I’m going to again ask you to back up your assertion… even though… again… I know you won’t do it. Man, my motivation is slipping so badly, I almost lost consciousness typing that sentence.

Which invented gods are similar to YHWH/Jehovah/Jesus? In what respects are they similar?
ALL of them. You claim a book as evidence, so do they.
What differences do you see? Not imagine or feel, but see?

You may have thought those “black rectangles” in the “running naked fight with my naked assistant” scene were too big, but you would be WRONG!

It cost me a FORTUNE to CGI out my “exceeding manliness” which extended past what audiences would accept as “realistic” in that scene!

What makes you able to say that the start of the universe needs a cause, yet your god does not?
Do you have some bit of knowledge you have not shared with me, or is this another thing which can only be known by internal feelings?
I never said that the universe needs a cause. I think it’s rational to suppose an uncaused universe. I believed it for years.

What I said is that God does not need a cause, because you asked what His cause was.

That’s absurd. Zeus never claimed to have created the universe. He inherited it from the Titans. My greek mythology is a bit rusty, but I think the Titans just stumbled across it.

Similarly for Norse myths - no Norse god claims be transcendant to the universe. They’re just big and powerful.

So let me repeat. Which invented gods do you think have similar attributes to our God?

I’m sorry you were given wrong information as a child. That really is a tragedy.

But to assert that the current church teachings are watered down, you would have to demonstrate that those stories accurately reflected the church teachings of the times. You have not made any attempt to do so.

The catechism says that hell is a separation from God. Are you claiming it said something different in your youth? If so, let’s hear what it said, and let’s discuss it.
As a kid, I was told it was torture, eternally. The bible itself describes it as a ‘furnace of fire’.
Saying it is a seperation from god doesn’t really describe it the way the catholic church and catholic school did. I was too young at the time to collect evidence, but let’s just accept the biblical description as the authority on hell. Furnace of fire.
Is part of heavens bliss knowing that a lot of bad people are suffering in a furnace for eternity? I haven’t heard any particulars of heaven except that you get to worship all the time…

What exactly do you mean here? I have only seen the previews.

Why would the authors of the bible put so much care and detail into a ‘hell’ definition, yet not offer details of heaven?
There isn’t’ that much care and detail in the hell definition. There are a couple places where it says that it involves fire. A couple where it says darkness.

What need of assuming a god if the universe is uncaused? It is glaringly clear that he does not interact with observable reality in any measurable way…

All of them. If you have something to present which you think makes your god more likely to be true, lets see it!

No it isn’t.

I love this A style of one line replies. It really makes the conversation a lot easier. 👍

OK… so which attributes of your old favorite, Zeus, are similar to the Christian God?

When you say that the existence of your god is a fact, you are claiming your faith is knowledge. It is not.
God is a fact to us because He is proven to exist by empirical proof of His existence from a source which you will not accept as a valid source.

We have faith in Him that He will continue to prove Himself to us as God, in the future. We have faith in His promises. We KNOW, though, that He exists as God.

That you don’t possess this knowledge, or have this faith, does not preclude us having those things.

You have faith that we are wrong, based merely on whatever it is that confirms that belief the you experience, and yet we don’t believe that you don’t possess THAT knowledge! Why do you presume to be “superior in judgement” to us?
If you had knowledge, you would not need faith. If the existence of your god was a fact, it would have evidence other than feelings.
You misunderstand “faith” to mean whatever it is that you think it means which would make faith and knowledge mutually exclusive.

Just as religion and science, science being a tool OF and a creation OF religion, best exemplified in the Catholic understanding of “religion”, are not “at war” (mutually exclusive or even “battling for supremacy of truth”), faith and knowledge are not mutually exclusive.

If you have knowledge, faith deepens. When God becomes a fact, God is evidenced everywhere.

I guess I stop one unfounded assumption before you do.
We are constantly looking to disprove God. That is a rather well kept open secret of the Church!

We simply haven’t been able to, and since the results of believing in God has nothing but good effects, we see very little reason to assume the obverse.

The results of “bad religion”, one of which is your belief system, being in your case, apparently, a “materialistic scientism”, are inhuman human behavior and a proliferation of chaos and degradation of all things that man touches in his sin.

It’s easy to “bash religion”, while holding yourself aloof as “not one of them” in your ignorance of the consequences of your own religion.

That you would take that as an insult tells me how “adult” you actually are.

Your later statement literally confirms this:
“As a kid, I was told it was torture, eternally.”

Your understandings are those of your typical 6 year old, in my opinion. Why does that bother you?

You’re perfectly welcome to make any observation of me you wish. 🙂

Uh,…

Apparantly, we are having a record-breakingly cold day today. I have to walk 40 minutes into work.
The forecast is calling for -49C (-56.2F for our American friends)

No it isn’t.

Though again, I have to repeat that the style at least gets response 🙂

Also, being a Friday night, I have partaken of a beer or two, so am back in chat mode. I am partially through with your response though.

However, there is part of it that I could post that would be useful to get out, and save us time later:

"“Please proceed to step 2.”

Take it easy on me! If I had more time, I’d attempt to work with your example of an improbable event, but how to work with it at the moment escapes me. The reason for this is you’ve given the reason for it being an improbable event is that it is the combination of improbable events. While this is absolutely true, it boils down to ‘it is improbable because it’s improbable’ Could you come up with any other single event that you could consider to be the most (or very) improbable?

Cheers!
