It begins at sundown on Sundays and solemnities but lasts till midnight of the day (any Mass on Sunday will fulfill the Sunday obligation).

He is not Catholic. He does not need to confess. He can not receive the Eucharist yet and the laws of fast and abstinence do not apply.

Aha okay yeah so @TheOldColonel was in error.

I remember now that’s the doctrine.

And @Mi_Rose thanks for the correction, but I already acknowledged such a couple posts up.

That was not aImed specifically at you. Iknow he needs information for the future but he also needs to know what does and does not apply now.

I ate supper at the soup kitchen, I sat w/ a fellow
Catholic, we had a nice chicken dish w/ mashed
potatoes and veggies. Then I remembered that
The Day was Friday! I IMMEDIATELY left half
of my chicken uneaten, I didn’t tell my friend
seeing he had already finished. I think that is
the way to avoid sinning against your conscience,
SPIT IT OUT if it is bothering you!

So, if it was dinner you’re likely fine. I had meatloaf as soon as it got dark. It was great.
This is not correct.

We are not to eat meat on Fridays. Friday is midnight to midnight. It has nothing to do with the liturgy.

Canon law:
Can. 202 §1. In law, a day is understood as a period consisting of 24 continuous hours and begins at midnight

@GLam1761 That was only venial then due to your lack of consent.

The fact you then remembered and ceased from your error is a great sign of devotion to God and obedience to His Holy Church, good for you.

The liturgical day ends at sundown. Most Catholics mistakenly believe it’s midnight. But that’s not true. All reckoning of liturgical time hinges on the new day beginning at sundown since ancient people generally had no reliable way to calculate midnight. That’s why Easter vigil must start after dark. It is liturgically Sunday once the sun disappears on a Saturday. So, if it was dinner you’re likely fine. I had meatloaf as soon as it got dark. It was great.
No. A fast is midnight to midnight.

I myself did not know the CCC teaching on what constitutes
a day, so I follow the Jewish tradition of sundown to sundown,
around 7:30 p.m.

Remember this;

Jesus said that its not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man but what comes out of it!

I believe that many of the rules we have today are there to make one stick to one faith, one denomination.

Yes, i love being a Catholic, but, i love Jesus more!

On another note…why was there even shrimp at a BBQ place?
A BBQ place near I live offers fish tacos, initially it was only seasonally during Lent, but now it’s year round for those guests who rather not eat the other meats (beef, pork, chicken and turkey). It helps that the owner of the BBQ joint is Catholic.

Related: some fast food chains, like Jack in the Box, only offers their fish sandwiches during Lent.

More than anything I was really asking why the dad, who is anti-Catholic, orders shrimp in a BBQ place on a Friday in lent in front of his son who is possibly converting.

Sounds seriously passive-aggressive.

Nope! Not even a sin. Do you know how many times, not realizing it was Fri, some of us ate meat! Furthermore, eating fish isn’t a penance for most of us. We go to red lobster. Apostles were fisherman. Fish is an industry. Did it need an economic push?? Fish was a symbol of early Christians when persecuted.

My dad order the last bit of shrimp left and they had already ran out of cat fish , he dosnt know i want to join the catholic church , it was more of a accident

Eating fish is a penance for me. I hate fish so I often forget on Fridays during Lent it is Friday and order bacon and eggs for breakfast or a sausage biscuit and then later recall “I did it again”!
It is not intentional. No matter how often I tell myself this Lent I am going to abstain from meat on Fridays, I keep slipping.
Already I forgot the first two Fridays! I feel remorseful afterwards.

If you use a smartphone, you could set a reminder on it on Friday mornings,or maybe on Thursday evening so you set out a bagel or cereal right where you can see it before you go to bed.

Just a reminder for everyone reading the thread, because I’ve seen this idea a lot this Lent (on CAF and elsewhere): fish is in no way required on Fridays. Anything vegetarian is fine.

All the best 🙂
Any idea why your parents is not with the Catholic church and your likeness towards it?
