of Blacks and other minorities would be non-existent. Sometimes it takes in-the-face attitudes to effect change. You never gave it a second thought when you worked with gay people because many of them were quiet about their lack of equal rights and even may have learned to accept it as a way of life. It took outspoken leaders to make changes, many for the better despite the excesses, which are typical of groups that have formerly been discriminated against and oppressed.
There is no comparison with the civil rights of blacks.

jewishworldreview.com/jeff/jacoby_gay_marriage.php3

And may I add that since I lived in Detroit most of my life, today, most blacks prefer to live in mostly black neighborhoods.

This ban isn’t limited to one-on-one child-stranger contact, which in the best case harmless but highly unusual. This also applies to public demonstrations, like pride parades, where in less restrictive places than Russia are large public events that anyone can find out about. If a parent doesn’t want a child to go to or see a pride parade, then they don’t have to take them. If a parent sees a pride parade on the street the parent can go somewhere else.
I’m with the Russians on this one. Mothers with children should have the freedom of the streets to go anywhere they please, unmolested. There is no need for “pride (porn) parades.”

You fight injustice just as others have done, through the courts, through legislation, by being positive examples instead of warnings. Use of film such as “Philadelphia” have far more and far more POSITIVE impact than loud protests, displays of vulgarity, and outrageous costumes. I live in a very pro gay community and frankly have gone from being an advocate to utterly disgusted because it’s clear that there is a very loud cohort that is militant in providing the most disgusting public displays. If your movement wants to do itself a favor, the repulsive parodies with priestly or religious costumes, the men in rainbow tutus, the leather dudes prancing around in a thong and carrying a bullwhip, and the children dragged along as props are a complete turn off. And if it’s any consolation I feel EXACTLY the same way about the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church and their protests.

The sodomy laws, although rarely enforced were defanged by Lawrence v Texas. As to the Russian situation, their sodomy laws were overturned as well. The reality is that there were few actual prosecutions of homosexuals for sodomy (or as sometimes the case the term also applied to heterosexuals). Rules regarding contracts, employment and housing have all expanded to allow gays and Lesbians to live in peace.

Now with activism your agenda has forced the military to repeal DADT when in reality those in the military are not supposed to have ANY sexual component as a part of their military service. Making someone’s sexual preferences public is not necessarily a positive move. I predict we will have many more sexual assaults but they will be homosexual in nature. The power of an NCO or an officer over the enlisted is substantial and keeping a lid on one’s sexual interests is a way to prevent this from occurring. We also have a private club (Boy Scouts) pressured to allow openly gay members although again, boy scouts are not supposed to be engaged in ANY sexual activity or sexual talk or sex education. But no mind that DADT worked fine for all scouts, now we have concerns about gay sexual activity encroaching on a club for BOYS…not men BOYS, and single boys at that. Disgusting! Finally we come to marriage which is now a meaningless concept because it is no longer unique but can refer to any arrangement as decided by the individuals and their state. Oh and don’t let me get started about the private businesses sued because they did not want to participate in homosexual events.

You see it’s not the nice gay couple that wants to buy a home or the competent Lesbian that wants to keep her well paying job. It’s about changing society, tossing tradition, ethics and morals, not to mention biology out of the window. My sympathy for your cause decreases every day. You have simply gone too far.

Again, you make my point; PUBLIC demonstrations. If it were a matter of peaceable protests for specific and reasonable (I know, that’s subjective) it would be one thing but unfortunately the passion for the cause often spills over into disruptive and vulgar displays. As to the theory if you don’t want children to see, don’t take them in the area, why should the rights of one group be subverted to the agenda of another? In addition, as you said these protests are in large public areas where people are enjoying a day in the park or downtown. It seems that the rights of a small minority has precedence over the average citizen.

It’s interesting that the anti-gay sentiment is increasing in Russia. I have to wonder, as some posters have noted, if they see what has happened in America and Europe and hope to nip this in the bud. You know the saying, give an inch and they take a mile. I think that is a pretty accurate observation about the homosexual rights movement.

Lisa
It’s quite clear that the Russians are seeing what is happening in the UK.

So, you think that we should follow their example? You think that we should single out a group of people and throw them in jail for speaking their mind? Because currently you do have the freedom to go anywhere, unmolested. What you meant to say is you want the right to stifle the views of anyone who doesn’t subscribe to your religion. Are you really saying that gay people don’t deserve the same right of assembly that Catholics exercise every year during the march for life? One last thing, is it just gays, or are there any other groups of people who have less worth than everyone else, who’s beliefs and view points are to be treated as inferior to yours?

We don’t show pictures of people doing the marital act at pro-life marches.

If a straight man showed his penis to a kid, he’d go to jail so fast his head would spin, but homosexual men can show their penises to the whole world and it’s “free speech” and “pride.” 🤷

Quite right. And I think the Russians have access to youtube and can see what a “pride” parade looks like. The title of this thread is inaccurate if one takes the time to read what the Russian law actually says.

Gay men have a hard time even volunteering with organizations that work with children for fear of being falsely accused of attempting to get close to children because they are pedophiles… I don’t even want to hear about how horrible it must be for straight men.

