I think Martin Scorcese is Catholic. There are a ton of Catholic references in almost all of his movies.

Wasn’t it Scorcese the director of the movie “The Last Temptation of Christ”. I think he is one of those Hollywood Catholics that are Catholic in name only

Not only did Scorsese direct the film, the book on which the film is based is by the Greek author Nikos Kazanzakis, who was a devout Catholic. Both book and film are thought-provoking in a ‘what if…?’ kind of way. I enjoyed them and did not find them disrespectful or harmful to my faith.

Thank goodness the movie was so tedius and boring because it contradicts the faith in a LOT of ways–less people were therby hurt in their faith. I really sort of doubt a “devoutness” that posists so many “what ifs” Scocese, along with comedian George Carlin and Penthouse publisher (pornographer) Bob Guccione were interviewed in the book Once a Catholic–wich was explicitly about secular minded ex-catholics

:nope: That movie is not very Catholic. 😦 Mel Gibson said that he read the script because they offered him the part of “Jesus” and he said he didn’t want it because it wasn’t true to the Gospel.

Scorcese flunked out of the Seminary and judging on how he uses his Catholcism in his movies its easy to understand why. He has a great gift of catholic iconography and uses catholic imagery well in his films however he inevitably has to get a cheap shot in on the catholic church as his way of getting back at the church for whatever he has against the church. The Godfather III takes cheap shots at the church along with some conspiracy theories that are plain looney. Even in his last film which was great though violent the Jack Nicolson Character insults the clergy with cheao shots insluting two priests and a nun about the church pedophile scandla and that they all practice such devious practices and he the drug dealer is more holy than they are. Whatever. There is defective catholicism in many of his movies his imagery is more powerful for it but his later films have him taking far more cheap shots at the church.

Godfather was directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

And in The Departed, probably the most righteous of the characters was depicted as a devout Catholic (Martin Sheen as the chief or whatever).

But yeah, there were some cheap shots.

Oops your right Capolla has his own anti-catholic issues as he has dropped the religion entirely and has some of the same strenght and weakness as Scorcesse and both have made use of beautiful and powerful catholic imagery but make no reservation taking cheap shots at the church. Both filmakers catholcism make them better filmakers but their cheapshots never fail to irk me and detracts from their overall brilliance. The Departed like the Godfather series was brutal and graphic but a great piece of cinema with great catholic imagery along with the cheap shots at the church. Its funny you don’t seem to have ex-protestants working out their crisied of faith on the big screen as it seems with the non-practicing catholic filmmakers.

Bill O’reilly, who can be viewed weekly at St. Brigid’s.
I hardly think Bill O Reilly woudl qualify in the candidate as a Hollywood Catholic. A FoxNews catholic like Sean Hannity and Neil Cavuto both ex-seminarian yeah he;s in that crowd but unlike the later Bill was not a Seminarian but was a schoolteacher in a public school.

Hanity was an ex seminarian?

Alan Combs surely was not though.

I catch these guys on the news channels from time to time and I had no idea they were Catholic.

It’s because Catholicism has a lot more to work with. 2000+ years of beautiful architecture and rituals. I mean come on, the baptism scene is The Godfather would not be one of the best scenes in cinema if it were at a southern baptist church with everyone hootin’ and hollerin’ while someone was fully immersed (although i suppose Michael’s baby wouldn’t even have been baptized if that’s the case!).

Godfather I and II (2 of my favorite movies) didn’t seem outwardly anti-catholic to me. Only in the sense that all of the characters were Catholic yet were doing some mighty un-Catholic things. But that’s just how the mafia was and I didn’t get offended (never saw III). I WAS offended though when Nicholson talks to the priests/nun at the restaurante in The Departed, though. As that was a blatant cheap shot. Still didn’t keep me from thinking it was the best movie this year though. Terrific film.

 He was openly gay but I don’t know if practicing the lifestyle.
Nancie Lew:
Paris Hilton
 I would’ve never guessed. She is not very “Catholic” material. She is in name only I’m sure. ??
Nancie Lew:
Another shocker! I mean I knew she was Catholic but I also know that her actions sure aren’t. Especially after that stunt she pulled at one of her concerts. Well at all of her concerts she acts very risqué. But the one with her hanging on that cross was definitely a lash out at Jesus. I never saw it but I’ve heard a lot about it. Madonna is not one that I like at all for her music and her actions on stage.

She seems to dress better when not performing now and her books seem to be okay for kids, but not sure completely because I’ve only seen her on Oprah with her book for a short time… or was it another talk show? I can’t remember now.

Agree with movie reviews but Godfather III was blatantly anti-catholic the whole the Vatican does money laundering with the mafia and had John Paul I killed was a little to obvious that Vapollla has come to a crisis of faith and trying to work that our our lash it out on the celluliod. It has some good moments but becasue of this and some other weaknesses is not the masterpieced GF I and II were. I thought the Departed was a brilliant film but coudl have doen without the obvious cheapshot which had nothing to do with the overall movie it could have been deleted and you probably have a better movie.

Liberace won a libel suit against a newspaper report which implied he was homosexual.

Madonna was brought up Catholic, then became a practical atheist, and now claims to be a Jewess.

Correct Liberace never openly lived a gay lifestyle as this would upset his devout Catholic mom heck he used to date women just to please her. There is little doubt he practiced this lifestyle behind closed doors but he never openly flaunted or promoted the lifestyle he was as they say in the closet and always remained there.

Madonna is Jewish in the mystical tradition of Kaballa some would say cultish tradition. But you can’t be both a Jew and a Catholic so she has dropped all claims to being caholic better for the religions sake but of course bad for her soul.

I’ve read some bios of Liberace demonstrating that he was incredibly generous with his great wealth. He helped a lot of people and charities. And who knows how much money he gave to the Church? I know one of the greatest moments in his life was his audience with the Pope. (I have an album–yes, an old LP!–where he actually mentions this event in his life.)

I’m glad that GOD decides who goes to heaven! It seems to me that Liberace obeyed Jesus’s commands to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, etc., and therefore, Jesus will know him in heaven. I know that the Bible teaches that homosexuality is an abomination, but Jesus didn’t have much to say about this. We don’t know what sins Liberace confessed to his priest; perhaps week after week he confessed homosexual sin and was truly sorry for his inability to stop. Or perhaps he was homosexual but lived chastely. We don’t know. God knows, and I personally hope that Liberace will be in heaven playing that most gorgeous piano in the universe!
