OK, I’ll bite.

EXCUSE ME? If this man were addicted to heroin or crystal meth, or even used it on occasion for that matter (with children in the house, no less), would you recommend that the OP accept these habits and addictions?
excellent point… What a bunch of hooey…

If he had any love for her and his children, he would not have done htis… but he did it not once but at least twice (that she knows of)…

He has shown that, objectively speaking, he has chosen porn over his family… I would ditch this no good so and so… Whether i ever went back is another issue… dependent on many things… but mostly on Jesus… Again, my best recommendation is to spend time with Jesus in the Real Presence… as long as possible… People don’t dothat much anymore… and look at the way the world is… 😦

I don’t think anyone here has to tell you that what you just posted is antithetical to what Catholics believe and what the Bible teaches. Perhaps this manner of thinking goes over well on secular forums, but our perspective and priorities are very different from this. If you would like to know more, find an online copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and search “pornography.”
thanks…

You showed good restraint… I don’t think i will answer because i might not…

It just seems like that would be treating him like a child. If you want to destroy his manhood, thats the way to go…Both of you should agree on an idea, not just restricting your husband from the computer. Does he think he has a problem?
apparently YOU don’t think he has a problem…

treating him like a child?? why not… since he is acting like one…?

destroy his manhood? I think he did that himself… Hello!!!

restrict the computer? I would tempted to get rid of it… & he can show his “manhood” by beating the crud out of me…

If he is the man of the house then you should suport him and be relaxed about what he does. He hasnt had an affair or touched another woman…
I’m sure he might be looking at ways to improve your love life, He married you for being you!! NOT his mother.
But i do understand that he should be doing other things instead of sitting on his pc (Like minding the chilren).
Do you know how long he spends on his sites??
If you loved him then you would accept his habbits/addictions etc…
I’m sure he supports you!

:knight1:
Moral relativism and tolerance shows its ugly head once again…who are to judge that what this person does in his own house blah blah blah…

I KNOW that he has a problem…I have had to fight through this situation myself and treating a grown man like a child doesn’t work…if he is indeed depressed, this will only make him fall deeper into that depression. First he needs to realize he has a problem…If he agrees that he does, then they need to find a way that both of them will be satisfied…If he thinks he cant control himself and wants to put a password on the computer so that he doesnt access those sites, thats a completely different story…but if you just lock him off the computer essentially that will do nothing but cause even more problems…He needs a loving wife not one acting like his mother and taking away computer priviledges.

I don’t think if a man i addicted to porn, he doesn’t love his wife or kids. But, it’s really that he has lost his way. Addictions are often compulsive, and to a degree, not controllable. Like the person feels depressed if he/she can’t have that drink, or watch the porn, or do that drug, and on and on. If that is the case, that is where the root of the problem lies. The difference between drug abuse and porn addiction, is that the addiction is focused on other people, usually women for men, and so this is terribly offensive to a spouse. With drug use, while also destructive albeit in a different way, the object of the addict’s ‘affection,’ is the drug. I think that is why porn addiction is so devestating to marriages–because it’s almost like the person is cheating, because they are lusting after other women, so to speak.

If it’s that easy to shut the internet off, then he would have, and kittery wouldn’t be down this path again. But, I am wondering if serious counseling wouldn’t help get to the root of the problem?
Addictions don’t start over night…there is a process that leads a person into addiction.

Well it’s good to see that so many people have such little respect for marriage.

He’s looking at porn - bad.

You are thinking of leaving him over it - worse. Really worse.

I realize that many of you are running down the path of porn means he’s a drug abusing, child molesting nymphomanic who will either punch her in the face or lose everything in a gambling binge, but let’s take a step back and breathe.

You realize that marriage is sacramental, right? You realize that you are called to stay in that marriage unless some pretty heavy things happen. His watching porn doesn’t reallyy qualify.

I’d also like to venture that we’re only hearing one side of the story.

Now, I realize that I’m defending porn and advocating violence against women and child molestation heavy sarcasm, but I think that some of the posters here really need to think about what they’re suggesting.

Shame on you for six weeks.

Marriage is hard and sometime the other person does things that offend us. We don’t get to walk out just because they no longer are perfect. Let’s get some perspective?

