How to motivate my husband to work?

Ana,
leaving him would be pretty drastic. It doesn’t sound like you’re at that stage. Hopefully, things will improve.
Someone who is unemployed is generally recommended to treat the job search as a job. In other words, get up at 8 AM, work on finding a job from 9 to 5, and relax in the evenings. You might consider requesting that he do that. He might be depressed, but surely realizes that he has to carry his weight. It is hard to find a job right now, but not impossible. He can be contacting friends, acquaintances, networking etc in search of any kind of work. He has no business sitting in front of the TV all day.
You can cut the TV cord and put a device on it that will allow you to plug it in at night if you want to. I have heard of people doing that with their teenagers. A place like Radioshack would be able to tell you how to do it. I would recommend discussing with him what you need him to do, and cutting off the TV during the day unless he gets up and starts doing it, 9 AM to 5 PM.
If he refuses, you could ask him to leave. It’s not right for an adult to support another able-bodied adult who won’t try to help himself.

Sounds like the best idea so far was so use the counseling services at your school OP, at least you will have a safety valve to help cope with the stress. How old are the 3 kids at home (not counting DH!).

I need advice. My husband seems perfectly content to watch tv all day, eat and sleep and not much else. He used to work, I know it’s “possible” but for most of this year, he was mostly on “vacation”.

I’m starting to go a little insane with this. I’m trying to be as patient as possible, but we are doing horribly financially, and it’s getting worse by the minute. I am trying to finish school (almost done) and I just can’t bear the thought of dropping out to work at a minimum wage job right now (because I have pretty much no job experience) while he could be making 25+ dollars an hour in his line of work—if he would just work!!

How do I motivate him? I know, prayer, and believe me I’ve done that, but besides prayer, what would YOU do if you were in this situation? HELP!
A solution, the temporary refusal of the request of the marital act, a simple delay of few days for boosting his motivation in his research of a job!!! What do you think of it?

NO WAY! Why would I punish myself like that? That’s the best thing we have going. Anyway, I’m the one that that keeps asking for it all the time, so he would probably enjoy a break. LOL

Anyway, that almost sounds like prostitution or something!

I would LOVE for that to happen, but we are BROKE, so counseling is not an option.

Getting counseling from a priest is not an option either. (that’s another story)

You see, the way everything is set up now, if you don’t have a job, you don’t have insurance, and we can’t afford out-of-pocket anything. (hopefully we will soon have healthcare thanks to Obama) but not right now.

I’m tempted to drop out of school to work, but that will only fix short term problems. (if it even fixes them at all-- I doubt i could make above minimum wage)
Catholic Charities has been suggested to you on the other thread. They have LSWs who work on a sliding income scale. No income, no charge (others who can pay make up for you). Go for yourself, if he will not go with you.

I wish I had a magic solution for you, “Do this and this and this, and your husband will wake up, get a job and treat you like his beloved.” Unfortunately, I think there are deeper problems and there is no magic solution. Seeing a counselor will help you understand just what you are dealing with and that will help you make some decisions.

I said to refuse the request of marital act coming from him, I did not say the refusal of the request of marital act coming from you (the wife). The subtility is here. Do you understand the diffrence. My solution was only for a general theory.

In your situation, if your husband asks sometimes i understand very well your reaction to my solution and I am okay with your point of view. If your husband was happy for a break, you would need to know why he is like that. The sexual harmony, I mean the reciprocal and mutual request of marital act should be the principle, the normal rule, it is an natural moral objective in the couple.

I had to laugh at this because that’s something I don’t get either - if you’re mad at your husband, why would *you *deny yourself something enjoyable? Maybe you should just burn his dinner for a week instead! 👍

(just kidding - I wouldn’t recommend petty punishments like that)

In seriousness OP, another solution I thought of is that maybe you could take a little extra time yourself (I know it would be an additional burden on you, but perhaps it could be offered as a small sacrifice) to search the want ads in your local paper for some jobs that your husband might be good at. If you think he would be too proud to take some nudging directly from you, you could always just leave a paper resting on the table where he would see it (open to the specific jobs page) and see if he takes interest himself to call. I imagine he would probably see through the ruse, but at least it would be a way of pushing him without having to do so verbally/face-to-face. You could circle the specific jobs ahead of time, and if he asks you about it, just tell him you came across them and immediately thought they would be something he’d be good at.

