On this we agree. Both parties play racial politics, and doing so is IMO immoral, incendiary and potentially dangerous for the nation. Both parties should stop.

What we may disagree on is whether these kind of statements by Gingrich and other candidates are meant to be “dog whistle” statements to draw on and exacerbate racial divisions or whether they are more innocent. Either way, I would suggest that at a minimum they show a certain insenstivity to racial issues that will not help the eventual nominee in November.

Well, let’s see…

The Democratic party was responsible for the Voting Rights Act which allowed blacks to vote without having to jump through whatever hoops the white power structure put in place to prevent us from exercising our rights as citizens.

The Democratic party was responsible for the passage of the Civil Rights Act which outlawed Jim Crow and helped move us into a more equal place in society.

I agree with doing what is best for the country. During the Clinton administration we saw unprecedented economic growth. As they say, “a rising tide lifts all boats!” So blacks, whites, and others all benefitted from a healthy economy.

It is not a surprise that black people are still at the bottom on most measures. However, when you consider that we were initially brought here in chains, endured 400 years of slavery, endured another 100 years of Jim Crow which was only one step above slavery, I would say that in the past 50 or so years we’ve made a great deal of progress.

Myth. The Voting rights act received a higher percentage Republican votes in Congress than Democrat votes

. Clinton left us an economy in decline with the housing bubble that was about to blow up in our faces. . We are still paying the price for that today

400,000 black children a have resulted in 75% illegtimacy rate among blacks as well as institutionalized poverty that sees blacks make up over a third of those in poverty in this country. . If you consider this progress. I would hate to see your definition of failure. go to sleep him

Can you tell my why my Viet Namese manicurist, who barely speaks English, drives an Acura SUV, owns a home in the suburbs, and a vacation home in Viet Nam? She’s put her three children through college in the US. She’s been in the country for 20 years.

The Civil RIghts Act was pushed by President Eisenhower in the 50s. His biggest and most vocal opponent? A Senator from Texas named Lyndon Johnson. The very man who would take credit for signing it as President some 10-12 years later.

And so I’m prepared, if the NAACP invites me, I’ll go to their convention and talk about why the African-American community should demand paychecks and not be satisfied with food stamps. And I’ll go to them and explain a brand new Social Security opportunity for young people, which would be particularly good for African-American males because they are the group that gets the smallest return on social security because they have the shortest life span.

Wow. Just wow. I am stunned at how the media spun this. When Gingrich was talking about paychecks and food stamps, he wasn’t talking about actual paychecks and food stamps. He was talking about which candidate to support, and that because Obama is a food stamp president, they should demand someone else (like Gingrich, the paycheck candidate). :eek: is all I can say.
 
Agree, context is king. Always helps to find the full statement and judge that and not the spin. Whether the spin is flying right or left.

This is someone that I don’t even support and yet this really disgusts me. It’s easy to crush Newt on the issues; we don’t need to misconstrue what he’s said.

Exactly. He worked more crowds than the other nominees, and that is what grew his numbers. He did it “old school.”

Perry fizzled because of his terrible debate performances and somewhat bizarre performances on the stump. We all know why Cain fizzled. Neither are the media’s fault- they merely filmed the two self-destructing. Bachmann imo was never a serious candidate anyway, and while she made some good points in the debates, she failed to connect. You can always count on the media to play up any gaffe or misstep. Every candidate will make one. But when they make multiple mistakes their days are numbered. Santorum worked hard in Iowa to finish almost first. I don’t think he’ll get the nomination but you never know. I would vote for him if I thought he would be the strongest candidate for the general election.

What conspiracy mongering? It was just pictures of the crowds. As I said, there were no crowds. The Santorum surge is nothing more than media spin.