This is so true. Having a husband who was once (before marriage) heavily addicted to pornography, I can say that this is very serious addiction, and it does not automatically mean loss of love for family. The OP said her husband once stopped because of how much it hurt her; an unloving husband wouldn’t even bother to try. Counseling may be the only thing that ultimately breaks this devastating habit. Even if the computer is removed, the images are still in his head, and the fantasy life is still there. He needs all the help he can get – and a lot of grace – to overcome this before it destroys their marriage. “Giving him the boot” will not solve the pornography problem, and it certainly won’t solve the marriage problem.

I’ve never suggested her leaving him. That is very drastic in my book. I suggest Catholic counseling and a fair compromise of ideas how to keep him from looking at pornography. I have been down this road before and I know USUALLY it doesnt lead to drug abuse or any of the other things you have listed. Porn addiction in itself is a huge obstacle to overcome. It seems in the secular world, viewing porn is seen as not a big deal. But it destroys marriage, friendships, relationships, employment and the list could go on and on. Pornography is a tool sent straight from satan to destroy our lives (both those watching porn and the people around that person that are affected by it). Viewing pornography is a grievous sin and is cheating actually because of the lust involved. Here is what Jesus has to say about it…

Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

i agree that porn is (can be) an addiction… and like any addiction… sometimes the only way a person gets serious about overcoming it is when he has hit (what they call in AA) “rock bottom”.

I had an addiction to something most people never even think of as… being addicting… and it ruined me… it was Not until i hit this rock bottom that God could do anything (much) for me…

No joke, I used to be addicted to shopping…as it numbed my anger towards things happening in my life. It actually hurt my marriage, believe it or not, because I was spending money out of control. Usually ‘addictions’ are ways to numb pain, anger, hurt…etc. I think a lot of men use porn in similiar ways. I don’t advocate it and wouldn’t tolerate it, either. But, excusing it as one poster suggested, is like excusing a child who might burn his/her hand on the stove. Why would you stand by and watch someone get hurt? Porn hurts its viewers, just as much as it hurts the viewer’s family. Sin is such an insidious thing…at first,it looks appealing, and like it will actually help you-but in the end, it ruins everything before you know it.

You and your husband are in my prayers kittery. I hope he agrees to counseling…and that your trust in your husband can one day, be restored. (soon!) ((hugs))

Everyone messes up. Every single one of us has committed a mortal sin, and they all send you to hell. We can’t shun people for their faults- we’re human and therefore have a fallen nature. We’re to forgive 7 times or 77 times- and numerically 7 represents a wholeness, an infinity, and so we must always forgive.

None of us are clean without the Grace of God.

Lots of these posters also seem to underestimate human intelligence, love and compassion. Because someone falls it doesn’t mean we’re to leave. Our spouses soul and our soul are one until death. If part of your body was ill, you wouldn’t just leave it alone until it healed. You’d get medicine, you go to a doctor.

For spiritual illness, within yourself or your other half, go to a priest. Get a counselor. Pray to God who can do all things. We’re never given more than we can handle, in anything. If our spouse falls, we have the Grace to keep standing and help them up.

The Samaritan was the only one who stopped to help, the other righteous left him. You don’t leave people who are in pain, hurt and in need of Christ all by themselves.

It hurts, it’s painful. You feel like it’s a personal rejection, like you maybe did something wrong. But you didn’t. It’s their fault. It will become your fault if you don’t help.

I’m not saying it’s right to view porn but what i’m saying is thats his choice to view porn and the more he gets it pointed out to him the more he will do it…
If he is Catholic and practices it then he is aware of it but if he doesnt practice then its only right she should stand by him and try change his point of view gradualy not give him ultimatum’s…
She is his wife not his mother and should show support when he needs her most…

Moral relativism and tolerance shows its ugly head once again…who are to judge that what this person does in his own house blah blah blah…
Its like telling a child “Dont touch” they will, My wife has always said to me porn doesnt interest her but if i wanted to look then i can… I never seem that interested because shes always been there for me in all manner of subjects not just this 1. The more you complaine the more he will do…
Seems to me that the OP has too much on her plate and doesnt seem to have time for him… Not saying thats wrong as a career is important, Kids are important, The Bills are important.

