So you were born again twice?
More than twice, in fact—I am born again every time I go to Confession, since the sins which drew me away from God are forgiven.
I have only had Original Sin washed away once; that is what baptism does.
The mortal and venial sins freely chosen, however, must be washed away before receiving again the blessed sacrament of the Eucharist. It is the hunger for the Eucharist, for the flesh and blood of the risen Lord, which impels me and so many others to repent, to ask forgiveness, to complete acts of contrition, and to strive to obey Christ’s command to “go and sin no more.”
For if St Peter, foremost of the Apostles, turned away from God in sin and needed to repent, who am I to possess such unmerited pride as to claim I am no sinner, and need no repentance? I will not compound my sins by adding making a liar out of God to the mix!
By God’s grace, one day I hope that through faith and the sacraments I will find myself sinless and pure before His throne, and hear those words we all so long to hear, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant, well done!”
Until then, I will need to be born anew with each Confession.
