Horowitz: Philippines had the harshest lockdown and most mask wearing. It didn’t work

No,my logic is to allow those who want to work and go to school the opportunity to do so.At 67 while I’m consider higher risk due to my age,I’m healthy and active and like many elderly who have contracted this virus,I ,ay only be mildly affected. I wear a mask when out, social distance and follow all the other suggested protocols. Fortunately,I don’t have to work nor does my husband but so many young families are suffering in many ways due to the inability to make a living.I might add, those like my oldest daughter ,a nurse practionor and a type 1 diabetic, to boot has been working because she has no choice,it’s her profession. If she who is at higher risk can work why is it those who have no underlying issues are not allowed to?

Uhh no she has to work. She is a single mother and has financial obligations, she cannot afford to not work.Which is the case for the majority of citizens being foreced out of jobs

I’m fine with e learning for students ,just so long as I and everyone else gets a tax break too

The Lancet recently published a study that “running its course” would cause the overwhelming of the hospital systems and massive amount of deaths. . .

. . . That’s the science.
Ok. But where is the “science” that masking up will negate this?

Especially since “masking up” DIDN’T negate this in the Philippines?
And not masking up in Sweden is not over running their hospitals.

Or where is the “science” of the risk-benefit ratio of a Government FORCING so many to stay home?
(Where is the science of “common sense”?)

It seems to me,
dying of starvation
but side-stepping a viral infection
is a Pyrrhic Victory.

(“I am on my last breath dying of starvation.
But at least I never got a corona virus infection that 99+% of the people survive anyway!”)

.

From Google . . . .
A Pyrrhic victory (/ˈpɪrɪk/ ( listen) PIRR-ik) is a victory that inflicts such a devastating toll on the victor that it is tantamount to defeat. Winning a Pyrrhic victory takes a heavy toll that negates any true sense of achievement or damages long-term progress.

E learning is an entirely different entity. My youngest daughter was told by my grandsons principle that those who choose online learning will be instructed by an entirely different teacher, not affiliated with the school.Operating cost would be significantly less

Well regardless of the reasons for this,it still stands that the costs would be significantly less

If you truly wish to make it about masks go ahead. There is no issue about masks where I live. There may be many others but not that one .

Administering is kind of the basic purpose of the “ Administration” precisely 🙂 .
What is normally meant in this case of Covid is administering the flow of people and movement . What is normally understood by restricting the flow to essentials and so on.
Reality is that Health Department is keeping a very close eye on the availability of ICU beds. It has been kind of centralized in terms of number of beds and sharing resources public and private in this emergency.
And it is the gatherings ( many people together no social distance , etc ) what is causing numbers of people requiring attention to increase.
I don’t know if it is the same in the Philippines honestly.

This is my understanding as well. It might work but nothing yet conclusive

Reality is many of the ICU beds are wide open.

Reality is a man I personally know in NE U.S. was integrally involved in a make-shift field hospital to take overflow patients that never occurred.

It was a proverbial Maytag Repairman situation where they sat around for hours daily getting paid to watch Government health video streams for hours each day.

Admitedly that is not the case in the Philippines.
But you’ve missed the point.

The point is for all the draconian measures, the Philippines has not been able to stem the tide.

And for all the lack, maskless mandate Sweden is still a model country according to the WHO.

And none of these “draconian measures” forced masks, stay home orders, threatening your own citizens with being shot, etc. are scientifically proven to help anything.

More Government or “administration” is not going to be our deliverer.

That being said . . .

I think masks can be helpful in certain situations but it is unproven. Especially the way the world is using them.

I think staying home can be helpful too for SOME self-selected individuals. But nobody knows the risk-benefit ratios of this.

(Maybe with all these measures you get a ten percent reduction in viral cases and a twenty percent increase in other problems like starvation, suicide, drug abuse, etc.).

Nobody knows.

Nobody.

There are studies showing the efficicy of mask wearing, it has a proven effect in helping limit viral spread.

If the country were given proper guidance, not only by Trump, but by the governors and mayors, we might have had this under control by now. And by guidance, I mean shelter-in-place, a mandate to wear masks, social distancing, and continuous hand-washing. Unfortunately, we did not have that kind of leadership. But I blame not only the leadership but the obstinacy of the American people who are so afraid their freedom is being limited. Yes, we might have suffered a few months the most and been able to re-open the economy safely by now. But no: our precious freedom has cost more lives, surges now in the South and the Midwest, and needless suffering.

To me, this is not a partisan issue; it is a matter of a little sacrifice needed to get society moving again as soon as possible. Now we are suffering the consequences of our stubbornness and stupidity.

I don’t understand why masks are controversial to some, I honestly don’t …

Would you mind linking to these studies umamibella?

Thanks in advance.

One month after statewide mask mandate, California’s daily COVID case average has increased by 162%

Daniel Payne July 18, 2020

The governor has also ordered that reopened schools must implement masks as well.

One month after California Gov. Gavin Newsom unilaterally ordered state residents to wear masks in most public settings, the average daily number of coronavirus cases in the state has increased by over 160%.

Newsom’s June 18 order “mandate[d] that face coverings be worn state-wide” while in “any indoor public space,” while on public transit, during virtually every form of work in which the public might be involved in some way, while walking through “hallways, stairways, elevators, and parking facilities,” while in “any room or enclosed area where other people (except for members of the person’s own household or residence) are present when unable to physically distance,” and in outdoor settings where six feet of distance between individuals is not possible.

Every state resident older than two years old is bound by the mandate; a small number of exceptions exempt individuals due to medical conditions and other limited circumstances.

In spite of those strict directives, cases have continued to rise in the state, continuing an upward trend that was already in full swing when the mask mandate went into effect.

The website of Johns Hopkins University, which offers pandemic tracking tools for every U.S. state, says average daily cases in California have increased from 3,385 on the day of Newsom’s order to 8,889 as of July 16, an increase of 162%.

Though Newsom’s mask mandate appears to have had little effect on the trajectory of the virus in California, the governor nevertheless this week imposed additional mask requirements on the state, ordering that most students who return to school in the fall will be subject to “strong mask requirements,” namely that "all staff and students in 3rd grade and above will be required to wear a mask . . .

Yes I do mind, web wombat it and learn the science of what works. The evidence is common.
Go to science and not news media articles bent on reinforcing the political kidnapping of a global pandemic

Good night what an inappropriate response!

To the readers here.

The fact is there is no science yet on this as far as societal mask-wearing goes.

Not only have I looked, but I have asked others here repeatedly for this “evidence” too.

There is none. At least regarding the conditions in society that I have repeatedly outlined here on CAF.

Why don’t you provide me with some of the science here right now Thbolt? I would be good with that.
