Gender pronouns in the workplace

Language is “imaginary”: one doesn’t go and pluck language from a tree, friend.
 
Oh no. The cosy misappropriation of female pronouns is just the cutesy, quirky give-an-inch starting point, as I’m sure you’re well aware.
After that comes the demands for access to women’s shelters, rape counselling, women’s prisons. Control the language, remove women’s ability to name themselves and you take away their ability to hold the line on the places that protect them.

Like I say, you can be as free and easy with your rights as you wish. You don’t get to decide for the other women who value those rights.
 
Dude, no one is taking these things away. Some of the most active people I know are trans*. And transmen exist.
 
I was using “men” in the time-honored, non-sex-specific sense. And if people “honestly don’t care” about these matters, all the less reason for me to be absurdly solicitous of them at the expense of truthfulness.

Gender is more than that. If you lost yours would you stop being a man?
 
Our email signature informs colleagues that we are to be referred to as “Their Exalted Reverence”.

I have no idea what you mean by ‘active’. And yes, those things are being taken away, bit by bit, inch by inch, pronoun by pronoun. Transwomen pursuing rape counselling services in the courts, crippling them financially, because said rape counselling wouldn’t accept said transwoman as a counsellor because he wasn’t a woman. Transwomen erasing female sports is only just beginning but I’m sure you won’t have missed it. Trans identifying males housed in the female estate abusing female inmates in prison. Transwomen taking places set aside for women in politics.

And yes, transmen exist. They usually make the news for being pregnant, because they are, in fact women, and not because they are making inroads into the male dominated spheres. Wonder why that is?

You see how easy it is to change pronouns to what someone prefers? Calling someone what they ask to be called isn’t “absurdly solicitous”; it’s polite.
 
To say nothing of the sets of chromosomes we all have, which is a far better determinant of which sex you are than what sort of reproductive organs you have. If you have two X chromosomes, you are female. If you have one X and one Y, you are male. End of story. You may undergo all sorts of surgeries, hormone treatments, &c, but your chromosomes tell the real story, and they cannot be changed.
 
Cool. What about people with neither xx or xy? Sex is tricky and gender isn’t sex. Just call folks what they want, it hurts no one.
 
Control the language and you control how the debate is framed and consequently the outcome.
 
Yeah, I’m really not. This is about whether or not I should be coerced into buying into someone else’s delusion to be polite when there are very big things at stake. This is all connected.

I will happily use the name someone chooses. I will not deny reality to make them feel better.
 
Mockery is the best way to defeat stupid ideas like this. Arguing against them in most cases just lends them unmerited legitimacy.
