I’ll believe Newt is a serious contender when the democrat smear machine turns their crosshairs on him. I’m sure they are salivating at the chance to destroy him and his family once and for all. After all, the only politicians who are squeaky clean are democrats, don’t you know?

BTW, I wouldn’t mind seeing a Newt/Cain or Cain/Newt ticket.

The last time I looked Reconciliation confers grace, it doesn’t make up for a lack of integrity nor prevent relapses.

As a Catholic I am glad Newt has got right with God and I wish him well. As a voter I have every right to judge him by his past & my rule of thumb is “people don’t change”.

What about the good thief on the cross? He changed. If God can forgive, who are we to hold back. I think, thru God’s grace, that Newt has learned his lesson and has changed. We all do as we get older. With Newt, as with Cain, let he who is without sin cast the first stone. As we now know, much of what has been said about Newt and his first wife was not true.

It will be interesting to see how long Newt Gingrich is able to surge. As I read yesterday there is a possibility this could last for awhile. I’d have to guess a great deal depends on the eventual onslaught from the MSM highlighting his past baggage. Will he wilt under the pressure? I guess time will tell. He does have experience in dealing with the press. And additionally, as can be seen with Herman Cain, it seems many conservatives have lost belief in the MSM.

Cain’s graph doesn’t really turn down … flattens out, actually, instead of starting to curve down.

Wayyyy too early to predict …Heck, Palin might even change her mind.

What kind of sense does it make for a man to abandon his wife and children when it is suspected that she has cancer? Why is that the sensible thing to do as far as the children are concerned? Romney on the other hand has stayed with his wife and children for 36 or so years. That seems like a man who is a lot more sensible to me. And of course, we should not forget that Gingrich has been cited for ethics violations.

Why is it fair to the children for a father to abandon their mother and to have a mistress? How does the absolution of Gingrich help the children to get over their pain and disappointment of seeing their father with a mistress?

In the overall political context of the past few decades, that’s a pretty humorous statement.

Quite frankly, I don’t see the humor in a case where a father abandons his children. I hope that most people who consider themselves to be Christian would see this as a tragedy for the children and the family.

Santorum is the best candidate, yet even Catholics won’t seem to choose him. It is a genuine mystery to me.

If you have read anything about Gingrich’s daughters, you would know they got over it quite nicely. I don’t approve of divorce, but it happens all the time. Now if you dislike Newt because he is a conservative, why don’t you just say so.

No, but repeating a misrepresentation of the facts could be. If people would read the daughter’s account of the whole situation, than you can see where this statement by a poster here does not agree with the facts:

2 Mrs Gingrich packed up the kids and drove back to Carrollton
3 Later in the summer of 1980 Mrs. Gingrich went to the hospital at Emory and had a benign tumor removed.

From the daughters account the hospital visit came after the divorce proceeding had already begun. Her mother did not have cancer. He did not “serve” divorce papers on his cancer ridden wife in the hospital as some smear campaigns have maintained. Newt is not my first choice for the Presidency, but smear campaigns involving possible Calumny and at least detraction have no place on Catholic forums.

It is not my decision what is or isn’t calumny, not even my area of expertise, but a cursory look at the wiki article on the subject gives me a pretty good idea of what was being referred to.

Yeah, that’s what happens when you question the sincerity of someone’s religious conversion. People have said on this thread, that Newt converted in order to win Catholics for his campaign.

Well, this is what you get. How would you like someone to doubt your conversion to the Catholic faith? Not a convert? How would you like someone to doubt the sincerity of your faith?

That’s also what you get for spreading a rumor about someone’s past, that has been refuted by his own family. Another word for a rumor is gossip. And, I seem to remember the Catholic Church having an opinion about gossip.
