How much has watching EWTN influenced your Catholic point of view?

I prefer her to Scott Hahn. She’s coming at it from a cradle Catholic perspective. Hahn and Akin seem to be coming at a lot of things from the perspective of apologetics to convert non-Catholics. A lot of the topics they address are things that either seem super-obvious to me, or else are things that don’t interest me because I never heard of them, never thought about them, and don’t find them an issue.

Is Pope Francis featured much on EWTN? I would label him progressive, though some don’t like labels I think it important to differentiate approaches.
I see Pope Francis live quite a bit. I’ve also watched old episodes that they air of a show he taped before he was Pope. It is in Spanish, but they translate.

I find EWTN’s label and style to be … Catholiic. As long as it is faithful to the CCC and the magisterium, they air it.

The ordinary Catholic doesn’t care about either of these issues enough to get excited over them, with the exception of those persons who are personally impacted by being gay or having a gay family member/ close friend.
I think there is much concern about the current crisis among ordinary Catholics and certainly young men and the parents of young men who are discerning a vocation to the priesthood would be concerned.

Back in the early 90’s before I became Catholic I watched a good amount of EWTN.

Over the years I’ve watched less and less, the 2016 Election is where, for me, they jumped the shark. Now I watch CatholicTV and Formed.org.

Both are available online or through streaming devices like Roku, FireTV, AppleTV, etc.

I do like EWTN Radio more than I like their TV programming. I especially like Catholic Answers Live (naturally).

Well, we’re not exactly chockablock with young men discerning priesthood vocations these days, sadly, so you’re talking about a tiny percent.

My only complaint is sometimes the commentators just keep talking over stuff going on and I don’t really need or want to hear them unless perhaps they are translating a Pope speech into English for us.
This is why I find it hard to watch the Papal masses or other Pope or Vatican related events. The commentators talk non-stop even when they aren’t translating. I prefer the non-filtered masses from the EWTN chapel.

That reminds me what Scott Hahn good naturedly related about a time he was on with Mother Angelica when Hahn was going on (his words) about the relationship between the OT and NT.

Mother: you remind me of a current day St Paul.
Hahn: Wow!
Mother: there’s lots of things he wrote I still don’t understand.

I find Hahn’s books much more palatable than his discussions on EWTN or elsewhere. That kind of in depth biblical analysis is much easier to follow in writing.

She is missed that’s for sure. She was a warrior against the liberals.

I don’t think the future Cardinal had any idea what was coming lol.

Thankfully there are some in the Church that have taken up her mantle in the battle against liberalism

Powerful words, and she meant every last one of them.

I’m glad I missed the 70s and 80s. I’m very thankful that I am coming up after Pope St. JPII corrected a few things…

I appreciate EWTN realizing that politics is a part of spiritual warfare and they reflect that in shows like The World Over, Pro Life Weekly and Catholic Connection which features Fr. Frank Pavone a lot.

I guess it doesn’t bother me because they are explaining everything and since it’s pretty new to me, I really appreciate it.

I like EWTN generally, but I also understand what you mean by the “conservative” style.

Now I watch CatholicTV
I checked it out a couple of times and not much there but the last time I watched it was a show that had Fr. Gerald Murray on who is a guest of Raymond Arroyo a lot on EWTN so I might give it another shot.

The politics is not an issue for me. I watch and listen to a broad swatch of media from very conservative to very liberal. I take issue with snipes at Pope Francis on Catholic programming. I expect that from non-Catholic programming, but not from networks like EWTN.

I used to watch.

I haven’t watched in a long time.

I tried to get back into it, but I’m not fond of “papal posses”.

My local diocese reruns Fulton Sheen on their station. I like to watch him when I have a chance.
