LDS can and do harass people door to door and I wouldn’t be a good sister to you if I told you otherwise but Jesus is the focus. Whatever you are going through now Jesus is the one who saves

Oh but they do. Young men are to go on a mission when they are 18 or 19. It’s not required but the is a lot of stigma attached to those who don’t go. The young women also go on missions if they are not married or engaged at age 21.

I’m sorry you CCD isn’t doing a better job at teaching you the expectations of Catholic Youth. There are firm rules within the Catholic Church, there’s just a book that’s called “Catholic Rules” where everything is listed out one by one. We do a have a very comprehensive book called the Catechism of the Catholic Church. That not only covers the “rules” but outlines why we are to follow them.

This is a major difference between the Catholic Church and the LDS. In Catholicism you are free to ask questions about the rules, free to ask why, free to want more answers. If the Youth Director at your parish isn’t willing to help with this, I would speak to the priest about it. In the LDS asking questions about the faith is really looked down on. Members have been excommunicated for asking questions.

Up thread I gave you some questions to ask your friend or the others who are talking you into this. Have you asked them yet? I am sure you will get a superficial answer at best. Those are some of the questions they don’t like being asked.

You can get a very firm understanding of the “rules” for a Catholic teen if you are willing to work with someone to get them written down in a format that works for you.

Heck, I’d totally be willing to give answers to any questions you have about things that are unclear, using only the catechism and canon law.

First off, they changed the age for both genders to 18. Second of all, a mission is not just going door to door handing out pamphlets. My friend who is LDS is enlisting in the army for 2 years and serving that as his mission. A mission is just 2 years+ of full-time community service. They don’t really go door to door anymore because they realized it doesn’t do much.

They don’t proselytize door-to-door anymore? When did that change?

Any time I see missionaries, they are in their Sunday church clothes, wearing their name tags and carrying their quads.

(ETA)

According to the LDS’s official site, they still proselytize

I’m not sure what your friend is telling you but I’ve had enough LDS missionaries knock on my door. They don’t come to my house now as I live pretty far out in the country.

Check out this link from the source Missionary Service

Nothing could be further from the truth! Sincere questions are welcome. However, when an individual repeatedly and publicly criticizes the leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ there is a possibility of excommunication.

I got stopped in the street and proselytised by two young LDS women not three months ago. They were very insistent I take the Book of Mormon even though I said I am a newly converted practicing Catholic and they did not seem to register that this meant I wasn’t at all interested in Converting or showing up at their service

Really? There are enough folks out there who have left the LDS due to questions not being answered. When someone has a question about…plural marriage and the facts behind its beginning in the LDS and its “ending”, and they want a deeper answer than the typical one?

I’ve asked several LDS on the forum some tough questions and they rarely get answered. If there is a response its more along the lines of how awful the Catholic Chruch is. Why is that? You didn’t answer my question when you once again said I lied.

I knew about the age for young men. My youngest son served in Guatemala at age 18. Fortunately after 7 months he came to a realization that the Mormon church was a giant lie and he returned home. Now he’s a Christian and attends a Baptist church which is a great improvement. I questioned the age of young women because I did not believe the age had been lowered that much. One of my daughters served a mission in Michigan. It was for 18 months. That has always been the same for as long as I can remember.

I didn’t think Loki knew what she was talking about but I was just curious. She’s young and innocent. Besides, I’ve been a Catholic for only 8 months and there’s still a lot that I don’t know.

There is a huge difference between leaving because you’re not satisfied with a response or lack there of, and being excommunicated for asking a question.

Which answer is “the typical one”?

I can only speak for myself, not others.

I do not recall ever saying that you lied. Please point me to my accusation about you if I am in error. This is a debate forum and debate participants call out incorrect statements of other debate participants. That I do often, hopefully in a charitable manner.
This is absolutely true and any Mormon who says otherwise is either extremely ignorant or a bald faced liar. I have a good friend who was a bishop and got the big X for doing exactly that.
There are plenty of sites addressing difficult doctrinal and historical issues in The Church of Jesus Christ from a position of faith and belief.

Just because I’m 14 doesn’t mean I’m stupid. You keep implying that over and over again. Please stop, I don’t enjoy being looked down upon because of my age.

Lemuel,

Holding your son in prayer. You are fortunate that he didnt become agnostic or atheistic.
You as well. It’s not easy going from Mormonism to something else of belief.

Would love to hear how you came to be Catholic if you don’t mind sharing? Perhaps start another thread??

Agnostic isn’t nearly as bad as atheistic, IMO. Atheistic means that you don’t believe there’s anything supreme over the universe. Agnostic means that you think there could be something supreme over the universe, but there’s not enough scientific evidence to truly make you believe. I have a few friends who are agnostic, and one has tried explaining it to me a few times, but it’s really complicated. He doesn’t believe in “God” in the sense that the supernatural being ruling over us can be personified, so he doesn’t use a specific word when he prays. Most agnostics are more open to accepting the possibility of a higher power than atheists, who will mostly deny the existence no matter what evidence you present them with. Agnostics tend to be a lot more fluid and flexible with their beliefs as well, and in most cases, they still believe that people should make an effort to do good in their lives, where as atheists have no beliefs and think that it doesn’t matter what you do in this life because there won’t be another one after this.

Would you provide specifics rather than such a broad claim. What ECF believed whatever Jesus Christ was men may become? What writing is this contained in?
