Back when I was a kid, I was a girl. Our eldest child is a girl. I had lots of films from my childhood that I loved and wanted to share with her. Therefore, my video collection is high on the estrogen. My son, however, is a boy, and while he loves Rodgers and Hammerstein Cinderella, Little Orphan Annie, Belle, Ariel, and Moana as much as the next kid, I’m thinking he should have some good quality films with a virtuous male protagonist. My older brothers watched nothing but garbage growing up. Most of “their” movies features kids who needed their butts whipped. I do recall my younger brother enjoying Simba (which we already have), Toy Story, and Angels in the Outfield. Does anyone have any really great movies for little boys? Extra points if they have a moral or emphasize a virtue of some kind. Double points if they have some catchy songs in them that might replace “Tomorrow” in my son’s repertoire, because that is only going to be adorable for so much longer.

One comes to mind;

“Captain’s Corrageous,” with Spencer Tracy. My grandson loved it.

Jim

Boy’s Town; also with Spencer Tracy. On Borrowed Time–with Lionel Barrymore Bobs Watson

“The Prince of Egypt” is pretty great, and the music is amazing!

  • Peter Pan
  • Aladdin
  • Bugs life
  • The Incredibles
  • Monsters inc
  • Lady and the Tramp
  • Winnie the Pooh
  • The Jungle Book
  • The Emperor’s New Grove
  • Tarzan
  • Hercules
Those are the movies I can think of, that are of similar spirit to the ones you mentioned above.

My brother and I loved the Jungle Book growing up, and my husband knows the entire Aladdin movie back to front.

We’ve got Boy’s Town, and while it’s an excellent movie, I think it’s a little bit much for my 2yo. I was thinking something more child-friendly.

I was thinking more along the lines of films, not cartoons. We’ve got lots of cartoon favorites already. I was hoping for something a little more substantial that the whole family would like. So something between Boys Town and Veggietales.

I do love that film. My kids can’t watch it yet. The opening scene alone traumatizes my daughter. It’ll be great when she’s older.

I forgot about Peter Pan. I have the Cathy Rigby video at school. I’ll have to bring it home! I used to have the Mary Martin version, but the VHS tape died. Winnie the Pooh and The Jungle Book we don’t have, but I bet he would like them!

When my son was five or six, I got a DVD of the movie The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn. He fell in love with it, thought it was hilarious, and invited his “godbrother” (son of his godparents) over to watch it with him. They acted out some of the adventures in the backyard.

When I was a kid in the 1960’s, my parents thought Tarzan films were appropriate for a boy.

Boys also like the 3 Stooges,

Bridge on the River Kwai
Empire of The Sun
Back to the Future
big
ET
Spirit
Hoosiers
The Incredibles
Holes
The Karate Kid (old and new versions)
The Sandlot
The Mighty Ducks
The Princess Bride
Rudy
Swiss Family Robinson
Stand By Me
To Kill a Mockingbird
War Games

This was from a top 100 list, but I only chose the ones my boys watched over and over (and of course don’t forget Star Wars 😉

I know parents whose child is engaged in sports, and they instilled in him a great interest to watch various competitions and imitate his sports heroes.
