How to welcome people in irregular unions to the Church

Yes. If you decide to join the church, a job, or any kind of group, you must obey their rules, or not join. Maybe do some research as to why “irregular unions” are wrong in the Catholic church, so you will know what is expected of you to participate in the sacraments.

I think you are the only person who has mentioned unrepentant sinners who are refusing correction???. I’ve talked about people in irregular unions. Just because a person cannot or hasn’t changed their state in life, does not give us the right to judge their heart. How can you tell if somebody is repentant and doesn’t know what step to make next because all they are being told is “READ YOUR BIBLE” “Stop living in sin” Like i said. Its like yelling at a drowning person where to swim to… when they are drowning…instead of helping them

Well said. 1 John 1:8-10 New International Version (NIV)

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

If you decide to join the church… you must obey their rules. So what you are saying is that, if you break any of the ten commandments, you shouldn’t be Catholic because you haven’t obeyed their rules? Love comes before faith but you are saying if they don’t have the faith to believe they are living wrong, not to join the group?? I’m confused. I thought faith was a gift and a grace that God gives us… I didn’t think it was something we could pull out like a wallet.

I’m going to have to agree and disagree with you.

As a person who lived in an irregular situation for years, I can tell you I have felt many different things. Never once have i wanted the truth watered down or for the Church to abandon her teachings. I don’t think that helps anybody. But there a very vocal group that says they are part of the Catholic church that if you were in an irregular union and you stumbled onto one of a few dozen websites or blogs, which purport to be Catholic, you would feel that you were kicked out of the Church by your state in life. You would be shamed, maligned, called terrible things. I know this doesn’t happen at church, but I have seen 2 SSA men walk into a very orthodox church and get stared at and the gasps were audible. These 2 poor men walked out. I heard people in front of me and behind me whispering about them. I have talked to people who have experienced similar things or who have witnessed similar things.

You cant show people the truth if you don’t get their attention first. These people are drowning in sin and instead of sending in a lifeguard, were yelling at the what to do. We throw them a life preserver maybe but are too scared to get involved in their lives. Christ feared nobody, in any situation they were in, and He went right into their lives to show them the truth. He couldn’t just tell them the truth hoping that they would hear Him. He rescued them or showed such concrete acts of love… In so many instances, only after a broken person experiences this kind of love, can they be truly receptive the to the truth were speaking.
A friend and I visit other churches and monasteries etc… a couple of times per month. Personally, I like the variety. Are you saying that people think we are gay?

You will have to forgive me for not buying your story about the gay men. How did you know they were gay? How did the entire church know that they were gay? My friend and I have never had such an experience. Were they wearing name tags or making out in the church?

Disparaging the church with false bigotry accusations is a lousy thing to do.

I don’t need you to believe my story for it to have happened lol. Sometimes, SSA men dress look and act a certain way. Sometimes prostitutes dress and look a certain way. Sometimes, we can tell that a person has SSA. Sometimes we can tell a person is a prostitute. Depending on the area of town we are in. Depending on if we know the people. Depending on if its our best friends cousin.

Whatever we do we do not water down the very words of Jesus Christ about the permanence of marriage, that’s for sure.

Just because it hasn’t happened to you, means it hasn’t happen to anyone else? That’s funny reasoning.

To be clear an SSA coupling is not a marriage, legal or outside of the law.

An ssa coupling is not a marriage; it’s a mere aping or mimicing of natural marriage.

I am pretty sure that the OP wasn’t asking about SSA couples in the original post but more along the lines of people who are perhaps divorced, separated, or cohabitating.
Front rows are available for the greatest sinners.
Very true, and many avoid the front row like the plague in the churches I frequent.

Like I said above, kindness and compassion go a lot further and make a bigger impact in people’s lives that whispers, judgement, and ostracising others.

Actually it’s because I need a clear view of my ASL interpreter but I don’t care if anyone want to sit on the same row. Just don’t block my view.

I guess my topic was specific about welcoming people in irregular unions but it really can be extended to anybody who has felt ostracised or unwelcome.

Theres a great song by Casting Crowns called “If we are the body”

The song includes lyrics like

“It’s crowded in worship today
As she slips in trying to fade into the faces
The girl’s teasing laughter is carrying farther than they know
Farther than they know”

and

“A traveler is far away from home
He sheds his coat and quietly sinks into the back row
The weight of their judgemental glances
Tells him that his chances are better out on the road”

“Meet people where they are” , yes, but God wants more from us. He wants us to be free from sin. And the Catholic church has shown over and over what those sins are

I predicted this was the real intention from the first post…a slow slide to discuss “alternative” couplings. Boy, were my instincts correct.

Why the slyness, the deception?

I guess I didn’t want the whole thread to become derailed with SSA only discussion. Apologies! :+1:t2:
He wants us to be free from sin.
He does! And we should keep trying and being kind to one another when we sin, and fail, and disappoint ourselves and God.

It was deceptive but obvious to veterans here. Another post about the alphabet…and woe is us.
