Even if you talk about the Iran, without some nuance about the great divide between Sunnis and Shias would at least be in order, not to mention the West’s role in interventions in Iran, particularly in WWII and in the 1950s when an American-backed coup reinstalled the Shah. I certainly would never defend the Islamic Republic; whether you ended up in a prison or worse because the Shah’s secret police yanked you out of your home in the middle of the night, of after 1979 it was the Ayatollah’s, Iran is a country of great potential that’s been run by ruthless men for a long time. The Shah was good because he was pro western , so his many sins are still ignored to this day.I guess thinking back on it in view of the Ayahtollah and the Iran hostage crisis, perhaps my teachers thought it was best to speed through the issue to avoid any sort of unpleasantness, even though in those days there weren’t many Muslims (apart from Nation of Islam) in USA and they weren’t very visible.
