Have you ever walked out on a movie?

One summer in the early 60’s my female cousin and I were madly in love with Paul Newman so any movie he was in was a “must see”. I drove us to the drive-in theater one rainy summer night to see “The Hustler”. We came back from the refreshment stand and I reached over to adjust the speaker box we had attached to the window when…lightning struck and the car lit up. I quickly threw the speaker out the window because we had both been shocked and as soon as we realized we were alive and unharmed we left the drive-in. Forty years later I noticed “The Hustler” was playing on the movie channel so I got my popcorn ready and prepared myself for a wonderful evening to see the movie I had left behind. After 15 minutes of torture I had to turn it off. Even handsome Paul Newman wasn’t enough to hold my interest.

Movies I walked out on:

** Water World**
Started out all right but then the “hero” announced he was going to kill a child because the water supply wasn’t enough to get the three of them (self, child and her mother) where they were going. I left at that point. Who wants to watch a show about a “hero” who kills children in front of their mothers?

** From Dusk to Dawn**
Two men robbed a liquor store, set the clerk on fire **(!) **and burned down the store. Then we see they have a woman bound and gagged in the trunk of their car. A little later one of them murders the woman.
*These *are the heroes. I left.

** The Matrix**
This one started out well: a techno-thriller with a mystery to it. But then I learned the premise. The Machines raised humans in life support tubes and provided them a full virtual-reality world to live in – so they could harvest our body heat.
That is the dumbest idea I had heard in my memory. The energy (name removed by moderator)ut needed to keep one human alive in a tube had to have been many times what they could harvest as body heat from a thousand humans. It was so dumb it spoiled the movie for me.

Never walked out of one but did fall asleep in the theater watching John Candy in Uncle Buck. :o

Movies I would have walked out on (but couldn’t)

**Toys
I **was at my sister’s house for Christmas, and this was on tv. Other people were watching it so I couldn’t turn it off or change the channel.
I’ve seen worse but I wouldn have prefrered no movie to that one.

Dogma
I watched this one with my friend Jamie, at Jamie’s asking. Jamie keeps trying to expand my horizons. 🤷
As someone already said, this movie is blasphemous, and it gravely misrepresents God and Christ, not to mention Christians.

Rocky Horror Picture Show
Another of Jamie’s attempts to broaden my horizons. Jamie seemed to think the show was just chock full of interesting symbolism. I just saw moral squalor, egregious violence and pointless silliness.

I saw Atonement. That is the crummiest movie I have ever watched.
I am currently “reading” the book. Well no, I am not. I walked out on the book. No really, I have. I can’t read anymore. I can’t stand the child character Briony and it’s just going to hell in a hand-basket. I don’t want to read the suffering that child is about to make other’s endure. I knew the movie was about a child making an accusation and seriously hurting other people, but had no idea how bad it is. With all movie hits, I like to read the book first, but yeah, I think I’ll skip the movie too.

This story is simply – terrible.

I walked out of “Brother Bear,” which was a Disney animated movie back in 2003. I knew it would have some New Age stuff in it, but the first few minutes it was just so blatant that I walked out.
Not to be Captain Obvious here – but it’s depicting the “old age” religion of Native Americans – not “New Age” drivel. THAT REALLY WAS how Native Americans lived their spiritual life. 🤷

There’s Something About Mary

Egads the opening scene was bad enough (the zipper) but when the “hair gel” scene came on, I couldn’t take anymore. I just walked. I won’t watch Ben Stiller comedies. Our friend brought a Stiller flick over about him getting married in San Francisco, DH and I only made it to the scene where they are driving on their honeymoon. We can’t do it.

The other one is Titanic. Ri-dic-u-lous.

I was going to ask about Atonement…it looks a little too…what’s the word…contrived, from the coming attractions…although, I can be a sap for a romantic story.

Mirror Mirror–mamacita–if you are both reading this…haha…I thought of you as I watched a Lifetime movie this evening called Derailed, with Jennifer Anniston. A little far fetched, but pretty good. I remember you saying, MM, how much you loathe Jennifer Anniston movies…lol I have seen a few, this one is probably one of her better acting moments, though.

I can’t recall…did you say you both saw Derailed?

I’ve walked out on a few movies, but only the unbearably mawkish Rain Man comes immediately to mind. You know that sickly sweet false sentimentality you get watching Forrest Gump? You will OD on that in Rain Man. ~yeccchhhhhh~

Turned off VHS rentals:

“8 mm” starring Nicholas Cage. Nothing on the description on the box let you know it was basically pornography. The premise was a detective takes a job from a woman who found a video her husband had made in which a woman was killed. She believes the woman was actually killed to make the movie and wants to know the truth. Well, the movie was about S&M movies. The detective watched many of the movies trying to get clues. Needles to say I saw too much and turned the movie off after about twenty minutes. I complained to the Rental store saying they need to put an X rating on the movie, not just an R.
Whew, got that off my chest!

“In the company of Wolves” - movie about wolves, foreign film I think, very hard to follow. Waited hoping something would happen to clear it up, never did, after 30 minutes gave up and turned it off.

Watched hoping it would get better, but never did:

“Joe vs the Volcano” - what was the point of this movie?
“Raising Arizona” - not Nicholas Cages best.

