Although it is true that the meat and drink offerings of the old law were superseded by Christ’s death on the cross, you seem to have totally misunderstood Colossians 2:16. It does not say, Let no man therefore judge you in meat and drink in respect of an holyday, new moons and the sabbaths; it says, Let no man therefore judge you in meat OR in drink OR in respect of an holyday, OR of the new moon, OR of the sabbath days. In other words, Let no man judge you in meat; let no man judge you in drink; let no man judge you in respect of an holyday; let no man judge you in respect of the new moon; and let no man judge you in respect of the sabbath days.

This means that all the restrictions on consuming certain types of meat and drink and the keeping of the holydays, new moons, and sabbaths of the old law are now irrelevant, superseded by the new law of Christ.

This is just as Hosea prophesied: And I will put an end to all her mirth, her feasts, her new moons, her sabbaths, and all her appointed feasts. (Hosea 2:11)

As far as Scriptural support for Christians assembling together on Sunday, the first day of the week, you need only read Acts 20:7:
On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and he prolonged his speech until midnight.

ACTS 20 [7] And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.[8] And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together.

Theres no doubt Todd that the above scripture is used by the many to convince people that sunday was being kept as a day of rest instead of the sabbath during the time of Paul. They will point out that on the first day of the week they came together to “break bread” and thus the believers of Pauls time were following sunday as the “new testament” day of rest.

ACTS 2 [42] And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.[43] And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.[44] And all that believed were together, and had all things common;[45] And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.[46] And they, CONTINUING DAILY with one accord in the temple, AND BREAKING BREAD from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

But as you can see they “broke bread” daily. Not just on the first day of the week. THEY WERE SIMPLY EATING. The fact is, you will find no where in the new testament anyone keeping sunday as a day of rest.

LUKE 4 [14] And JESUS returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.[15] And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.[16] And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, AS HIS CUSTOM WAS, he WENT INTO THE SYNAGOGUE ON THE SABBATH DAY, and stood up for to read.

JESUS kept the sabbath

ACTS 17 [2] AND PAUL, AS HIS MANNER WAS, went in unto them, and three SABBATH DAYS reasoned with them out of the scriptures,[3] Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

PAUL kept the sabbath

ACTS 13 [42] And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, THE GENTILES besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.[43] Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.[44] And THE NEXT SABBATH DAY CAME ALMOST THE WHOLE CITY TOGETHER TO HEAR THE WORD OF GOD.

GENTILES come together on the sabbath to hear the WORD.

Can anyone show me in scripture where the Word of God actually changes or does away with the sabbath day of rest? Old? New?
 
AD 90: “One the Lord’s own day gather together and break bread and give thanks.” Didache, 14:1

AD 107: *“Let every friend of Christ keep the Lord’s Day as a festival, the resurrection-day, the queen and chief of all the days.” *St. Ignatius, Epistle to the Magnesians, Chapter IX

AD 160: *“There is no other thing for which you blame us, my friends [speaking to the Jews], is there than this? That we do not live according to the Law, nor… do we observe the Sabbath as you do.”

AD 197: “For we solemnize the day after Saturday in contradistinction to those who call this day their Sabbath.” Tertullian, Apology, Chapter 16

The truth is, there is not a single historical text that speaks of Christians observing the Sabbath as their primary day of worship.

So, despite sabbatarian claims to the contrary, it is an unavoidable historical fact that Sunday was established as the highest and holiest of days long before the councils and proclamations of the fourth century. It was observed by the very first Christians and by all succeeding generations. In the end, the only way sabbatarians can really refute the historical evidence that Sunday is the God-ordained day of Christian worship is to accuse the early Christians - including the very first Christians - of apostasy.

Hebrews 3:11-15:

As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’"

These verses tell us that our rest is fulfilled in Christ. These verses are amplified by Col 2:16 (and several other simliar verses regarding the fullfillment of the law in Christ) which make it clear we are not longer required to celebrate the saturday Sabbath as a day of rest (though we are free to do so)

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a sabbath (Col 2:16)

I see Chrisb did a nice job of showing the historical record of the early christians meeting and celebrating on Sunday the “Lord’s Day”

Like the early Christians, sabbatarians must come to recognize that the Incarnation, life, death, and Resurrection of Christ opened a new way to God for us. They need to accept that the ways of God’s Old Coventant - including the Sabbath worship - have been surpassed in the new Kingdom of Grace.

Of course, even one who accepts the fact that the Church has always worshiped on Sunday may still ask, “Why did the Church make that change? How could it set aside the Fourth Commandment like that?” To answer those questions, one must look to the teachings of the ancient Church - the Church that opened its doors on the Day of Pentecost and has preserved the teachings of the Apostles unaltered ever since.

