I was told since I was a young girl in primary to defend the truth to all religions. I am here because I find Catholics interesting. I work with a Catholic girl

My parents taught me ONLY to read church related materials. I’m sorry if that bothers you!

I read and prayed, I am still staying catholic. I guess I am lacking something. * shrug *

Welcome to CAF, Liz. You can surely defend what you believe, but you can’t offend what you don’t know.

What you know about Catholics is coming from the teaching of your religion. What you don’t really know is the things that the Catholic Church actually teaches.

Since you find Catholics interesting, you can ask them questions especially things that you can’t understand why Catholics believe?

For example: your first post on this thread you said that Catholics bow down to the Pope, and one answered we bow not to worship him but to show respect. If you have ever been to some countries such as Japan or Korea, you will find out that people bow down to each other as a way to show their respect.

It is interesting that Lizs says we must read the BOM, but she will not read anything non-mormon. Double standards are a huge impediment to dialogue…

Not unusual with a lot of Mormons. Many won’t read anything that isn’t found at Deseret Book.

Your parents were doing their duty to guide you into what they believe is the truth. But if you are now a well formed adult, it will not hurt you to view the world through the other end of the telescope. There are many adult Mormons who have retained their faith after seeing what the rest of the world has to offer. If you are not old enough to be a missionary, then I would say you should follow the parental advice and stay away from us until you are older.

Dear Liz,

You are not defending what you believe is truth. You are attacking what you think is not. There’s a difference. It’s good to obey parents. But, if are out on your own it’s time to really buckle down and make sure your faith is the right one.

And you can only tell that by studying other religions and their claims. It doesn’t “bother” us that you don’t read other materials. It just shows that you are not willing to meet other religions half-way.

Peace…

MW

Don’t you guys allow more than one wife?

What is your stance on polygamy?

I have been a Mormon all my life and to this day I can’t believe you all are other religions! If you read the Book of Mormon you would truly see it is true…😦
Muslims tell us the same…should we believe Smith or Muhammad’s angel 😃

I think we should show you far more consideration than you show us.

You refuse to read non-Mormon sources, yet demand that we read your Mormon material. This is being intellectually dishonest.

I would also like to point out that it is against forum rules to proselytize Catholic to convert to a non-Catholic religion. Be careful in your posts. You can ask about Catholic teachings or defend Mormon teaching, but do not try to convert people or you will be violating the rules of this rather closely moderated forum.

I certainly am not as far along in my catholic journey as others are in theirs. But I can tell you that I have read parts of the quran, and some of the BOM, plus lots written by non-catholic christians, as well as deists and atheists. I also have many non-catholic, and non christian, acquaintances. None of these experiences has weakened my faith in the long run. To the contrary, they have helped me become stronger in my catholic faith. People who aren’t sure of their own ideas risk getting lost in someone else’s. Confident belief is not afraid of other ideas.

Dear Liz,

If you have a question about a Catholic teaching or doctrine then we can start there. We can explore both the Catholic and Mormon view on things one subject at a time.

Perhaps starting with the Great Apostacy would make sense. For that I would refer you to an already existing thread that explores that issue very well. From there we can move on to something else.

Um… then aren’t you disobeying them by coming to a Catholic forum where you’ll inevitably be exposed to non-Mormon theology?

Don’t you need to know the Truth before defending it?

How do you know you have the Truth and we don’t? What if we had the Truth?

How is it fair to ask us to read Mormon documents if you won’t read Catholic ones? What if our parents taught us to read nothing but Catholic documents?

hmmm looks like she was scared off. I have pmed me and she said I dind’t know anything and I should just leave her be. I think we caught us a troll

Nah, I don’t she was a troll. Just a naive young person.

I have been a Mormon all my life and to this day I can’t believe you all are other religions! If you read the Book of Mormon you would truly see it is true. I don’t know why you all choose to read anti materials and listen to EXMormons.

I feel bad for those who have lost the true gospel but there is always time to come back. I have been reading posts for about 6 months and have decided to join. I have always been interested in the whole Idea people are Catholic because they seemed a bit messed up. I mean you bow down to a Pope. So very sad.😦
How do you bow down to a “Prophet”. How very sad. 😦
