Some heard low level booing when Newt mentioned Mitt’s name and was chided by Huckabee. Apparently, the interview rules precluded direct reference to other candidates.

What nobody saw fit to mention (as usual) is that Newt’s answers were more specific and detailed than any of the other candidates I watched (Huntsman, Santorum). This was true even when he was responding to a young lady who prefaced her question by stating she voted for Obama the last time around. [Huckabee got a good laugh when he asked her how that Obama thing was working out for her.]

In all charity, I can’t see Mr. Gingrich being able to run for POTUS with his personal history.

Likewise.
But I hope other candidates don’t go digging into it more than they have. One problem with primaries is that they produce fodder for the Dems in the general election. The rate we’re going Pres Obama won’t need any ads except, “Here’s what the Republicans themselves say about -----”

Voters didn’t know about Kennedy’s numerous affairs until after his assassination, and today he is a revered hero.

I don't recall that LBJ had much of an extra-marital record. Did I forget - or never know?

Most people didn't believe the attacks on Clinton until Monica. They were seen as politically-inspired and likely fictional.

Gingrich was divorced twice, plus extra-marital affairs. I believe his present wife was an 'affairee' before they married. Maybe that, too, is fiction.

In all honesty, I have to wonder about the annulment process in a case like this. Is it another case of a hierarchy that is so eager to net someone like Gingrich that they rush it through? I hope not.

Didn’t hurt Bill Clinton, or LBJ or JFK.
Democrats are not expected to toe any particular moral line. As long as they keep funding entitlement programs, they will continue getting put into office.

When you promise to rob Peter to support Paul, you can always count on Paul’s vote.

I can assure you that an annulment process is not rushed through. Sometimes it takes a very long time and investigation. Often annulments are not granted. Our illustrious press knew all about JFK, and LBJ, and others, but failed to tell the rest of us. But there were rumors throughout their tenures in office. Perhaps you were too young to be aware. As far as Clinton was concerned, it was well known, again by the press, that he was a philanderer long before he hit DC. Hillary used to have the security detail follow him in Little Rock. Don’t know if Gingrich had more affairs other than with his wives. Where did you learn this?

I dont think Gingrich would have had to get an annulment. He converted. He wasnt married in the Catholic church to his previous wives.

I’m not an expert in canon law, but I’m pretty sure converts have to have previous marriages annulled.

JFK’s amorous adventures got him into trouble from his younger years and continuously thereafter. Maybe the news media declined to go into detail. The reason for JFK’s “transfer” to the South Pacific to drive a PT boat was that one of his “girlfriends” was “Inga”, the mistress of a German spy in Washington. JFK spoke fondly and publicly of Inga. JFK’s father engineered the transfer to get him out of Washington; otherwise JFK might have faced charges of treason for consorting with a known enemy agent.

LBJ was semi-faithful to his mistress, Mrs. Helen Gahagan Douglas. She was a member of the House of Representatives. Robert A. Caro wrote extensively about LBJ’s long-running affair in “The Years of Lyndon Johnson: Master of the Senate” pages 141 - 145. The leftist lobby hates Richard Nixon for two reasons: he prosecuted Alger Hiss and he defeated Mrs. Douglas in an election; one of the issues was that she was a Communist. LBJ’s world was collapsing … all of the seamy stuff was starting to come to the surface. Explains why LBJ is on record in preventing U.S. victory in Vietnam; just one example: he is publicly quoted as not wanting our fliers to shoot down any [more] MiG’s. And most likely LBJ would have been prosecuted by Robert Kennedy, the attorney general, or given the “Spiro Agnew treatment”. There is even a book about it that just came out. Audio tapes of Jackie Kennedy complaining about these issues and more have just been released.

The fact that Nixon was fairly strait-laced might have actually been held against him.

But people in those times weren’t stupid. The business with Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe and Judith Exner … In fact, even the Soviets were able to exploit a lot of JFK’s human frailty and naivete … another new book, “Berlin 1961: Kennedy, Khrushchev And the Most Dangerous Place on Earth” by Frederick Kempe goes into a lot of detail.

And even one fellow Catholic who does not hold a high opinion of the way Gingrich entered the church, “through the Catholic he was having an affair with,” said this about seeing the now-presidential candidate at Mass frequently at the Basilica: “He goes faithfully and takes it seriously; some [prominent] people put on a show” and seem engrossed in noticing who’s noticing them. Gingrich “doesn’t.’

*At a minimum, the thrice-married Gingrich’s metamorphosis from someone who rarely attended religious services to a zealous promoter of God’s central role in the public square does suggest he’s personally capable of the kind of radical transformation he’s urging on the country as a whole. *

From which she was later exonerated IIRC.