In the mean time, is your husband particularly handy at anything - carpentry, tiling, yard work? Can he offer services by way of an advertisement in the paper or the church bulletin?

Like catholic lay person, I am against the marriage for wrong reasons and thus against the conjugal sex for wrong reasons.

The marital act is for following intentions:

Only, the bonding of love;
Only, the will to make of baby;
Only, the fact of remedium concupiscentiae;

No hierarchy between them, all of them are fine, not sinful per se.

or

The bonding of love and the the will to make of baby;

Some corrections, sorry for my error of orthographies.

I don’t understand how this applies to anything. (sorry)

yeah, I don’t believe in withholding sex as a punishment or to get the other person to do something. I think that is morally wrong.

The Bible says do not deprive one another except with MUTUAL CONSENT.

There has to be GRAVE moral reasons to deny the other spouse, or some serious reason (being sick for example).

In catholic mora,l there are two systems for abstinence of marital act:

A.The bilateral agreement between spouses, the mutual and reciprocal will of each spouse not to practice conjugal sex:
  1. during a temporary time for spiritual and religious reasons, in knowing that at each time (at each second) the agreement can be stopped by the will of only one or by both of them. The break of this temporary time without sex is not immoral and is not a bad event for the couple, it is not sinful.
  2. during the time where there is a presumption of fertility of wife for serious reason (grave), objective, real and fair in order to avoid a baby (to delay and to postpone the arrival of an other child) or for the spacing the pregnancies.
B. The unilateral will from one of member of couple:
  1. if and only if there is a serious motive, thus the refusal of the request of marital act from wife or from husband is permitted; The fact of not wanting to search a job, without serious reasons, can be a valid cause???
  2. For the wife during pregnancy if and only if there are realistic medical issues or if the wife is tired by the pregnancy. Per se, the pregnancy is not a reasonnable reason.
  3. For wife between 2 weeks until 6 weeks after childbirth.
  4. For wife during the menstruations if and only if she is tired because per se, menstruations are not resaonnable causes.
5.If there is an adultery, but after the forgiveness, the marital sex is the rule, the refusal is not morally licit.
  1. If the request of marital act is too often in the short time (the moderation): but no number and no quantity, per se, can be given like example.
  2. If one of member is drunk or has lost temporary the reason.
Each time, the reasons have to be reasonable, real, objective, fair and serious. Why a reason? Because the marital act is the rule of the marriage.

Ana, who does the budgeting and pays the bills? (I don’t mean provides the money to pay the bills, but actually completes the transactions with the service providers) . If he is not currently doing that, I would strongly suggest asking him to “manage” the finances, by which I mean realistically look at revenue and expenses, and try find a workable budget for you guys.

If he is not currently doing this, it is possible that he does not realize how “dire” the situation is, and how you are already having trouble making ends meet, and that the current course of action is not sustainable even in the short term.

Being “in charge” of figuring out a budget may help him to take ownership of the situation as well as be a wake-up call. Currently, he may not see how bad things have become and may just be assuming that this is little bit of debt justified by an extended vacation. Give him the math to do, and let him come to the conclusion on his own that his income is not optional if the family is going to survive. It sounds like he could use to listen to David Ramsey’s programming…or better yet, Gail Vax Oxlade…

If this doesn’t work, there may be a deeper root to the problem, and counseling may necessary.

Best wishes.

As another posted said, is he depressed? This can come in different strengths, people don’t have to want to kill themselves or cry all day to be clinically depressed. It can be lack of energy, low self worth, loss if interest in activities, etc. You can actually look up a simple online checklist about depression and run through it making guesses as to what your husbands answers would be (they are like on a scale of 1-10 or something for each question).

Another suggestion, something that can be very difficult as most people don’t seem to be made this way, is to do something called ‘praise the positive’.