Walked out of Movie theater:

Not sure of name, something like Sandlot, but not that. About a group of inner city black kids, going to Catholic school. A white guy is conned into being a coach of a little league baseball team. Don’t know any more than that.
Very bad language coming out of the mouths of 5 year olds up to 12 year olds. My husband and I walked out, embarrased to see mothers with their 8 year olds there to watch this filfth. Sadly, it didn’t seem to faze them. Also put the Catholic church in very bad light.

I didn’t see that one for exactly the same reason as you.

Never heard of it? Was it direct to dvd?
“Joe vs the Volcano” - what was the point of this movie?
To intoduce Tom Hanks to Rita Wilson (his wife).
“Raising Arizona” - not Nicholas Cages best.

I love that movie. I love it more every time it comes on.

Are you thinking of Harball with Keanu Reaves? Maybe you thougt it was Catholic school kids because it’s base on a true story about Cabrini Green tenements in Chicago. It was a good story, but it was hacked up by all involved.

The one movie I ever walked out on was “Making Love” with Harry Hamlin & Michael Ontkean. It was released in 1982. Basic story, married cop sees a doctor for something. They “click” and fall in love. A big scene is where the two men passionately kissed. The best part of that movie was the audience. As the men are leaning seductively toward each other, a woman toward the back cried out "DON’T DO IT!!! That was certainly a welcome release to laugh out loud.

I have very low taste in movies. Because I am an odd female, I find chick flicks boring. Although I will watch them if forced to by female friends:rolleyes:

I like almost every horror movie around except the Saw movies. I have watched the first three because I promised my friend I would watch with her. I found Jigsaw very obnoxious and preachy. I can get sermons without the blood and torture, thank you very much.😛 I couldn’t finish watching Hell Raiser. That movie just freaked me out!

I like a lot of guy movies like Blazing Saddles or Star Wars. Fart jokes don’t bother me at all.

I don’t want any movie to teach me anything. All I want from such entertainment is popcorn fare. If I want to learn something or be challanged I will read a book. That is why I avoided movies like Crash(I think that is the name) or AI.

My standards are low.😃

I did walk turn off Napoleaon Dynamite. Sorry, I think that I am too old to get this movie.

The only movie that I can remember walking out of was Runaway Train. It was many years ago but that movie was very, very stupid. All I remember of the plot was that it all seemed highly implausable. I think that it won an Oscar. I remember the critics loved it and I was young enough to be impressed by the criticis reviews.

I also turned off the Hills Have Eyes Two. Just all together a dumb movie.

“Raising Arizona” - not Nicholas Cages best.

I LOVED Raising Arizona. He He He.

Definately wasn’t the Sandlot. That’s a cute movie that I’d recommend to anyone.

I nearly walked out of the Leonardo DeCapio version of Romeo & Juliet.

Nacho Libre was awful. I’d heard it was funny, but my husband kept saying don’t do it. I ended up renting it. He was right. I should have listened to him. I like silly comedies, but this was too studpid for words. Sacreligious and filthy too. They took the idea for a cute movie and ruined it. It figures.

I remember walking out on the spoof of the Wild, Wild West with Will Smith. I was there with the kids, and the opening scene was a little racy. I figured the whole thing would be, so I walked out with my kids. (My husband was sooooo mad at me). Anyway, I have since seen the movie, and, outside that first scene (with him and that woman in the water tower), it was fine.

Raising Arizona and Napolean Dynamite are two favorites. I think you “have to have been there” for those types. I grew up in a town just like the one in Napoleon Dynamite. It’s so familiar 😛 .

I love movies with John Candy, Dan Akroyd, et. al. I guess I have a thing for Canadian humor. That’s what comes from living on the border, I guess. 😃

I couldn’t stop watching Missing in America because we were watching it with friends at their house. At the end I was so upset and disgusted it almost broke our friendship with them.

Most of the film was pretty stock stuff about veterans unable to reintegrate into American society–the ones in the film had become reclusive survivalists. It was what happened to the half Vietnamese girl that really got me going. The whole thing was leftist exploitation and utter nonsense–I could have let all that slide, but the manipulative ending was cruel and unnecessary.

I know why our friends, especially the wife liked it–she was a preschool teacher who’s just plain soppy about kids. She gets an odd emotional satisfaction from films about children in danger.🤷 But, it was not a film I’d recommend to anyone as a “fun evening”. Blech!

I was going to ask about Atonement…it looks a little too…what’s the word…contrived, from the coming attractions…although, I can be a sap for a romantic story.
I know the back of the DVD case says it’s a great romantic story, but I definitely would not classify it as one. My wife went in to it hoping for this and was sorely disappointed!

We have never walked out of (or turned off) a movie, at least to the best of my recollection. No matter how bad the movie is, we always hold out hope that something will come along and redeem the movie. Here are some movies I wish I had turned off:

Million Dollar Hotel - I thought it would be good because Mel Gibson was in it. I thought very wrong! I think this wins the award for the most twisted, stupid, and utterly waste-of-time movie that I have ever seen. And yet I inexplicably sat through the whole thing! :hypno: :banghead: If I hadn’t watched it with a friend who confirmed my feelings, I would have sworn the whole experience was just a bad dream!

Little Miss Sunshine - I thought it would be good because Steve Carell was in it. I thought very wrong! Any movie that climaxes with a scence of a little girl doing a strip tease has got serious problems!

The Departed - It had so many big names in it, but it was utterly pointless (not to mention crude).

The Good Shepherd - I thought this movie had such potential based on the premise, but it was highly disturbing and very disappointing.

I’m sure there are more, but I’ve probably blocked them from my memory! 🙂
