Generally I think the mormons have been pretty successful in normalizing themselves. I dont think most people on the street realize how radically different their theology is from Nicene Christianity.

Can you give another example of a religious group that has a divine mandate that is politically based?

Please, lets leave politics out of the Non-Catholic forum. Please

Thanks for that info. I didn’t know we could check that. I still can’t figure out how to quote posts!

The LDS have made a strong connection between religion and politics. I think that part of the discussion is very relevant.

However, I do agree that politics should be kept out of the conversation.

What do you mean by “politically based”?

Lots of religious groups say they have a divine mandate that affects political issues. Church of England or Church of Denmark or any of the other national churches in Europe? The history of Catholic Europe and its entanglement with secular kingdoms? Islam? Dominionist Christians in the United States like people at the Family Research Council and Michelle Bachman who think the government should be ruled entirely by Christians?

I can find the quote if anyone is interested, but Ezra Taft Benson said that studying the Constitution should be the second most important course of study next to the scriptures.

Those are good examples. Well, in order to keep the thread on topic, I would say those religions that directly affect American politics in the way Mormonism attempts to.

Did you read the article from Ezra Taft Benson I put a link to? It describes in detail how their position is supported in their scripture and by a visit from our dead Founding Fathers.

Michelle Bachman may be a Christian, but a single person’s beliefs does not equate with a religion’s foundational belief system.

Well, honestly (not sure if this is out of bounds) but I think Mormonism is kind of a silly American religion full of non-historical tales about lost tribes of Israel sailing across the Atlantic and other stuff rooted in a sort of American nationalism. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a proud American but I think it unseemly and shortsighted to presume such divine preference for one country over all others. In this even in it’s most politically entwined years the Catholic Church has managed to elevate itself above petty national interests and remain a church for all people from all lands.

When you talk about sailing across the Atlantic, I wonder if you’ve ever studied the Book of Ether and the story of the Jaredites crossing the ocean in 8 barges. It’s so incredibly unbelievable that it makes the story of Noah’s Ark look as easy as a Boy Scout overnight. It’s more incredible than Moses parting the sea. It’s such total nonsense. There’s nothing about it that any rational person, even someone who believes in miracles and divine intervention, could or would believe.

Sure that argument can be asserted about the Catholic Church throughout history. The topic of politics evolved in this thread due to my opinion as to why the LDS have attempted to move away from their original teachings.

I presented the op-ed piece from Mitt Romney and the Ezra Taft Benson article to support my opinion that the LDS Church’s attempt to become more mainstream is politically, not religiously motivated.

I have not read about that. Where did these eight barges land?

I’m sure it’s mostly to increase their membership and reach. I think some sort of political motive is overthinking things.

The attack against the Vatican by Trump was on the national news either last night or the night before, either NBC or CBS. I heard it while fixing Mama’s supper. All I could think was, “I hope Melania gets on to him about that. You don’t diss the Vatican. You don’t diss the Pope. I don’t care who you are.”

I did, and it is a bizarre article to be sure. But it’s pretty old, and I know a number of Mormons, some even in leadership, and I’m sure they don’t give it any thought at all if they’re even aware of its existence.

Put in context as to the type of person Benson was and the culture of America during his life, sheds light on his talk.
Benson was big into the John Birch Society and it shaped his personal American values. Very ultra conservative.