It helps modify people’s behavior. I have used it successfully to get a woman who used to literally SCREAM almost constantly to get attention as if she were in an emergency when she just wanted to ask someone a routine question, etc. What we did was to ‘ignore’ her while she was screaming, and then as soon as she stopped, give her ample ammt’s of praise for gaining control over herself and seaking in a calm tone of voice.

That might sound crazy or not make sense, but it was effective in getting a women who used to drive everyone she came in contact with CRAZY to being someone who learned to express herself without screaming. And she was doing this her whole life and was a sr citizen before we started doing this to help her.

So my suggestion is that you, rather than nag or criticize (not saying your doing this) is to look for opportunities, even very small ones, where he does something work related and positive and give him special attention and praise for doing so. Don’t do it in such a way so that it will make you look/seem crazy to him, but if he doesn’t normally put his socks in the hamper, and one day he does…make a point of thanking him and telling him how much you love him and appreciate it when he does things that help around the house. Same with dishes, helping with the children, running an errand, anything and everything that has to do with his own self-care, his care for you and your family, etc.

Everyone likes praise, it makes us feel good. And when praised we are more likely to do again that which we received praise for. It might sound like your being told to treat him like a little kid. You are.

But, assuming he is not invested in getting a job for whatever reason (finding out what that/those reasons are and working on them with him would/could be a much quicker solution) if you get into the pattern of nagging him (which is perfectly understandable) the effects all too often is to have the person dig in their heels and be less likely to do what you want them to do.

Couples counseling, if he is agreeable, would also possibly be a good idea. And it might sound silly or even make you angry to be told to treat him with kid gloves when he is a man. But the reality is that he is NOT behaving like a man/husband the way most good husbands do. And without knowing why, it’s best to not make things worse. Arguments will make things worse.

You can try talking to him to find out what is going on, etc… but men have a funny way of hiding their feelings and being open about their weaknesses. He may benefit from some type of medical care as well as counseling, but he has to be willing.

Eventually you might have to put your foot down and give him an ultimatum but I suggest you work with him cooperatively, from where he is at at the present time, as a unit to try and effect change for the better.

It’s easy to say ‘just tell him it’s his responsibility to get a job and bla bla’ but if it were so easy to change other people this way everyone would be changing and living much more responsibly.

I didn’t read any of the other posts giving you advice. But I speak from my own experience as someone with depression (as well as ptsd) and there are days when I am litterally sooo exhasusted just being alive, its symptoms of depression. I would love to be able to work 80 hrs/week to better my families financial circumstances but the reality is that I am lucky to be able to work 40 because of my particular history despite being in treatment, etc. And I desire to be different and work at it, but when my wife nags me it makes the situation worse for me, not better.

Having her support and understanding of my illness and helps me a lot, when she gets impatient and starts arguments with me it makes things worse for me, and us.

God Bless,
Bill

No, I don’t see the difference. I think refusing your spouse without grave reasons is immoral.

Why would he be happy for a break? HAHA, probably to let his muscles heal?

Bill,

Thank you,

Yours has been the best advice of all.

peace
Feel free to pm me with any questions or concerns, etc. I work in the mental health field and have for the past 20 years. The 25 prior to that I was raised in an abusive and neglectful home and know exactly what the root causes are, for me at least, not being able to live up to the expectations of my wife, as well as my own expectations. And I work hard at it. Perhaps if I knew a little more about your husband/yourself/ etc I might be able to be more helpful. At a minumum, it would be my pleasure to try and be of assistance.

God Bless,
Bill

I is difficult to understand his problem unless he is willing to open up to someone. All we could do is make guesses which may be more wrong than right. We really don’t know what is at the root of his problem. He needs to open up to someone who is a positive person.

Try to find someone who he will talk to so they can help him to deal with his problem. He must be miserable on the inside and needs help.

I wish I had something to offer you that would be an easy solution. But unless he talks about his problem to someone else, it would only be hit or miss.

You haven’t mentioned about his knowledge or love of Jesus. If his day consists of TV, it probably can’t be good. This is why I would suggest that you get him the miraculous medal to wear or the green scapular of Mary or both.

