You mean like when he compromised on the Health Care bill? But then he was only compromising with other democrats - and the "compromise consisted of buying their votes (the Louisiana Purchase, Cornhusker Kickback, Florida Flimflam, etc…)
Ok this is going to come as a complete shocker I know to a lot you. Sit down for this one. But there are some of us who don’t necessarily think Obama is perfect but still support him over the alternative. I know total shock, huh.
See we just believe he is overall the better of the 2 major candidates regardless of who the GOP chooses from this field.
Take me for instance since I can only speak for myself. Healthcare has always been a very huge life issue to me .I personally support a single payer healthcare system among all the various imperfect models but would have at least preferred a public option. Single payer was not even on the table. Was I disappointed we didn’t even get a public option? You betcha. Still am. But one thing I know is I can not count on any Republicans to support such a plan to care for our sick who can not afford adequate care under our current system. Oh sure they go to the ER people will say. Who do think is paying for those costly ER trips? Someone if not those patients. In any case I believe “Obamacare” as it is known in these circles, aka the Affordable Care Act, was better than nothing and the status quo. Republicans have been in power and never emphasized or prioritized doing anything to fix our nation’s healthcare problems prior to Obama.
I am also a big advocate in these budgetary times of raising taxes on those who have most benefited from this economy and who can most afford to pay more. Asking them to sacrifice a bit more by going back to their tax rates of the 90s was not too much to ask instead of wanting the less fortunate to sacrifice the most by budgetary cuts in programs many people need and depend on in which to live and survive. Now before anyone decides to say raising these taxes will not solve the entire budgetary matter, no one including Obama has said it will. But it should be a part of the equation or solution. Revenues on the table as the saying goes. So was I disappointed Obama went along with an extension of these tax cuts for the rich a yr ago? You betcha. Still am. But at the same time I wanted to see unemployment benefits for instance extended and knew he had to compromise.
On the foreign policy front if a Republican POTUS had been Commander in Chief when Osama bin Laden was found, we would never have heard the end of praisies for that Commander in Chief.
I also supported the ending of DADT.
Do I support the Republican assault on unions and middle class workers as done in Wisconson and attempted in Ohio. No.
Is the economy still bad for too many. Yes. But would unemployment had been even worse if not for what jobs were saved by the stimulus. Of course.
Have I agreed with Obama’s leadership on everything? No. I could vote 3rd party. We have had for instance the Green party where I live which has usually been on the ballot. But I know by doing so I would be helping the candidate with whom I disagree with more between the major 2 who have a chance to be POTUS.
I could go on. But I don’t expect the vast majority here on this forum to agree. It is afterall a very politically conservative forum with most in opposition of Barack Obama. Very well done. Politics 101 according to Cmatt. I think you have done a good job of explaining how left/liberal Democrats feel. Judging from your posts this is no surprise. I think this election is indeed about two conflicting views of the future of America. Will we continue to trash the constitution, allow the govt. to further encroach into every aspect of our lives, support the abortion of our unborn, the undermining of traditional marriage (which is the source of health and strength of our society), trickle-down immorality? The government which can give you anything - including that all important “healthcare for all” can take away anything- including your rights if you still believe in them. The other view is simple: we should promote a culture of life, minimal government, and living within our means. We need to allow business to flourish, not declare war on business - that is, if you want more jobs. The principle of subsidiarity - our problems should be handled at the lowest level of government. Instead, we have liberals who think our problems should be dealt with by a federal bureaucracy funded by the taxpayers. The choice is simple, we are going to get back to what America is truly about- the constitution, limited govt. and virtues, or we are going to make the brave new world Cmatt is proposing and become ever more dependant on the government/daddy to provide for us and tell us what to do. Trust me, eventually you won’t like what the bureaucrats are telling you what to do, but then it will be too late. The brave new world is not America, Cmatt, but something far different. Actually, no. I have been reexamining Mr. Gingrich’s positions on a variety of issues, even overlooking past mistakes he made when he was Speaker. I like him more than I do a few others running for the nomination, but then he comes out and plays ideological games hoping to capture that far right wing of the party. What CMatt and others don’t realize is that our goverment debt is only 10 years away from reaching the level of Greece: 126% of our GDP.
It goes back to Wilson and the establishment of the Federal Reserve. Once the Congress realized that whenever it needed money for whatever little pet project or entitlement they wanted, all they had to do was authorize the creation of new money from thin air, the writing was on the wall.
**Back to John Bolton. I saw him last night **- I believe it was on Greta's Fox program. Bolton is wild-eyed, a dogmatic man dangerous to the future of the USA and the world. I simply couldn't imagine a reasonable president selecting him as Secretary of State. This is one of several reasons why Gingrich scares me. Would our nation go crazy with a Gingrich-Bolton combination? I'm afraid so.
**Bolton is a neocon.** As someone has suggested the neocons initially were primarily Jews who had been on the far left - some of them Trotskyites or other socialist-types. They seem to have retained some of that Trotskyite mentality, which pushed for continual conflict (and hatred) until the world was remade in their image.
**I don't want to boast**, but I would make a better Secretary of State than Bolton. So would most of you. His thinking is so radical, so warped, that he - in my view - peddles a viewpoint that is dangerous to our long-term existence as a nation.
