This is Annie’s husband Will I endorse everything she wrote below I have seen the movie and would change nothing. She read it to me before sending it and asked me what she should change I told her “nothing, send it”.

" I had planned to see the movie today but I was unable to due to a health issue. My hubby did go however and we discussed it when he returned this will have to suffice, sorry. Basically Mr. D’ Souza’s message is that the USA is the best country because it is the richest. It seems, that he believes, that the salvation of this country would be to return to the Constitution and Capitalism.

In order to deal with this it would be handy to know what Mr. D’ Souza means by “Capitalism”. My definition is like that of G. K. Chesterton “When I say “Capitalism,” I commonly mean something that may be stated thus: “That economic condition in which there is a class of capitalists roughly recognizable and relatively small, in whose possession so much of the capital is concentrated as to necessitate a very large majority of the citizens serving those capitalists for a wage.” (The Outline of Sanity,pp. 42-3 in the Ignatius Press collected works edition)

To begin with I do not believe that Capitalism is the best economic system. As I see it a system called subsidiarity or distributism is the better system. It most closely resembles the economic system outlined in Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical Rerum Novarum. However no economic system will save us. Our problems go deeper than that. I’m for lower taxes but not so I’ll have more disposable income to get more stuff so that the people of the poorer nations will want to come here and get their hands on the “American dream”. I am for lower taxes so that we can more fully fulfill Matt. 25. I’m for lower taxes so that our money does not go to the likes of Planned Parenthood or Solyndra

In the Old Testament God sometimes used Israel’s enemies to punish them for their sins. Abortion is legal in this country; homosexuality is legal as is euthanasia in some states. We need for our people to get back to the Faith of our Fathers. That I’m thinking will be the beginning of the change we very much need."

I don’t remember anywhere in the movie making the claim that the USA is the best country because it is the richest.

It did use India and China as 2 countries that have raised millions of people out of poverty through capitalism.

There were a lot of problems in the world when our country was born and there are still many problems.

How would the world be today if America had not been founded?
We need to safeguard the principles upon which our country was started.

You obviously did not watch the film. First, Edwin, “white people” is a human construct. There are only white individuals, not of whom need to shed a crocodile tear over what some white individuals have done. Second, there are evil and decent people of ALL shades and races. Atrocities have been committed by folks of every hue.
It is quite clear that it will be impossible to discuss this great film with anyone who has not actually seen it. :banghead:

Subsidiarity and distributism are not the same.I agree as does Holy Mother Church,that subsidiairity is the moral way to operate a gov’t.However,capitalism isn’t the bad guy here,we are a Democratic Repulblic operating under a capitalistic economic structure.It is the over reaching arm of big gov’t that is to blame for the ills in our Country.Leave it to the states,local gov’t to make decisions.

May I have your definition of subsidiartiy that differs from distributism and where you found the definition? Below is how I have understood both to mean.

It may have been better to use the term Europeans but I don’t think anyone was sayng that white people have committed all these sins and crimes and the rest of the world are innocent. It has been acknowledged that the indigenous tribes were warring long before the arrival of the Europeans. However the Europeans were warring long before the Islamic invasion but I don’t know too many Europeans or people of European descent would say that since the Europeans were warring it was okay for the people of Islam to invade it.

No,I don’t support big gov’t.I said as much in my last post.I agree with you definition of subsidiarity,however,when I hear the distributism,I automatically think of socialism,which the Church condemns,something our current president is really pushing.If I have misunderstood the term then I stand corrected.

You know Jeanne I understand. I wish that the word “distributism” would go out of use. I think that they still use it because Chesterton and Belloc used it.

Why don’t we be a little honest people. Instead of picking a side lets break down the issues.

Is everything about America good? Not at all
Is it all bad? No
Is the progressive propaganda in schools teaching a twisted history? To a degree
Is capitalism work pretty well? Yes
Is capitalism the best system ever? No, just the best we have tried
Is the pursuit if “stuff” good? Not really
Is our constitution a good document? Yeah it’s pretty sound but remember it’s a system of government don’t treat it like sacred scripture
Is liberal New Age influence and destruction of morality happening? Most defiantly
Is every war we fight just? No

Also let me point out the capitalism that was once started is no longer in existence. We have crony capitalism that’s is bordering quasi-fascism.
So just saying out right America is the best is called nationalism but just hating it isn’t good either. We should work to make our country a free and morally good society with Christian/Catholic principles and if that means abandoning some right wing ideas also (because I’m assuming most people here would identify with the right because you cannot be a left wing catholic sorry) then that’s what must be done.

With that being said I plan on seeing the movie tomorrow and I’ll probably like most of it

Yes, I saw it with my wife last week. That’s why I invited my mom to go with me. We are all impressed with Mr. D’Souza’s talent. Pres. Washington expired almost 215 years ago, but it is still breathtaking to witness what happens to him in “America”. Rob

Did you see his first movie too? They were both good.

It really impresses me that he is an immigrant and has a better grasp of what is happening to our country than many americans.

Yes, I saw 2016, and let’s just say that if every American saw this film, Mitt Romney would be in the White House, and Al Sharpton would be out! I am not a Romney fan, but it’s hard to imagine that anyone would not do a job superior to what Barack Obama has done. :sad_yes: Rob

Yes there was no one more disappointed than me when obama was re-elected. I was not a huge romney fan but I figured he had a good sense of economics and would have a plan to start helping our country recover. We couldn’t afford another 4 years of Obama.
I don’t know what has taken so long for some to finally see the truth about obama that the rest of us saw from the beginning.
More people need to see these movies but they won’t.

Yes there was no one more disappointed than me when obama was re-elected. I was not a huge romney fan but I figured he had a good sense of economics and would have a plan to start helping our country recover. We couldn’t afford another 4 years of Obama.

I haven’t had faith in the average American in a long time, frankly. The most critical human failing in a republic is the preponderant inability of people to admit to making a mistake. The second most dangerous foible of the body politic is gullibility, or believing what one chooses to believe, even if it contradicts plain reality. Maybe these two can be flipped.

My husband and I saw it last night (date night! aren’t we romantic, going to the d’Souza film?!).

We loved the movie. Very well done presentation, with a good strong thesis statement, well-developed points, and a strong conclusion.

The music was awesome!

I don’t think it’s a film that most children would enjoy, although there was an African American family with several children in the theater, and they seemed to love the film. It did have some wonderful cinematography, but since I don’t go to a lot of movies, I am easily-impressed! (As long as it’s not PIXAR, I like it!).

Everyone in the theater applauded when the film was over. I’m guessing that 99.9% of those in attendance have conservative leanings! We actually thought about issuing a blanket invitation for everyone to come over to our place for a discussion about the movie, but it was storming out and we wimped out on being sociable.

I hope that some of you who lean liberal or moderate will go see the movie, or at least rent it when it’s available.

Hi Cat! Glad you saw the movie and liked it!
I thought it was very well done. I also wish liberals would see this movie. I forced myself to sit through michael moore movies to give hin the benefit of the doubt. AMERICA is 10 times better than any michael moore movie.

I hope when it comes out in dvd more people will see it.

Some people applauded at the end also. I would have liked to stay behind and chat with everyone but I had to get home.

I think that most black families would really enjoy this film, if they stay to the end. It is probably over the heads of most children, and maybe too sad in parts. But yeah, some of the music was stirring. The rendition of our National Anthem by Madison Rising at the end was amazing. Yes, many in the audience appauded at the end! Rob