Kittery,

I believe it is for some… but not for most, at least not the married men I know. Now I’m not saying ALL men do this, I definitely know some who do not but many in my age group (mid to late 30s) do. Those who are Christians believe it’s wrong at least on some level (many protestants believe it’s ok when view together as a couple for “martial enhancement” - I use to agree when I was a protestant but now I accept the Church’s teachings) Those same men I’m referring to are all happily married and VERY attracted to their wives. They might look at porn from time to time for a number of reasons. It might be that they feel they aren’t performing up to par for their wife and they are looking for new ideas. It could also be that that they see a picture of someone who reminds them of their wife. When there wife isn’t there or there hasn’t been a chance to renew their marriage covenant in a while…they fall into looking at inappropriate material or inappropriate behaviors.

When I believe there is a problem is when it’s not addressed, when you don’t talk about it. My guess, if he has gone w/o looking at it for 8 months, is that he is trying because he knows it’s important to you. You said that you were trying to improve your career and were gone a lot. You are both probably tired and haven’t had much chance to send time together without the kids, that includes time to just sit and talk or hang out together on the couch and watch TV…

Men do get lonely as well… we don’t often say it we just try to take care of it ourselves and sometimes wind up doing something stupid like looking at porn. Even when we made or helped to make the decision on what’s best for the family.

In regards to asking him… I don’t know your relationship so I can’t say if I would ask him “are you not attracted to me anymore” but rather ask why he is looking at it? If he says “I don’t know” then perhaps you could ask if it’s because you guys needed to spend more time together, is he stressed out etc… and stress on how you can fix it together. You will be able to tell what his answer is. Again, while I’m not him so I can’t be 100% sure, I would guess that if he has gone 8 months, it’s not that he isn’t attracted to you. If during the conversation you want to work in that question, it might be easier that way. But remember, we all go through phases where we might not be as attracted as we once were, that can come back. The important thing is love and that should override all else.

It’s really important for couples, especially those with kids, to focus on each other. Once the kids are grown it’s back to just you guys 🙂 While it’s difficult, he should come first just like YOU should come first for him. We have kids too, that’s not always easy… but again, it should be a goal. None of us are perfect and we never will be but yet if we can grow a little each day through His Grace we look forward to the chance at Eternal life with Him. Marriage is very similar in that with His Grace hopefully each day we can grow a little more together as a couple which can prepare us for when one of us fails.

Hope this helps!
Joe

PS - One more thing. Yes I man should have eyes only for his wife and vice versa. However he is a grown man, a child’s content filter is not the answer. Sometimes we talk in perfect generalities on this board… those aren’t reality. Reality is that we are frail humans who need His Grace and the Help and support of each other, especially our spouses, to succeed. Blocking the porn doesn’t address the issue, it’s just a bandaid that won’t stay on for very long.
Your insight is very helpful. It is SO difficult to bring up and talk about. I feel embarrassed for him, and because of how much this demeans my self-esteem, it’s hard to feel confident in owning up to my true feelings. I totally agree with you that blocking the porn is only a temporary fix. It doesn’t address the ACTUAL issue. I don’t want to treat him like a child who is being punished. After my discovery of his porn issue 8 months ago, I installed x3 watch on my computer which emails me a report of any questionable sites viewed. So I’m 99% sure that he did go 8 months without looking at porn. Uck. I hate porn.

He is not going to stop until he sees how much it is hurting HIM!! I totally agree with your thought of separation… He is not going to change until he sees the full consequences of his actions… If he loses his family over porn and still doesn’t give it up… He has made his choice… If it were me (i don’t know all the details, but… from what i know…) i would leave and never go back until… well, until he repented and… well, i would just let the holy Spirit tell me when it was the right time to return, if ever… children should never be subjected to that kind of thing… I wouldn’t even take a small chance of them being exposed to 1/2 a minute of it…

Praying for you…

and for him (admittedly “reluctantly” )
Well, if it was just him and me, I would feel a LITTLE bit different. BUT, the fact that this did go on when he was supposed to be taking care of the kids is what makes me consider making a strong enough statement that lets him know that I mean business when I say our children deserve better than this and I deserve better than this. The times that sites were being viewed were in the morning (possibly before the kids were up), and in the mid-afternoon (possibly when the kids were napping). I know that he would never let them be exposed to what he’s looking at. He is very cautious about what the children are exposed to even in their cartoons. But you know, if I had a baby-sitter who was doing that while they were supposed to be watching my kids, well…they would be fired.

Not to say that I think it’s that simple and I can fire my husband for screwing up, because I do place a very high value on marriage. But come on! I never thought I would be the girl whose husband pines after porn. It’s so disappointing and so sickening.
