Japan has a much smaller population than the United States.

And yet, they have a vast number of suicides.

Not even remotely comparable.

A man dying because he wanted to and a man dying because a madman chanced into him on a killing rampage have virtually nothing in common.

Then why does the anti-gun crowd constantly include suicide stats in their analysis?

I’ll answer that for you, they do it to significantly bump their numbers and fluff their argument.

The economic law of scarcity still applies in that particular case. The harder you make it for people to do something means fewer of them will do it.

And please don’t ask me a question and then answer it for me. It proves you’re wanting to have an ideological rant rather than a rational discussion.

I live just two hours from Nashville!

I hope you enjoy our beautiful, bipolar country. Safe travels.

Well, you can dispute my explanation.

And most people would get the rhetorical nature of my question. lighten up.

As soon as people in a democracy start to accept rules, then they are in a republic, not a democracy.
There is no pure democracy. I though we already covered this? Well, accepting “the rules” is exactly what some one said they were not going to do. Nonetheless, republic though we be, we are also a democracy. The two are not exclusive once you accept the term “democracy” to include a republic where the people get to vote on representation.

Speaking for myself only.

I don’t consider myself a Republican, so much as I am a conservative. I do not believe that the government is the only (or best) solution to most problems. I think the federal government has been in overreach mode for a very long time. The Democrats, however, are so close to communism that they make Khrushchev’s boast credible.

Against gun control–absolutely. Legislation to restrict this or that weapon, or to restrict the rights does not solve the fundamental problem of violent crime. It doesn’t even solve the problem of making violent crime against large numbers of people … those who want to do harm will do so, whether it be by airplane, bombs, cars, diesel fuel + fertilizer, etc.

Being a murder victim is not on my bucket list. Therefore, I am a gun-owner.

Well, because the Republican party supports
-pro-life legislation
-traditional marriage
-freedom of religion

And the Church says nothing against firearm ownership.

I wish being a gun owner did virtually anything to stop murder.

Sad reality is that if someone wants to kill you, they have the element of surprise and your carry weapon might be pulled of your corpse and used in more crime.

I don’t know why people turn gun violence into a mental health issue

Come on… it’s Japan… 70 pounds… really??? Shouldn’t it be more like 50? 😛

Vonsalza - I give you the Toronto van massacre that just happened. Killing rampage sans gun.

Simple… guns can’t commit any act of violence by themselves. It’s the people who wield them. Crazy people use guns, knives, whatever to accomplish their objectives. Hell, a guy flattened group of people in Toronto with a bus.

Yea, once they discover people double up their rope, they’ll keep dropping the limit till dental floss is outlawed.

Guns are a lethal weapon designed to kill. I don’t think every person who commits a violent crime is mentally ill. I think guns gives you the capacity to kill more people than any other weapon. The US has a gun violence problem. You cannot compare guns to a car. A car is not a weapon, sure it can be used as one, but cars were not designed to kill. The purpose of a gun is to kill. I cannot think of any other purpose it serves.

However, if you take a gun, a car, a pressure cooker, or anything else and put it in the hands of a crazy person, you have a serious problem.
