!973 was the year I travelled up into the Highlands of Scotland .

During that beautiful holiday we crossed Loch Leven by the Ballachulish Ferry which linked North Ballachulish with South Ballachulish . In 1975 the ferry was closed because a bridge had been built across the loch .

It was a warm sunny day . What I remember most were the hedgerows of fuschia which lined the road down to the ferry . Everything seemed beautiful that day .

June 29th is the feast of St Peter and St Paul, the two patron saints of Rome .One festivity takes place outside the Vatican: starting in St Peter’s Square, volunteers build a spectacular carpet of flowers that leads down Via della Conciliazione and towards the River Tiber. Known as the Infiorata, it’s a tradition started by a master florist in the 17th century and not much changed today.Unfortunately it has been cancelled this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic .

Apricots and gillyflowers.”

It looks like Honesty, or Pope’s Pennies it’s other name ?Perhaps it’s related 🤔

A sonnet by Helen Hunt Jackson

Some flowers are withered and some joys have died;
The garden reeks with an East Indian scent
From beds where gillyflowers stand weak and spent;
The white heat pales the skies from side to side;
But in still lakes and rivers, cool, content,
Like starry blooms on a new firmament,
White lilies float and regally abide.
In vain the cruel skies their hot rays shed;
The lily does not feel their brazen glare.
In vain the pallid clouds refuse to share
Their dews, the lily feels no thirst, no dread.
Unharmed she lifts her queenly face and head;
She drinks of living waters and keeps fair.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions this morning was the first time in nearly 4 months I was able to be at Mass and to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation .

In Confession the priest asked me to pray for all who have died recently from the pandemic .

These flowers are in memory of all who have died from Coronavirus .

Chrysanthemums are considered flowers of death and grief in general. They are commonly used in Catholic funerals and on graves. It is believed that chrysanthemum coronarium, or the “Crown Daisy,” was arranged on Christ’s body when he was put in the tomb.

I thank all of you for the beautiful array of flower pictures! To see all that was extraordinary. Wonderful photos!

Due to age and being “high risk” I am confined to my house and backyard. No problem, I can pray, read, work on my hobby of card-making (with pressed flowers and leaves) and have nearby relatives who do grocery shopping and “distance” visiting with me.

A flower for @Dorothy .

The Super Dorothy rambling rose with a musical accompaniment .

Thank you for the beautiful picture and in a little while I will listen to the song!

I just listened to the song and then understood the words. It is about a man who loves a woman who is not likely to love him back. She gets distracted easily.

Such words makes me think of how God loves us and is so patient with us, always trying to call us deeper into His Life…or into deeper repentance…etc…

Yes, we are all rambling roses.

Jesus is the Master Gardener.

Our Blessed Mother tends the garden… or is there a better way of describing her part?

My grandmother would remind us that if it rains today the Feast of St Swithun it will rain for the next 40 days .

The story goes that Bishop Swithun lived in Winchester in the time of king Alfred the Great. Before he died, Bishop Swithun asked that he should not be buried inside the great Cathedral of Winchester with the nobility and other bishops. Swithun had spent his life with ordinary people and he wanted to be buried in the churchyard with them. When the beloved bishop died his wish was granted.

Eventually the Pope declared that Swithun should be made a saint. Bishop Ethelwold of Winchester decided that a saint ought to have a special grave – not an ordinary one outside the church. Now that Swithun was a saint he could have a place of honour inside the great Cathedral. A ceremony and procession was arranged to take the coffin from the churchyard to a special burial place inside the Cathedral. The date was fixed as 15 July and grand preparations were made.

On 15 July, when St Swithun’s body was to be moved, the sky clouded over and heavy rain began to fall. It rained and rained. It rained all that day and all the next. Each day Bishop Ethelwold looked out of his window to see if the weather was fit to move the saint, but it still rained. It rained for forty days! After forty days of rain the bishop decided that it was a sign to leave St Swithun where he was – outside with the ordinary people of the city of Winchester.

There is an old rhyme which tells of St Swithun’s day

St Swithun’s Day if thou dost rain,
For forty days it will remain.
St Swithun’s Day if thou be fair,
For forty days ‘twill rain no mair.

In Winchester Cathedral each year there is a floral display .

Hydrangeas are blossoming now .

When grown in alkaline soil, the bloom colours are pinker. When grown in acidic soil, the bloom colours are bluer.
