I would love for someone to give me a better understanding of speaking in tongues and what it means, why it occures, etc. Also I have some personal questions of my own if it is possible to private message someone about it I would be so grateful! I spoke to a priest about it a while back and he did not have any concrete answers for me. I also tried to speak to one of my family members but they did not understand. I have read scripture and prayed, received the sacraments too. Just feel sort of alone… 😦

Welcome! I would call the local office of the Catholic Charimatic Renewal. This is very hotly debated at CAF and much confusion reigns - which is not conducive to a valuable exchange of ideas.

FYI, I have had some involvement in the Charismatic Renewal and credit its efforts with leading me to be docile to the Holy Spirit. This lead to an amazing increase in my faith.

For the record, I have never uttered a single syllable in a tongue. Not my charism.

Is there a way we could email eachother so we could speak in depth??

I don’t have much depth as far as certain charisms go, but what I do know was revealed to me via the Charismatic Renewal. You can PM - but you may need more posts here before that is permitted.

One thing to watch out with speaking in tongues. It is something I have heard about and something I have seen. What I saw was someone speaking in tongues giving glory to Satan in Arabic.

Really? I’ve been around people who were speaking in tongues a few times and I have always been VERY uncomfortable. Maybe that was the reason. I don’t like it at all.

I always thought it was just made-up stuff, kind of like a child babbling away in his crib. Maybe it doesn’t mean anything at all.

On a lighter note: I have a dog that snores and vocalizes in his sleep. He sounds so funny when he gets going. A snort, a whine, a syllable or two that sounds like he is saying “whee! whee! eeee eeee”. He hasn’t said any English words yet. I am just waiting. People who talk in tongues take this thing very seriously. It would make sense if it were an actual language.

Ofcourse it is possible, because people who are possesed by demon or under his fluence can also speak in tongues but they give glory to satan. When someone, who is in faith, speaks in tongues he is giving glory to God. You cannot be in faith and give glory to satan and reverse. In charismatic groups there are always people who confirm and check charisms, those are persons who are in faith for years, who are in prayer and charismatic movement for longer time and also there is always more than one person who checks and confirms charisms. Noone can be measure for himself.
I am sorry for my poor language, not english native speaker. l am writing this from my own experience.

Speaking in tongues is charism of the Holy Spirit. It can also be singing in tongues, praying and as mentioned speaking. Maybe you don’t understand what you are speaking but you give glory to God. In charismatic movement there are people who translate/interpret singing, praying and speaking in tongues. It is also a charism.
Here is link of international charismatic catholic renewal. ICCRS

There is also a protestant charismatic movement, it is simmilar in some things to catholic but they are not the same. If you’re catholic join catholic movement.
And there is also something called “baptims in Holy Spirit”, usualy you go on semminary for 6 months where you learn about Catholic Church, Holy Spirit and charisms, where you prepare yourself for “baptism in Holy Spirit”. After 6 months of seminary on specific chosen day people from group lay hands over people who were candidates on semminary and you receive charisms. It is also possible to receive charisms of Holy Spirit alone, without being part of charismatic movement but it is safer for layman to be prepared in group because you cannot lead yourself in that alone if you are “begginer”.

I hope l explained at least one thing properly

Linguists have shown that when a person is speaking in tongues the sounds tend to derive from the speaker’s native language, suggesting this might subconsciously derive from what the speakers thinks an alien language should sound like.

One thing I’ve always wanted to see is a double-blind test on speaking in tongues. Have some people speak in tongues apart from each other. Then have several people who say they have the gift of interpretation watching from a monitor and with the interpreters separate from each other. Then have each interpreter translate each person’s speaking in tongues and then later see how well the interpreters match (if it all).

I heard 2 years ago that there was a test made by one secular tv magazine in my country, they were testing a people who speak in tongues but l am sure noone of them was catholic.
But l don’t remember details and what was the result.

If somebody doesn’t believe it is okay. It is different if someone who listens speaking in tongues is in faith and supports it; opposed to someone who doesn’t it can sound stupid, nonsense, funny. I don’t know, before conversion I didn’t support it and l was mocking all these things very agressively.
Also speaking in tongues isn’t just christian thing and not everyone who speak in tongues are inspired by Holy Spirit and then it is not the same.
Speaking in unknown languages can be found in spiritsm and channeling but then it is not comparable to charism of speaking in tongues that is present in Catholic Church.

The best example I can give of the traditional Catholic understanding of speaking in tongues:
Say I only speak Latin as my native language and I don’t know how to speak any other language, and you only speak English as your native tongue and know no other language, In the case of speaking in tongues I would be speaking in Latin, and you an only English speaker would understand me in your native English although I’m speaking in Latin.

As for these charismatic movements (yes, Catholic ones too) and their version of speaking in tongues,
as has been correctly pointed out in previous posts in this thread one must watch themselves with this practice as it is not the traditional Catholic understanding of speaking in tongues, see for yourself:

My understanding is in these charismatic movements, these people go into them seeking to obtain some charism from the Holy Spirit and the problem is that they leave themselves open and when you leave a door open you don’t know who it is that is going to enter, my understanding is this is what often happens, even though it isn’t their intentions for something like this to happen.
Peace ✌️

It would make sense if it were an actual language.
In Acts the speaking in tongues was just that, people were speaking different (established) languages, and could understand each other.
5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and wondered, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Par′thians and Medes and E′lamites and residents of Mesopota′mia, Judea and Cappado′cia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phryg′ia and Pamphyl′ia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyre′ne, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” (Acts 2:5-13)
I myself am not too warm to the concept of “glossolalia” (basically speaking nonsense). If a unilingual German started speaking my native French relatively fluently, then I would stand up and take notice.

Otherwise I consider it an affectation.

But why to test? What is the purpose?
Claims are being made. There is a claim that those with the gift of tongues can speak a language unknown to them, and there is a claim that those with the gift of interpretation can translate that language.

We test claims all the time, both natural and supernatural. Tongues should be no different. The more we successfully test a claim the more we can endorse it. Believers should embrace scrutiny, not seek to avoid it.

Well you would be open if you would use spiritism seanse to call Holy Spirit and expect that the “ghost” that showed up or is speaking is Holy spirit. But praying to God in way that is confirmed and approved by Church as part of charismatic movement is not the same as inviting demons, not even unintentionaly.
But on the other hand one can open himself in negative spiritual way if he is doing some things on his own while not being obedient to spiritual director.
For example people can think that channeling is the same as apparation of Virgin Mary.
Also people at mass are praying to Holy Spirit, so isn’t that also opening spiritual doors? People pray at home to Holy Spirit, isn’t that also opening? In churches we also pray Hymn to Holy Spirit, so isn’t that opening?
I know it is not usual for everyone and not everybody is fammiliar with charismatic movement’s way of prayer and simmilar but there are some misunderstandings.

Yes, you’re right, everyone in prayer group should be under obedience and leadership of spiritual director. As l previously said noone can be measure for himself.

Sometimes objectivity is not the measure. You can have two or more perspectives on one thing. I think that there is no consensus for this thing.

What would be checked here would be the words themselves and not any implications of those words. If two separate Russian interpreters translated a speech by Vladimir Putin in the U.N. they’ll get the same translation. The words are a brute fact. They would not need to have the same opinion as to the social and political ramifications those words may have.

Two people with the same gift from the Holy Spirit should have the same translation of a single instance of a person speaking in tongues. If they don’t match then one or both does not have the gift of interpretation.

Nearly 100% of the time it’s not real. Just people trying to show exterior holiness. Don’t even bother looking into it.
