Have any Non-Catholics here read the Catechism of the Catholic Church?

I dont think that it is poorly written as someone suggested, but it is kinda hard to read.

It is not that kind of book that you read from beginning to end, rather use it as a reference book on certain topics, at least thats how i do it.
Others might have a different approach.

“I would not believe in the Gospel myself if the authority of the Catholic Church did not influence me to do so.”
Against the letter of Mani, 5,6, 397 A.D.
Unfortunately I do not agree. The Gospel itself influences me to believe in it. The Church is the pillar of truth. The Church doesn’t invent or influence truth.

I have the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I think that it is obvious that, as a Protestant, I do not agree with many things it says. However, when discussing matters about Church teachings I feel it only right to get my information from the source rather than from non-Catholics or Catholics who may not fully know the Church’s teachings.
Absolutely agree, SyCarl, and thank you for showing us the respect that many in disagreement with The Church do not.

👍

If any Non-Catholic has read the Catechism of the Catholic Church please answer 2 questions.
  1. please tell us if you read it in it’s entirety or have read parts (if in part, which part(s))?
  2. and please say what you liked and disliked about its teachings
I read a good part of it ten years or so ago. It sits on my bookshelf as a reference when I have a question about Catholic beliefs.

I like it as a very accessible source of information. While I don’t agree with all of Catholic doctrine, I wouldn’t say that I “dislike” what I read.

I have begun to read it. In my opinion it is quite well written. A feature I especially like is the scripture references. I read the passages from the Catechism and then write down the scripture reference that accompanies it. It is also well done in terms of a subject index.

Far too many may not realize that the translation of that second sentence is “If I agreed with Christ, I woud be Catholic.”
This is what I really dislike about this forum. I answer a question honestly, respectfully, and what response do I get? Why do you people even ask?

And I answered the question honestly, respectfully, and with the truth. I all honesty, what I told you was indeed the truth. What you’re telling me now, is that you really don’t like the truth. I hope you don’t expect to come to a Catholic Forum, and get something other than truth. If there was no love for fellow man, I would not put the truth out there to consider. It’s very serious, and worth considering what was said, rather than taking it personally.

Co-mediatrix
Co-redemptrix
Queen of Heaven

The proclamations of Mary made by the magisterium:

None shall enter except through thee (Mary).
Doing that which cannot be done only by diety.
You might want to read the catechism again, or at least once. One of her titles is not co-mediatrix, but mediatrix. And I do not think the term co-redemptrix is even used in the catechism.

A little more reading of the catechism itself would lend you to a better understanding or at least an accurate one.

Hi masuwerte,

Catholics view truth through their Catholic lens and we don’t. So we who are Protestant naturally prefix the word “truth” with the word Protestant, e.g. Protestant Truth Society:

protestant-truth.org/

and Catholics prefix the word truth with the word Catholic, e.g. Catholic Truth Society:

cts-online.org.uk/

I guess this is obvious but it does no harm to remind ourselves of how we sometimes overlook the obvious. Please don’t get disheartened. Just think of the plight of the Orthodox.

:bounce: Catholics endorse the Catholic Truth Society

:bounce: Protestants endorse the Protestant Truth Society

😦 Orthodox Christians have No Truth Society to endorse

Encouragingly,
Mick

But if the Orthodox did have a Truth Society the chances are it would be autocephalous!

Oh well, back to reading the Catechism.

Informatively,
Mick

Mick,
Neither do I desire that these become discouraged. This is a tool of Satan. I hope that the Holy Spirit will work in hearts to bring us all to greater understandings of God. Those of us who earnestly seek, will indeed find.

I must say, however, that it’s much more than Catholic truth vs Protestant truth. Christ is the Truth, and that is what I am concerned with. So, there is no valid alternatives to the truth of Christ. Neither is there a valid alternative to the religion established and built by Christ. I desire to follow Christ, and therefore I am Catholic because I am Christian, and desire to be with what Christ established. If Christ established something else, I would be a member of that establishment because is is where He wants me. Nothing else stacks up in any way one looks at it. Protestantism is easily verifiable to be a poor alternative, as it has some truth, but substantial false doctrine. If we love others, we share that with them. The telltale sign would be if we just laughed at them, knowing that we somehow were superior. However, that kind of mindset is not Christian. We learn truth, because we love ourselves. So, we share the truth, because we love others.

Hey MDK,

That all sounds great but what actually happened a few posts ago was that you hurt a person’s feelings and our Christian duty when we become aware that we’ve done such a thing, even if it is unintentional, is to say sorry. I just wish you’d done that.

Maybe you can do it now?

Hopefully,
Mick

Mick,

Honestly… how is it good or beneficial to apologize for something one didn’t do? Do we sort things out properly by this? It really doesn’t help anything in the long run. However, it’s good to promote understanding. Therefore, I’m not going to apologize, because there was no intent to hurt feelings. I would say it again, as it needs to be said so that some wake up from their slumber. You have no earthly idea whether I have had a discussion with this person (in which I did not apologize, but explained the intent). If you still want to sit in judgment, that is up to you. What actually happened a few posts ago was not aimed at an individual, but errant thinking that leads people from Christ. I’m confident that people were offended by things Christ said as well. However, are you going to ask Him to apologize to those who walked away from His teachings on the Eucharist because it was a hard saying… because they chose instead to be offended or disheartened by this rather than to look into it to determine if it was true and had tremendous merit for their lives?

Why should we apologize for the truth, aimed at waking some up and bringing one closer to Christ? I don’t think we should get into that business to apologize for truth which can benefit one or many.

It is indeed not a Christian duty to apologize for something one did not do. Apologizing for something one did not do would be a lie. Lies don’t lead one to Christ.

I had noticed the mockery in that response. A little off is way off. There is an analogy in scripture concerning small sins…

The writer of the post would know best, would he not? The writer of the post will tell you that you are completely wrong about this. Therefore, you are perhaps bending if not breaking God’s eighth commandment, as it depends on what is in your heart which I can’t see. It’s really sad that truthful statements are treated with such disdain… or perhaps because they come from a Catholic who loves Christ and so does not desire to see His religion distorted and missed out by those who may not know very well the Way, Truth and Life. It’s sad that Christ’s words seemed arrogant to some when He spoke them. They would certainly be if they were not true. However, His words are true, as is His Church. What He taught was so merciful and wonderful, even if some thought they were arrogant and opposed to the way they had been living and believing. We know that anyone of the truth knows Him, and hears His voice.

You’re in denial…:tsktsk:
Not at all. If you but knew the real truth, you would not say this.

Knowing what was intended and what was written, I can tell you that you have bent if not broken the eighth Commandment.

Yes, it is as I say, because I have told you the truth. Why should one apologize for a mistake of another or others? Is this really in touch with reality? Knowing what I wrote and the reason, I stand with the Truth, even if I have to stand alone. I feel fine facing Christ with this. I would be dishonest if I had written differently. The Truth is that important. I don’t know what else I can do. It’s up to you to accept or reject the truth. It’s a reflection of which side of the truth you are on. Likewise, it’s up to all of us to accept the ultimate Truth or not.
