For each parent, what movies are acceptable when depends on your goal in parenting, as well as the temperament of the child. For me, I am a believer in masculine role models. The world needs hard men of the highest moral character. On the other hand, boys should not be pushed into a personality that is not theirs. I have to think that part of our gender confusion comes from rejecting the gentlest spirits in boys as feminine, failing to realize that boys can be tender and still be fully masculine. So what is appropriate at what age depends on the parent and the child.

I think this is spot on.

My son always played with dolls and stuffed animals when he was little. He loved to play “papa” and take care of his babies. He also loved to build things so he could “blow them up” (poor Thomas the Train never reached his destinations). He hated anything violent, but he loved heroes saving the day and stories where good triumphed over evil… and musicals!

He’s now a teenager and has maintained his sweet and tender heart, but is also masculine and chivalrous.

Knowing each child as the individual God created them to be – that’s the best you can do as a parent. ❤️

Good ones gracepoole. Here are some more:

Real Steel
Home Alone I & II
Hook
White Fang
The Black Swan (1942)
The Black Shield of Falworth
The 13th Warrior (gory)
Someone already mentioned Robin Hood

When DS was little, he loved (all of these would be the original versions, animated)

Jungle Book
Fox and the Hound
Fantasia
Sword and the Stone
Robin Hood
Aristocats
Lady and the Tramp
Fern Gully
Land Before Time
101 Dalmations

By age 4 it was monster movies. Every one of the classic Godzilla movies we watched a bajillion times!

I love Miyazaki movies…I would start with Ponyo…beautiful artwork and kids seem to love them. The Secret World of Arrietty is a retelling of The Borrowers, which I loved as a kid.

The only one he did not like was Godzilla 1984 “Because he did not verse anybody”.

All four of the Indiana Jones movies.
I haven’t read all the posts yet, so forgive me if this is redundant.

But when my son was growing up, he LOVED the “Young Indiana Jones” movies. He now shows them to his own sons, and they love them just as much as he did. One interesting thing about them is that besides depicting a heroic young man’s adventures, they contain quite a lot of history. Several of them are set during WWI, and one meets Marshal Petain, Foch, Sassoon. One learns about Belgian soldiers fighting under French commanders. One meets Von Richtofen and his “flying circus”. Very, very good in that way. There are episodes in the 20s, in which young Indiana Jones meets people like George M. Cohan and interacts with the famous names of Vaudeville. Very educational, really.

It is more for a school aged kid.
Ah, but the sad news is they grow up so quickly.

By the time my son was in pre-school I already had in my mind movies and video games I wanted to watch and play when he was older.

When he was a youngster my son went through a stage when he would watch a video tape of The Music Man (Warner Bros, 1962; Robert Preston, Shirley Jones) at least once per day.
Disclaimer for 2-year-olds
Some adult innuendo. Same probably goes for most wholesome old timey hollywood musicals.
Many similar wholesome old timey hollywood musicals out there.

I’d forgotten about musicals! My little guy loved the Yul Brenner version of “The King and I”. We would sing and sing.

I watched “The Jungle Book” last night because it was just about the only decent movie I could find. I can’t imagine a little boy-I am a girl-not liking that movie. It has a good moral ethical-foundation. Not much music that I was aware of. What about “Lassie”, “The Black Stallion and a few others?”

Apparently you watched the recent live action remake of Jungle Book.

The best is this one

And the original Winnie the Pooh

Then there are the original Peanuts cartoons!
