I v I
You seem to be splitting hairs.
You act as if you have a perfect grasp on the scriptures, but when I post relatively uncomplicated verses you tell me you need them broken down. I break scripture down and you say I’m wrong lol. How do you know? Which is it? Do you understand it or not?
The fact is that
"You act as if you have a perfect grasp on the scriptures".
Often for us Catholics, it’s not really very hard to see errant interpretations of scriptures, because we too read the Bible and we have some 2,000 years of authentic and verifiable Christian teachings to refer to for clarification when needed.
What do you have? Modern preachers, and abridged Bible, your own personal opinions?
Just these problems would indicate that you have a very much higher probability of error than a faithful Catholic like Philthy or myself. Just sayin’…
No. My God does not “attempt to return me to his fold”. My God returns me to His fold - the end. There is no question of whether I will cooperate. He wills me to do as He wants me to do and what He wants me to do I also want to do.
I wrote: "My God never asks me to do anything. "
No, not even to repent and believe. He does not ask this, He COMMANDS it!
Oh, so if you get drunk and shoot your wife or friend then you will automatically just repent and be saved? IOW, it really doesn’t matter how you live or what you do because (according to what you have said above) you are a robot without any choice at all. Yet that is not at all what Our lord Jesus Christ says in His Word.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. (John 13:34)
So…as with all commands there is also the option to disobey. In this case to fail to love one another as Our lord has loved us. Are you now going to tell me that this loving of one another as Jesus loves us is 1. not an action…a work, and 2. to fail in this work is not sin, and then, 3. that such a sin does not separate us from the close fellowship with God that He Himself calls us to?
Let’s look at another very similar scripture. (John 15)
10] If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.
11] These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
12] "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Now, Christ commands us to love one another, and in so doing abide in His love. What then happens if we fail to do that? Do we not cease to abide in His love?
Let’s look at another related scripture. (John 14)
15] "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
So then are not keeping His commandments and loving one another good works? If not, then what do you call them, and where is that definition found in the Bible?
Obedience to Christ’s commandments is a good work…according to the New Testament anyway, so then these good works have much merit with God since our Lord has commanded them.
This is also displayed in Our Lord’s own words in Matthew 25:31-46, where Our Lord plainly tells us that he will judge us all based upon whether we carried out the good works that He lays out right there.
Saint James also goes over all of this beginning in chapter 1:19 and all the way through 2:26, as well. In fact…he plainly tells us that if we profess faith and yet have not works then our faith will not save us.
Sorry, but what you have been telling us does not hold up alongside the Word of God.
Good works alone will not save anyone, but without them, there is no saving faith.
