Has the #MeToo movement become a witch-hunt to a significant degree?

We’ve had sexual assault since we’ve had caves to live in, and probably before.

Conservative mores are an obvious attempt to limit this behavior, but people don’t always and consistently adhere to mores they might profess.

As a shocker, there are also people living in what you call traditionally conservative areas that don’t even ascribe to those mores.
I said “eras,” not “areas.” Read what I actually wrote before you flame me.

And no, conservative mores as they are presented by conservative CAF users do not try to curb sexual abuse. More often than not, they provide a cover for abusers, discourage female autonomy, and deflect responsibility back to the victims.

I think “part of human nature” is likely accurate. That’s not to say that every human has been tempted to it, but that the fundamental problem is sinful human attitudes, and always has been. I suspect, like many “big” sins, it’s a slide - something that’s much more likely to be a temptation to a person who has already allowed selfishness and entitlement to take root.

(I’d say murder, for example, is part of human nature too, even though most of us aren’t tempted to murder. But I suspect all of us are capable of starting down the pat that would push us there.)
Oh, sure. Concupiscence is definitely a thing, but only in the sexual arena do I see it presented as a sincere excuse for hurting other people. If I used the same reasoning to justify murder, stealing, missing Mass, etc, people here would laugh at me.

I’m personally appalled that no one has suggested reading Theology of the Body or Catholic Social Teaching. Society doesn’t exist in a vacuum that’s separate from God and his Church!

Threads such as this SHOULD NOT EXIST because they breed animosity and the subject cannot be discussed in a civil manner. Instead of people respectfully debating and working towards a solution, it is edging towards a battle of the sexes!

I think some people are talking past each other here. I don’t think it was being presented here as an excuse, but just to say that it’s not really the kind of thing you can attribute to “modern morality.” The reason isn’t the sexual revolution or whatever, it’s that people are sinners and this is one manifestation.

I don’t have a problem with women coming forward. I have a problem with women who come forward once they played the game to get ahead in their careers. These are the high-profile women. What many of them describe is very different from the waitress or secretary who has to endure this kind of treatment in order to keep a roof over her head and her kids fed. The other issue that bothers me is that so often sexual assault and sexual harassment are used and described synonymously. They are very different things. I sort of feel sorry for our young people just starting out in the work environment these days because, if they are smart, they are terrified. Especially the young men.

And finally, as a woman, this whole movement has opened my eyes to how we need to do a better job of raising our girls to be confident and willing to not put up with this nonsense from the get-go. So all-in-all, I think it is a good thing, all of this is being exposed for what it is. But I have issues with people like Gwyneth Paltrow rising to the top of her career and then saying enough-is-enough. Enough for her, because she made it to the top of her career, I guess.

I was the one saying you can’t attribute it to modern morality. Theo520 wrote that, “The sexual revolution greatly increased the likelihood of sexual harassment, at leas how it is now viewed.”

Indeed it is a witch hunt, reminiscent of the era of McCarthyism when nearly everyone in Hollywood and the music industry was thought to be a communist or associate with communists, which led to many suicides. No doubt some of the accusations of sexual misconduct are true, and should be dealt with according to the law. But what we have here is not based on due process but rather hearsay, innuendo, and a rush to judgment, and it sets a most dangerous precedent in rooting out the real victimizers of women, who deserve to be punished. Further, as we know, once an individual is accused of such a crime, even if it turns out they are innocent, their reputation has been irreparably damaged.

Confidence won’t protect girls against rape, pedophilia, cyber-bullying, and a whole host of other things. We as a society need to do a better job of believing victims, increasing trust in the justice system, and educating people about consent before we can presume to tell girls how they need to shape up.

Most of the people involved in the #MeToo movement aren’t naming names or bringing anyone to court, though. They’re just saying “yeah, I experienced this too.”

That is a very fair point.

A lot of traditional approaches are mainly about maintaining a facade of propriety, no matter what is happening in private. And if there is something bad going on in private, there was no possible recourse for the victims, especially if the perp was a member of the family or an authority figure.

I just had to tell a Catholic man that the way a woman dresses does not justify unsolicited sexual advances. It’s not a battle of the sexes - the conflict is between people who take sexual abuse seriously, and those who don’t.

Yes, but when women come forward who were sidelined in their careers, it’s treated as sour grapes on their part.

So it is actually valuable when successful people like Gwyneth Paltrow come forward.

And when people like Meryl Streep are silent, it’s a dog that didn’t bark.

You are feeling very defensive if you think there was a ‘flame’ in my comments. My post worked equally well for bot era and area.

Please explain your insult to all ‘conservative’ CAF posters, back up your claim with some examples. That way you won’t just be flinging ad hominems like a monkey flings you know what.

I didn’t “fling ad hominems.” I outlined my concerns pretty clearly in the post you originally responded to.

Don’t be silly

There is a reason street walkers dress the way they do, call it nonverbal solicitation. Potential ‘johns’ are just responding to the nonverbal cues when they respond with a verbal advance.

The woman wasn’t a street walker - she was his mother’s employee, which created an objective power imbalance. He himself admitted that the attempted kiss was unsolicited, and ultimately unwanted.

Weeeell, we know that conservative mores do not protect boys in Afghanistan from abuse.

Conservative/traditional doesn’t necessarily mean safer for children.

Not to mention that most of the women involved in the #MeToo movement don’t work in the sex industry, although women who do should still be afforded the same respect and dignity as any other woman. They are children of God, after all.

Maybe she didn’t feel safe enough, or think she would be taken seriously until that point.
That may very well be the case. However, you don’t go along with abhorrent behavior so you can get what you want because you feel inadequate and then wait until years later to expose it for what it is. : Sexual assault and sexual harassment are two different things. Sexual assault should be reported to the law immediately. Sexual harassment should be reported to authorities immediately and then one should consider suing the offending parties if the issue isn’t resolved. Not stick around to build a career in the industry that is seemingly built around this sort of thing, without doing something is real time to have corrections made. I realize my attitude can be considered by many as victim blaming, but I don’t see it that way. If someone clobbered you over the head in a really bad part of town, but you kept going back, and kept getting clobbered, what would you expect others might think about that? It just defies common sense. Unless, of course, you were getting something in return for the clobber that you thought made it worthwhile. And you realized the clobber was wrong, but liked what you were getting in return, so you decided to look the other way when you got clobbered. To me, this sort of thing with these celebrities is very transactional. If some man at my job exposed himself to me and then implied I could advance my career by engaging him, I promise you it would be the last time he tried that with me. It wouldn’t go well for him. I am a confident person and know I can work three jobs if I have to to support myself. That is my point. We need to raise our girls to know they don’t have to tolerate this nonsense.