In examining those teachings, the sabbatarian will discover something he may find quite surprising: According to the ancient Church, Saturday is the Sabbath! The Sabbath was never “changed” from Saturday to Sunday, as some Christians mistakenly claim. For two thousand years, the Church has recognized Saturday as a holy day that commemorate God’s resting after the creation of the world. The Church also reveres Saturday as the day on which Christ descended into hell, shattering its gates and freeing mankind forever from the bonds of death.

Now, as the Council of Laodicea’s pronouncement indicates, the Church has never observed the Sabbath in a Jewish manner - with things like mandatory resting from work and travel restrictions. But the Sabbath is a day on which special services and liturgical practices has historically been observed.

In fact, I’ve heard sabbatarians quote historical claims that Christians of later centuries continued to keep the Sabbath. But they misunderstand these texts, because they do not recognize that the honor the ancient Church gives to the Sabbath has always been secondary to it sreverence for Sunday. For while the Church believes that the Sabbath is holy, and the creation it commemorates is awesome, it understands that both have been infinitely superseded in the coming of the Son of God to earth.

The New Testament tells us that this creation in which we live, the one that God spent six days creating, will not last. St. John declares, “Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away” (Revelation 21:1).

Many aspects of the old creation have already disappeared. For instance, St. Paul assures us that “if anyone is in Christ,* he is* a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). For those who believe in Jesus Christ, death - an inescapable feature of the old creation - has been “abolished” (2 Timothy 1:10).

So the new creation has already burst forth into existence. When did this begin to unfold? On the day of Christ’s glorious Resurrection! One that day, God established the foundations of this new world that includes eternal life for mankind. Rising in the flesh, Christ our God made possible our eternal union with Him. By the power of His Resurrection, man is blessed by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and may live in oneness with the Father under the earnest of new heavens and a new earth.

Now, the old creation was commemorated on Saturday, the day of its ending. But the new creation will never pass away. Thus, it can only be commemorated on the day on which it begins. As St. Athanasius (fourth century) writes,

MATT.12 [39] But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:[40] For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; SO SHALL THE SON OF MAN BE THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE HEART OF THE EARTH.

The above scripture says as Jonas was 3 days and 3 nights in the whales belly, and so shall Jesus be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth. Does good Friday afternoon till (easter) Sunday morning equal 3 days and 3 nights? No it does not. The reason i ask is because if you go soley by the scriptures Jesus would have risen on a late sabbath day as the sun was setting. Exactly 3 days and 3 nights after He was placed in the heart of the earth. In each case as the people came to the tomb on sunday morn they found that Jesus had already risen.

Hi iWrecken Snow. The problem is the attempt to interpret these verses using today’s lense, rather than the lense of the culture of the time when the scriptures were written. In Judaism, any part of a day constitutes a day and a night. Thus, “3 days and 3 nights” and “3 days” are synonomous and this is why there is no conflict in scripture in other verses where there is reference only to the 3 days.

As to the Sunday resurrection (Friday crucifiction) this too was taught from the earliest years of Christianity. Alternative interpretations of scripture today without this historical context lead to absurd results (e.g., the claim of some now that Christ was crucified on Wednesday, etc). Similarly, I’ll point out, that new interpretations of Paul’s letters without historical context have also led to absurd results (double predestination, eternal security), all as forewarned by Peter in his epistle when he said Paul’s writings are hard to understand and will be interpreted to destruction.

This is why the Catholic Church teaches that the Deposit of Faith is comprised of scripture and tradition - so that we don’t lose, through the passage of time and changes in culture, the original meaning and intent of the apostles when writting these verses for our edification.

There is no doubt that the earliest Christians understood the Lord to have arisen on Sunday - which is consistent with scripture.

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. As much as I would like to avoid using the Sacred Text in such a crude fashion, these forensic textural arguments need to be addressed.

We, Orthodox, adhere to the Faith of the Fathers. To really enter the Kingdom of God, we must embrace the truth about Him. That truth, St. Paul tells us, is found in the practices and beliefs of His Church., “the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). My study of church history taught me that there is only one place in which the Christian Faith, as St. Paul and the first believers knew it, is preserved to this day. That bastion of truth is the Holy Orthodox Faith.

So I would invite my sabbatarian friends and those entertaining sabbatarian arguments to “cross the Jordan.” Do not stand on the far shore, content with following old ways of worship that were intended to bring us only to the borders of the Kingdom of God. Come follow the path of Christ and His Holy Church into the eighth and eternal day, into the true riches of His everlasting Kingdom.

So i figured why ask others their thoughts when anyone could be part of the many. I figured the safe course of action was just to read the written Word and believe what it said. If anyone can be a part of the many, then how do you know that you yourself are not?

In other words, there are others who think as you do and read Scripture on their own, “let Scripture interpret Scripture”, and come to different conclusions. What criteria do you use to determine that the understanding you get from reading Scripture on your own is correct, while theirs is incorrect?
 
