Bobby Jindal asserting himself as a born-again Catholic is campaign rhetoric to assuage the largely Protestant voters of north Louisiana. (It should be remembered that our current governor, Kathleen Blanco, is Catholic and regularly attends the cathedral parish in Baton Rouge.) There were anti-Catholic attack ads used in north Louisiana which is equal opportunity in terms of despising both blacks and Catholics.
I’ve been a state employee for the last twenty-nine years. Mr. Jindal has some really great ideas but the problem that he will face is the same problem the previous three Repulican “reform” governors faced - the legislature. North Louisiana hates south Louisiana - everyone hates the New Orleans area. During my career, I have had the opportunity to serve as a technical expert in testifying before house and senate committees. It turned my stomach. It was nothing but partisan and regional politics.
I don’t have any hope that Mr. Jindal will be able to surmount this. I would love to be optimistic. My experience argues otherwise.
