Omg I hate when people make books criticizing other’s religions. Christians do it more than anyone, though. A taste of your own medicine.

Pardon my ignorance, who is Jack Chick? What does he want? Is he or was he a Catholic?
Just Curious?

He’s a legend on the Net - it seems at times 🙂 - who publishes tracts, comics, inexpensive books, for evangelistic purposes. Theologically he is a King James Version-Only Baptist, Dispensational post (?)-tribulational Premillennialist

None of which is in itself remarkable - what marks him out, is that his tracts & comics are often (not always) very anti-Catholic, in an extremely ill-informed way - much of what he says is based on 19th-century books of dubious or non-existent reliability.

For a taster, go to post 1& click the link.

He has something of a cult following among collectors of comics 🙂

Did I mention that his notion of history is mildly paranoid ? If something bad happens - the Popedunnit. This includes
  • causing WW1
  • causing WW2
  • founding Islam
    • the KKK
    • the Illuminati
  • supporting the ex-seminarian Adolf Hitler
  • trying to destroy the KJV Bible
    • by sending that crafty Jesuit Newman to infiltrate the Church of England
  • engineering the assassination of Pres. Lincoln
  • to name a few of the Pope’s activities
Not surprisingly, Chick’s capacity for confusing make-believe with fact has done little for his reputation among Catholics 😦

A very amusing answer to your question can be found here: 10zenmonkeys.com/2006/12/19/the-satanic-cosmology-of-jack-chick/

Jack Chick is a KJV-Only Fundamentalist Pre Trib moron. He claims he want to save the souls of the damned, and no, he was never a Catholic.

Jack Chick makes those little four-panel comic tracts that first appeared in the '50’s and probably reached max popularity in the '70’s, which is why they all have a ‘70’s look. Some are sweet presentations of the Gospel, while others are conspiracy theories he got from books no one believes anymore, and from people who befriended him when he was a sheltered, small-town young man trying to let God use his love of comics to reach people for Jesus. Well, he was and still is gullible toward anyone who seems paranoid and wary at best of normal people. I have some experience with this mentality, and it has nothing to do with actual hate. it has to do with growing up in a culture that is dying and lonely. You have to be immersed in it awhile to get the idea of it. It’s scary.:whacky:
I used to spread Chick stuff because some of his less campy tracts had gotten through to me when I was a seeker. I thought whatever got people reading and asking and thinking about Jesus was worth being a little silly. But I slowly started to lose my previously firm sense of plausibility testing. I agonized and prayed and read commentaries about Chick and his sources. One day, the words flashed in my mind, “Thou shalt not bear false witness” and I knew the answer. I could not spread that propaganda anymore. The Truth can’t use a pack of lies. The Truth doesn’t need liars’ help! I threw it away, except a few foreign-language ones that don’t present anything but the straight Gospel. I’m still deciding about those. I guess they must go, too. 😊
Most people who read them are just looking for laughs or appreciating the atristic style. The unrealistic dialogue can become addictive, like a TV show. One shows a group of bad ancient people hanging around a street. One man says to another, “I love drugs, do you?” The other replies, “No, murder and incest are my things.” :rotfl: In one of the large comics, an anti-rock one, a girl says, “Want to hear my new rock record?” Has anyone ever said that, anywhere? You know, I am reasonably confident that Chick reads this site. I wonder if he posts.

Very humbly… BALONEY.

Spend a few days in the middle east and see what the press there has to say about Israel and the West.

We must not forget, that there are many who really think they mean well- nor must we delight in the ignorance of others.

I will not speculate on Mr. Chick’s level of integrity or his knowledge or lack thereof.

The best medicine for such things is unceasing prayer, and this is all we can do proactively.

Chick is so ridiculous that he is a joke… even among protestants… anyone who takes it seriously really isn’t too bright…
Except that it can be addictive, as I said above. Psychologists often point out that we are influenced much more than we know by what we are repeatedly exposed to. Most Chick readers start out just looking at them for laughs. After a while, they start wondering if part of it is true. Part of it is – everyone needs Jesus, and everyone needs to turn away from a sinful way of life, or be punished after death eternally. But people see the little footnotes and don’t know half or more of them refer to other Chick materials. They think, well this guy’s done some homework…I hope he’s wrong…I wonder… It’s very easy to get sucked in a little at a time. The reaction that would help most would be a rebuttal in kind: widely distributed comics refuting all his mistakes and all the lies in his tracts. If I were a cartoonist I could do it, but I’m not, and I have too much else to do.

Anyone with an even cursory knowledge of Egyptian deities will know that it is Osiris that is paired with Isis and Horus.

Seb is sometimes a variant name of Geb, but as he is the personification of the Earth, he is paired with Nut, the sky goddess, not Isis and Horus.

Jack’s logic is illogical… at best.