And if you want to talk about disgusting imagery, you should look at some of the signs at the march for life… Which I was exposed to at a very young age. It was actually very disturbing. I’m not saying I’m pro-abortion, but I am saying that gays are not the only ones who use controversial imagery to further political goals.

Lastly, gay pride events, which I attend annually are not nearly as risqué as you seem to think. While there may be some inappropriate actions that occur, these are individuals doing them, not the entire group. I also know for a fact that they are advertised well in advance, and it is as simple as choosing not to take your children to them.

The fact that you advocate throwing me in jail for exercising the same rights I protect is frankly disgusting, and I’m extraordinarily offended that you would suggest that I should be treated as a criminal.

I have no problem with it… esp if they are talking to minors… which is what the Russian law is about. See what happens if ‘gays’ talk to my grandkids into ‘converting’ or handing out pamphlets etc.

I think if you actually read what is proposed, there was no talk of beatings or tossing into jail but certain monetary fines for propagandizing minors. As to rights of assembly, I don’t think we can speak for what is allowed in Russia. If they do not allow the signs or rainbow banners or other displays, it’s really not for us to object. This is what the people of that country want. Perhaps they realize the near impossibility of determining what signs or what language or what colors or dress or banners are acceptable. Easier to simply say no demonstrations and not create the kind of chaos that has ensued with our gay pride parades.

As to being a matter of ‘worth’ I think that’s disingenuous. You are not speaking of basic civil rights for human beings as human beings but the right to promote a particular sexual activity. If gays or blacks or Hispanics or women are protesting their lack of access to employment or housing or healthcare it’s one thing because these are common human needs and necessities for a basic and decent human life. It is not necessary for life to be able to engage in certain sex acts. I just don’t know why gays are so identified with their sex lives that they equate this minor detail of their humanity with life itself.

I am trying to be reasonable and sympathetic but to me it seems absurd to elevate the “right” to engage in particular sex acts with the right to life’s basic necessities. Maybe you can explain.

BTW if you check the Russian laws, they DO allow MSM’s to give blood.

If you do it in front of kids, I don’t care if you’re heterosexual or homosexual; I would say yes, you should go to jail.

There is no good reason to shove this garbage into children’s faces.

You believe then that gay people try to “convert” children into becoming gay, I presume? Where does that erroneous belief come from?

I’m not addressing the Russian laws… In fact, if we are going to focus on problematic anti gay laws, I’d have to say that Russia is not my top priority. I’m more concerned with countries like Uganda. What I’m addressing is the disturbing trend of people on this thread proposing similar laws in the US.

Now, as far as civil rights go, I think that freedom of speech and freedom of assembly are basic civil rights… In fact, if I’m not mistaken, they’re at the very top of the list in the constitution.

I’d also like to explain things from our point of view, since you asked. While I understand that many people only associate us with our sex lives, it’s way more than that. We identify ourselves as humans. We identify as doctors, lawyers, fathers, sons, daughters just like anyone else. When you say we identify by our sex lives, what you are seeing is us identifying with the way we ARE, not what we DO. I know several people who are gay and haven’t even had sex. They are still struggling to obtain the same rights as everyone else. In fact, my boyfriend is a virgin, and we are waiting until we get married. You just see what is in the news, and that is the flashy protesters, not the ones out engaging the public, collecting signatures and contacting their legislators. You don’t see the next door neighbors who go to church every week who haven’t stepped foot in to a gay bar or attended a pride parade in 20 years. We don’t identify by how we have sex, we identify by who we love, how we think, how we were created.

The fact that they do. I used to work in the music industry… with quite a few ‘gays’. And they talked quite abit about ‘converts’ ( getting hetrosexuals to ‘play’ for the other team… and that kids should be exposed to homosexuality etc. ) I transferred to another dept as soon as I could.

I am obviously not flashing my genitalia in front of anyone… and I would want anyone who was violating public nudity laws to be prosecuted. But surely you aren’t saying that exercising free speech and protesting is cause for prosecution. Even if there are children around.

I wonder how that task would be accomplished and why gays would even want to accomplish it. I can’t deny your personal experience, but rest assured that the vast majority of gay people do not try to convert children into becoming gay. Remember too that most gay children are the offspring of straight parents, who are the primary role models before teachers, peers, and media.

Where did he advocate anything? Seen anything about the Folsom Street Fair? Or how about this in the UK:

“Know Your Rights.Cruising Grounds are defined as open spaces where men look for sex with other men. These can be parks, lay-bys, beaches and other public …”

The Russians are taking the proper steps to avoid a future where public gay sex is a right.

I also experienced homosexuals and bisexuals wanting to “convert” me or “introduce” me to the homosexual lifestyle when I was a teenager.

I’m sure it’s very common.

As for the public sex thing, I’m opposed to all public sex, and I don’t think that gay people are the only ones who cruise for public sex… If you are also against it, then advocate laws against public sex, not against freedom of speech and assembly for one group of people.

Again, you are a voice for sanity amidst some groundless accusations. After going to a number of gay web sites, it’s quite clear that while real affection can occur, various sexual practices are part of gay culture even though the CDC has reported a rise in HIV/AIDS infections among MSM. Risking your life to engage in known risky sex practices? With all due respect, gays may diminish their own numbers with the full consent of both parties.

And the Russians are aware of the global push for gay so-called marriage.

Peace,
Ed
