The government didn’t force Catholic Charities to close. Gringrich would do well to remember that Catholic Charities closed its adoption services because the people who supported their decision verbally failed to do so financially. The Catholic Church and its affiliated charities aren’t victims of secular “bigots”; they’re casualties of a lack of interest or inability on the part of Catholics to financially support their charities and social institutions. Perhaps Gingrich should be asking why Catholic Charities was so dependent on public funding instead of blaming the secular establishment which kept it running with tax dollars. You don’t hear the opposite question asked. Should the Catholic Church be forced to close its adoption services in Massachusetts because it won’t accept gay couples, which is exactly what the state has done? Should the Catholic Church be driven out of providing charitable services in the District of Columbia because it won’t give in to secular bigotry?
