Now you want to try them for truancy? ‘Wow’ would be a gross understatement.

Perhaps you should spend a little more time trying to change the immigration laws in the UK and a little less worrying about America’s. When my son lived in London he found that your laws were very restrictive about what type of work he could and could not do. According to him there was a large illegal worker population, mostly Eastern European, Indian sub continent and Arabic, in London.

If these kids were out there protesting abortion during school hours I dont think yall would have a problem with it, but because they are protesting something yall want to happen they are bad little delinquents.
No, I still would be ticked off they were skipping school.

Why do you keep referring to them as “brown”? This sounds very racist. I"m sure there are other ehtnic groups and even whites who are in the “illegal immigrant” category.
I’m pretty sure he is being sarcastic.

I thought that sentence was about arresting children for truancy. Oh well.

Yes, they are overly restrictive in many circumstances.

Yes, the problem is mainly centred on London, and in specific areas - the restaurant trade, and building work, most notably. I already said there were specific sectors that did have a problem.

Why? because they are hispanic students? that comment doesnt make sense!

I doubt that it will be a first offense for many of them!

TarAshly and others,

We are talking about immigration reform. If you are for illegal immigration just say so.
Actually the orignal topic was about kids protesting and their right to do so and the punishement that comes with it when you skip school. i believe there is another thread about the pros and cons of the actually reform.

Here in Houston The school districts have taken the line of okay you had your day to speak your voice and will be punished like normal with detentions and such but if you do it again you will be suspension or expelled. I agree with them. The students spoke out and protested. The had that right BUT If they continue then they should be punished because it would seem that they are not protesting in support of anything but to simple get out of school.

Same here, this problem did not happen in one day and it will take years to find the solution. The kids need to graduate high school.

It has nothing to do with that. Statistacly speaking, in a crowd that size, there are sure to be some who habitualy skip school for whatever reasons. Also, as I said before, I’m sure that the crowd was mixed to at least some extent and not just Mexican. Why do you think that only Mexicans or “brown people” were protesting. I would say that you are the one showing racist thinking, not I.

Has anyone here read the Holy Fathers encyclical? If so, have you read it in the context of the current debate on this thread? I have found his words on social justice to give me cause to really contemplate my position on this. I haven’t necessarily changed my position. I just think that we should all listen to him and make sure that we consider what he has said before we decide we know what is Gods will on this.

I am half way through the encyclical. I still think my country has a right to have laws about immigration. I do believe we can help anyone in need, but that does not necessarily mean to give someone citizenship. What about Mexico’s responsibility to help their own citizens in need of work ?

I am puzzled at the anger directed as the US and the abscence of anger at the government of Mexico. Seems terribly one-sided to me.

I think they don’t have the anger because we have provided them an outlet. I heard in one report that our loose borders have prevented a Mexican revolution.