Look at the section of his tract that deals with purgatory. He says people have been in purgatory for centuries (so poor “Helen” doesn’t even know when she’ll get out.)

How does he know this? Has he been to purgatory? No, that’s impossible, because, according to him and the Bible, purgatory doesn’t exist! He even goes on to point that out! So how can someone spend centuries in a place that doesn’t even exist? :hmmm: Can he argue that he learned this information from a Catholic? How would the Catholic know how long anyone’s been in purgatory? Besides, why would he trust the word of a Catholic?

Plus he equates purgatory with “not being saved”, even though he himself says that it is a place of cleansing before entering Heaven.:ehh: Well, here’s a newsflash for you, Jack… if you get to purgatory, you’re assured of getting to Heaven. You can’t be “demoted” from purgatory to hell. So “Helen” IS saved if she’s in purgatory, whether she’s there five minutes or five hundred years. Besides, time in Heaven, Hell and Purgatory isn’t measured in earthly time.

I love the argument “if it’s not in the Bible, then you shouldn’t believe in it!” (I used to argue that gasoline-powered cars aren’t in the Bible until I read that “the apostles were all in one accord”, so at least Honda was around back then! 😛 )

I have an interesting tale.
A few years ago, I went to a Protestant chain bookstore in SoCal (they don’t carry Catholic materials). I was doing some apologetic research and didn’t let on that I was Catholic.
I asked them if they had any Chick publications - specifically the anti-Catholic stuff (“Alberto”, “The Death Cookie”, “Why is Mary Crying”, etc.), because there were none displayed in the store.
The woman took me into a back room where they had boxes of the stuff and let me browse through them.
They didn’t even have the guts to display this garbage but were more than willing to show a “fellow anti-Catholic” where he could get his hands on some.

**Talk about anti-Catholicism! **

Lest anyone believe that these writings constitute only a fringe of Christianity’s mainstream, one should visit:

americanpresbyterianchurch.org/Objects%20of%20Worship.htm

To be fair, I can find no reason to believe that “The
American Presbyterian Church” is little more than a small sect… the Presbyterians are rather divided “The split P’s” is the joke some of their own make…

Still this sort of “scholarship” is not limited to comic booklets that are not comical at all, but still finds life on the WWW no less, as legitimate and scholarly writing. Pray that less discearning minds be given the Grace and fortitude it takes to seek out more information, when presented with such pseudo-scholarly slop.

You should tell that to the local congregations that put one in my mailbox every month.

It is not the anti-Catholic variety, more the “You should get saved so as to not go to hell like ‘Bob’” variety.

In and of themselves they represnet a pretty classic/traditional fundamentalist approach: Accept Jesus as your personal Lord & Savior, attend a church that preaches the Bible, and spread the word. Many would find the theology if not the tone to be pretty much par for the course. In light of that, I can’t help but wonder how many would think that JTC lit is otherwise to be trusted, given how solid they judge the material written without specific reference to the “Romanists”? While hardly convincing to us, is this the best education non-Catholics are getting about us?

There are many former Catholics out there speaking out against Catholicism. The Pastor at a Church my co-Worker attends is such a person. He said the theology taught at the Perish he attended focused on the authority of the clergy to a greater extent than God’s authority.

That leaves me scratching my head and befuddled. I know there are variations in styles and tones in the many diocese and parishes in the US, but few and far between are the ones I have visited that ever mentioned the “A” word.

But for some of these folks to be right, we have to be wrong. Frequently eggregiously so.

This one co-worker who went to Catholic school K-12, went to Mass every weekend, and his sacraments of initiation once told me with insistence that he knew NOTHING of Jesus before being saved. Not ZIP, which is of course part of why he was doing some of the less Christian things he did before he “was saved”. I was at a loss - he is telling me 18+ years in a Catholic home and going to Mass and Catholic school and he new NOTHING of Jesus…

Ok, well here’s hoping we get the word out better the next time…

In two different tracts, Chick has men sy: “Satan gets kids into punk rock, thinking Hell will be party time.” One adds, “But they will never see their friends in Hell, only everlasting punishment”, or something like that. The other finishes with something along the lines of, “Some are so eager to get there that they commit suicide.” In the one about how we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving as we should anymore, a whole family minus the evangelist and a child expect “a wonderful party” when they get to Hell. Has anyone ever heard of people wanting to go to Hell because they think it’s a party? I was once a punk rocker, and I don’t recall that as a popular idea. Most punks don’t even believe in Hell. And they probably don’t often commit suicide to get there and party. They are mostly smart, creative but easily bored or angry young people who want to express themselves and hate to feel used. Many punks are highly idealistic. Others just want to be left alone to do what they want. Some are trying to express themselves and be true to themselves. Some place a huge value on self-sufficiency. There are all kinds of punks. But, to party in Hell? Nope. Not a part of the vision where I hung out.
