Now you sound like you’re trolling. Everybody knows no pope said anything of the sort.

He described it as a “first step towards morality” not the accomplishment of it. It’s a recognition of the harms of promiscuity and a (feeble) attempt to mitigate that harm (even if it is only a recognition of the lesser harm of a physically fatal disease).
My very first thought as well - trolling.

It’s roughly analogous to a man who discovers his girlfriend in the act of cheating on him who becomes enraged, picks up a bat with the intent to bash her skull open and changes his mind at the last second and breaks her shoulder instead. He repented in time of the desire to kill, but didn’t go so far as to let go of his desire for physical vengeance altogether. But nobody in his right mind lauds him for it. He made a first step towards turning away from his vengeance and rage, but still committed a serious sin (and crime!).
Would you prefer that the OP’s son not protect himself? And I’m not sure where in her post she condoned her son’s actions or how she is a troll because of it.

It’s because it is two hot button issues that ultimately start a flame war between the mean, uncharitable traditionalists versus the everything is accepted crowd. Total caricatures BTW, but as you can see in past posts, people are passionate about these issues.

As for the son, perhaps there is a link here? Was the father always harsh and emotionally distant? Gay men are as diverse as any other group and I’m not a subscriber to theories that attempt to creating sweeping explanations for all same sex attractions, but it IS a pretty old stereotype of the gay man that they didn’t have a healthy relationship with their father. s.
Dads can take this news pretty hard sometimes. Perhaps your on to something. Perhaps Dad already suspects, and this is his way of working through it. Dad may seek to balm his wounds by turning to fundamentalism.

If the son is the only male heir, then that branch of the family line ends. Some men feel may feel their masculinity has been somehow…diminished if they find out their son is gay. The son, knowing all this must feel awful. Moma just wants to hold it all together. It is all so very heart rending.

I thought about that too myself. Double feature, comparing the SSPX to the taliban and Gay son in one thread. Actually it would be nice if it turned out to be a flame. Just one less story of heartache in a world of real ones.

It would be perfectly Christian of you, OP, to kick your son out of the home.

You’ve gotta realise some people roll far from the tree and disowning them would be completely fine.

Sure. He’s “a good boy and a loving son,” but kick him out because he was honest with you.

Kick him out because he’s a sodomite and an embarrassment.

If you have problems with rejection, I advise you see a therapist.

What personal comments? If you actually read what I wrote you would see that I agree with you. Let’s cover the main points:
  1. Homosexuality is a disordered state of being.
  2. Homosexual sex is a mortal sin.
  3. Rejection of the Church, Our Lord, and embracing sin equals damnation.
  4. Judgement is God’s alone.
This is all I’ve said. It lines up with the faith. Do you dislike the fact that I said it or maybe you’ve misinterpreted my intentions? Either way I won’t offer any further clarifications.

I have been a bystander watching the exchange between you and smgs and severus.
I have observed that you have said that they were okay with unrepentant sin and accepting of sodomy. Nowhere does he say that. All he states are the conditions for mortal sin. You have again and again insisted on attributing points of views which was in no way consistent with what they said.

(1) Not all gay people engage in sodomy.
(2) People who engage in sodomy are sinners like the rest of us. Would you kick out a son who you suspected might be having sex with his girlfriend? If so, why?
(3) I don’t understand why a parent should ever reject a child because of embarrassment. This is a bit like killing your cat because she’s ugly, or divorcing your husband because his face gets disfigured.

A sinner is a sinner, but some sins will get you punished more than others. Yes, because I wouldn’t want to be related to such a low-class, idiot. Would probably think my sperm was defective, or that it was up to fate.

Regarding (3), say your child killed 3 people (your son, not mine, I won’t be having kids – I am not dating → marriage → sex material). He’s still your son? No. You have the right to draw a line somewhere.

Yes, I believe that sodomy is on that list, as well as pride.

Theology 101: Sins are not based on heredity. The healthiest raw materials can make for the worst sinner imaginable.

God the Father doesn’t disinherit us, nor does he disinherit murderers. Are we better fathers than God?

God bless you, Prodigal_Son, for engaging with this poster so charitably. I mean that sincerely. 👍 I have a suspicion he is not genuine, and just trying to cause trouble, but that doesn’t mean your reply won’t be helpful to someone else who reads this thread.

Gee, thanks. 😊

Thank you for all the prayers and replies. It has been a storm for me. I am very angry at my son now. He admitted to me that he was having sex with his boyfriend. I told him the Church teaching and even the pope said if he was to do such a thing he should wear a codom. I am now afraid he will get an std or even worse. Please keep praying. I feel like my family is falling apart.
Your son sounds like a typical young adult.

Actually a lot of people think stuff like that, even you have it wrong, it was about male prostitutes, not gay people. Sure there is overlap between the former and the latter, but there’s a lot of overlap between rapists and heterosexual men so maybe you shouldn’t be throwing stones.

:doh2:

And Catholics wonder why a lot of LGBT people think that a lot of Catholics are jerks, maybe it has to do with equating gay sex and murder.

Sadly, I would have to agree with you. A lot of LGBT people think of Christians (Catholics and otherwise) as jerks and there are some Christians who by their words and actions prove the LGBT folks right not only by being jerks, but also by being self-righteous jerks.