Have the green scapular blessed and then he can put it in his wallet.
Buy a stainless steel chain and put a miraculous medal on it for him to wear after it is blessed.

Mary said of the Green Scapular, for those who keep in on them,
… Conversion of those who do not have the faith
… Reconciliation to the Church for those who have lost/strayed from the faith
… Assurance of a happy death
… Strengthening of the faith for those already in the Church
… Protection from Satan

Mary said of the miraculous medal, for those who wear it,
“Have a medal struck… All who wear it will receive GREAT graces; they should wear it
around the neck. GRACES will ABOUND for persons who wear it with CONFIDENCE.”

Mary is the queen of heaven and earth and is near her son in heaven. She may obtain great graces if we ask her to, especially if we use her gifts as she requested. She gave them to us to use because she wants to help. She will stand by you.

Mother Teresa was a great believer in the miraculous medal.

Pray each day “Immaculate Heart of Mary pray for us now and at the hour of our death.”

She went thru so much sorrow, she understands, go to her.

A few thoughts.

well, I already know what he watches, and it’s nothing bad. (every time i sneak in there to see what he is watching it is the news or the channel with the guys who are trying to survive in the wilderness) He also watches EWTN and Jesus movies, Old testament movies. I can almost always hear what he is watching, so I’m not worried about the quality, just the quantity)

anyway, I think the main problem is that he is from a place where the cost of living is VERY high, and therefor the salaries are VERY high. His last long-term job had a very high salary, nothing he could ever come close to here. Even though the cost of living is much lower here, I think he just cant imagine working for half of what he made there (or 1/4 for some of the jobs) So I think he is kindof just in job “culture shock” and waiting until he finds something that could come close to what he used to make.
Most women would just deal with it and get a job anyway, but I think men have much more “pride” when it comes to work.
Plus, he seems to be a “all or nothing” type of person, so that might be a factor too.

Also, just this weekend, he started doing more stuff. He helped me with cleaning the front yard up, and he fixed some rails in the house that have been needing fixed. he did a bunch of other stuff today. Honestly, I think it’s because some nice people on here have been praying for us, so if you have, THANKS! : )

From what you describe here I would say this is a very significant factor, if not the sole factor, of what is going on. I had a brother in law who moved to this state from out of state and would go around saying “I don’t work for less than x” with all sorts of pride in his voice. Meawhile he had a newborn baby and his wife was working part time. They did not have money set aside to live off of.

I felt like shaking him and saying “Listen, you have a BABY, you have NO JOB and NO INCOME, you need to get ANY JOB YOU CAN, EVEN IF IT’S A MINIMUM WAGE JOB!” From there you can look for other jobs and work your way up to higher paying jobs.

But he was stuck in his mindset and just couldn’t adjust (eventually he did, but his wife sent him to live with his parents after trying to get him to apply for jobs and he really didn’t put forth effort as there were no jobs in his field paying anything close to what he ‘expected’.

What’s the best way to approach it? I think in some way putting the issue on the table to start a dialogue about it. This way you can work with him to get him to accept that he has the responsibility to get A JOB, it might take a little while and it sounds like you know him well, so just use your best judgement as to how to approach the subject without damaging his pride (less he may dig his heels in psychologically speaking, deeper). Find ways, or try to, to make him feel good about going out and earning money for the family, keeping busy, even if he looks at it as a hobby or a way to get out of the house and bond a little with some male co-workers, whatever works.

But that issue has to be discussed. Otherwise he will wait for a job that might not re-appear for 4 years or so. By then what is his resume going to look like? A dip in salary or job responsibility is one thing, big time gaps are worse. The longer the gap the worse that it is. People wonder and figure everyone is lying when they describe the job gap. If it’s a few months, well laid off and need to take a lower paying job due to economy… 5 years??? What the heck? You start talking about the economy? You better be talking about taking care of your wife with terminal illness that you gave 24 hour care to or something to make them not look down on you for such a long gap… you get the idea and I think you know what to do.

Get to it. You’ve got the brains and hte know how. Put them to work.