Alindawyl, that is a very good point.🙂 I was wondering the same thing, that and I have another question how do you not know what faith or religion you are now? Do you know what you believe ( wrecknsow)? When weread the Bible I believe we need to read it as a whole and not pick apart each verse.You know even if Jesus had written the Bible himself and gave us every single detail and told us how it was to exact date and times, I think sadly enough some people would still question what he actually ment. What happened to Faith like a child simple faith?

You must be psycic. How did you know it was to snow here tonight? First of all it was Jesus himself who said He would be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth and Jesus knew how many hours were in a day

JOHN 11 [9] Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.[10] But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

Theres another huge problem with your theory. There is no portion of the 3rd day

JOHN 20 [1] The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when IT WAS YET DARK, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

Youve known all along that you cannot find a portion of a third night. In believing the above scripture you must now believe you cannot find a portion of a third day. When Mary Magdalene came to the place Jesus was buried it was still dark and He had already risen.

These women bought sweet spices AFTER the sabbath was past.

LUKE 23 [56] And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; AND RESTED THE SABBATH DAY according to the commandment.

These same women prepared spices and then rested the sabbath day, according to the commandment (Gods 4th commandment) How could these women prepare spices and rest the sabbath if they didnt buy spices till after the sabbath had past? There had to be two sabbath days that week.

JOHN 19 [14] And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King![15] But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him.

JOHN 19[31] The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (FOR THAT SABBATH DAY WAS AN HIGH DAY,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

These 2 scriptures from John are proof that the first of these sabbaths was the high sabbath. There is a sabbath on the 1st day of the feast of unleavened bread.

LEVITICUS 23 [5] In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the Lord’s passover. [6] And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the Lord: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. [7] In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.

After the passover, in the 1st day of unleavened bread, there is a high sabbath day. No one saw the Lord rise. When they discovered He had risen, it was Sunday (the 1st day of the week) but no one was present when He rose from the dead. If you believe the sign of Jonas and the scripture from Matt.12 you must believe He rose on a late sabbath afternoon 3 days and 3 nights after Jesus was placed in the heart of the earth. He was placed in tomb before sundown as at sundown began the sabbath as stated in John 19[31].

MARK 8 [31] And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and AFTER THREE DAYS rise again.
 
MARK 16 [1] And when the sabbath was past, MARY MAGDALENE, AND MARY THE MOTHER OF JAMES, AND SALOME, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

MARK 15 [40] There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was MARY MAGDALENE, AND MARY THE MOTHER OF JAMES THE LESS AND OF JOSES, AND SALOME;[41] (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.[42] And now WHEN THE EVEN WAS COME, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,[43] Joseph of Arimathaea, and honourable counseller, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.[44] And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.[45] And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.[46] And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.[47] AND MARY MAGDALENE AND MARY THE MOTHER OF JOSES BEHELD WHERE HE WAS LAID.

These 2 scriptures are proof that the women who bought the spices didnt run out and buy the spices after Christ was crucified. They were there when Christ was crucified and there when laid in his tomb. At sundown the sabbath began and the girls were there. After sundown (during the sabbath) they could not buy or sell so they had to wait till the sabbath had passed. Just as scripture verifies in Mark 16.

MATT.27 [54] Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.[55] And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:[56] AMONG WHICH WAS MARY MAGDALENE, AND MARY THE MOTHER OF JAMES AND JOSES, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.[57] When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:[58] He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.[59] And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,[60] And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.[61] And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.[62] Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,[63] Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, AFTER THREE DAYS I WILL RISE AGAIN.

Yup, after 3 days. Just as Jesus said it would be. Just as the “sign of Jonah” points out.

Keep in mind that jewish days begin at sundown. They still do to this day. You can see that the sabbath thats spoken of in John was a high sabbath day and not the weelky sabbath.

NUMBER ONE – Wednesday evening before sundown Jesus was placed in the tomb. Jesus was placed in the tomb just before the 1st day of the feast of unleavened bread which is a high sabbath day as explained in John 19 verse 31. The 1st day and night Jesus was in the tomb was the (high sabbath day).

NUMBER TWO – Thursday evening till friday evening. Night and day no.2. This day, AFTER the sabbath had passed (Mark 16 verse 1) the girls went shopping, returned home and prepared the spices.

MARK 16 [1] And WHEN THE SABBATH WAS PAST, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

LUKE 23 [56] And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; AND RESTED THE SABBATH DAY according to the commandment.

NUMBER THREE- Day and night no.3 was, as the Word states in Luke 23, the weekly sabbath day according to the 4th commandment. It was after the WEEKLY sabbath day that they went to the tomb (on the 1st day of the week) and found that Jesus HAD risen.
