How far is too far for dressing?

I’m not really a modesty icon among the religious, although I guess among my secular friends I am. I don’t really care much for it because if I try to adhere to some of the modesty guidelines on CAF, I would look like a oversized toddler.

My own guidelines are
-no cleavage (which is not that hard, since I don’t have much to show)
-no midriff (I don’t swim or go to the beach, but a little wouldn’t be the end of the world.)
-no short skirts, I.e. Skirts that are midthigh, few inches above the knee is fine. Short shorts are fine if I’m exercising or just heading to the shops nearby.
-no see through stuff unless I’m wearing a camisole underneath.
-skinny jeans/tight fitting clothes are fine as long as they are not suffocating me, because that would be uncomfortable and eye catching

That’s my ‘modesty guidelines’. There’s more stuff I wouldn’t wear but it’s more to do with them looking bad on me.

I think she said women wearing pants are trying to be like, or compete with men.
And she knows this how?

As for my own modesty standards, I borrow from the Vatican dress code.
Even the Vatican does not ban slacks on women.

I think she was the one that said women wearing pants cause men to look at their crotch. I’m not too sure about whether it was her or someone with a similar book but yikes.

Well women wearing skirts can tempt some men to do some upskirting photography.

Maybe if it’s best if women just don’t go out into the public sphere.

I won’t be surprised if there are some who already suggest this.

Well like the others said a lot depends on culture and how you where you are. But that being said the common sense part of it is a bit of bind, cos some people dont have that and I don’t mean that horribly but not everyone is brought up in a nice Catholic or Christian or even a moral house hold, which is where the presumption of ‘common sense’ breaks down. Also one persons idea of common sense and another’s differ…clearly demonstrated by society in general. These days our society thinks a lot of strange things are common sense, especially things that are strange to a Catholic (like taking birth control) so it’s not wise to watch or take advice from them, our posters here mean develop your own common sense or learn from the church and modest people. Remember your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit and treat it as such. If you are feeling uncomfortable or like you are exposing too much skin then you probably are, that’s the Holy Spirit warning you. You can wear nice clothes without shaming your body. There are plenty of woman Catholic bloggers who are fashionistas and will give you ideas on good modest clothing to wear that is fashionable too. Also a lot of vintage clothing is in fashion. It is better to know the reasons for modesty and discern yourself than to follow a shopping list of rules like no shorts shorter than x or y etc. those sorts of rules may lead to scrupulous thoughts and/or getting fed up with the whole thing. Rather seek the grace of modesty and learn about it and use prudence . God bless you.

That could be a terrible standard. In 2019, a lot of grandmas will have been born in the 1960s… and raised in the 70s and 80s… I wouldn’t trust the fashion sense of the modern grandma per se :P.

It’s no longer safe to assume that “grandmas” are more conservative than young people.

I hate when people sneak the chopped up yucky turkey parts into the dressing, and don’t tell me.

Cornbread dressing with some Italian sweet and spicy sausage is delicious 😋.

Since most guys are heterosexual, simply being female is a source of temptation.

This is why we have the burqa, designed to make women indistinguishable from the corner mailbox.

Our Lady revealed to the little ten-year-old Jacinta: “Certain fashions will be introduced which will offend Our Divine Lord very much. Those who serve God ought not to follow these fashions. The Church has no fashions. Our Lord is always the same.”

Pope Benedict XV spoke out strongly against immodest fashions: “One cannot sufficiently deplore the blindness of so many women of every age and station. Made foolish by a desire to please, they do not see to what degree the indecency of their clothing shocks every honest man and offends God. Most of them would formerly have blushed for such apparel as for a grave fault against Christian modesty.”

For those who think that women need to dress like beekeepers to avoid tempting them, you do realize that there’s nothing wrong with seeing someone in public and feeling attracted, right? As in, you’re allowed to think someone is good looking.

If I wear a loose shirt I’m sloppy. If I wear a tailored one without serious alterations I am an occasion of sin. Can’t win.

Fashion meaning trends of thinking or world views like Nihilism and Materialism.

It does not necessarily mean fashion in the contemporary sense which is often meant to be sartorial fashion.

Did Our Lady talk in Portuguese? We have to account for the lost in translation effect.

Two things: the fashion here is not the fashion we’re discussing. The quote has nothing to do with clothing. And secondly, it’s private revelation, which is not binding on anyone except Jacinta.
