Hmmm, I didn’t read it like that. I don’t think he’s at all saying that Protestantism is the cause of our original sin.
I didn’t read it like that either. 🙂 I said I thought it was a bit much to RELATE it to the CAUSE of our original sin, as in Adam’s sin.

Whoa, haha! I in now way want to defend heresy but comparing Protestantism to the cause of our original sin seems a little thick. Maybe it’s just because I have never heard that before. Good point though for sure.
They are similar

The sin of Adam was pride; of wishing to believe he could, through his own knowledge and self-reliance dispose of, or compete with God.

To a degree Protestants make each and every one an infallible Pope

You must be thinking of Mormonism.
Are you a Mormon?

Your own example is typical. On another thread I pointed out where Jesus says it’s His real Body and Blood

You disagree.

I pointed out where Paul says this

You disagree.

I pointed out where Church Fathers said this.

You disagree.

I pointed out secondary evidence where the pagans criticised Christians for consuming the Body and Blood

You disagree.

Even when Jesus tells us He’s not talking figuratively you want to suppose that He is.

You disagree based on your own reckoning of what is right and wrong - and make yourself (in your own belief) as wise as all of them.

That’s the problem with Protestantism is that it starts with the seduction of pride (“You can determine the truth all by yourself, and no matter what truth you come to, God must assuredly be helping you, because you pray to Him and put your trust in Him” - itself a self-proving belief). Even the Jesus says you should not tempt the Lord.

Hi,

Yes I totally understand where you are coming from. IMHO I think God sees us(believers) as a spiritual unity.
That’s just it. I don’t see Protestants as “true believers”…not in the fullest sense anyway. One cannot be a “true believer” while holding heretical doctrine. Yet most Protestants talk as if the “invisible church of true believers” exists independent of doctrine.

The Holy Catholic Church is the true Church. It contains the true faith and God ordained clergy. Yet it is made up of wheat and chaff, sheep and goats.

One cannot divide Christ by accepting the head (Christ) while rejecting the body (His Church.) Christ said whosoever rejects you rejects me and if they do not listen to the Church, let them be like heathens and publicans. It is not possible to reject Christ’s Church and purport to fully and truly walk with Christ.

Wow!!! How successful has this style of evangelizing been for you?

Living by example has worked far better, thank you.

I’ve been on sites that have tried to evangelize me by telling me and others how satanic Catholic Worship is, and it just didn’t seem to bring any conversions, no matter how much they believed it.

Take AllForHim for example. She’s spent about six months on this site and she’s asked some pretty good quesions and listened to the answers. Will we convert her? Who knows, but she’s still here asking questions.

If everytime time she makes a comment like she just did and she’s answered with the rhetoric you just gave her, I don’t think we’ll see her around here much longer.

You do the math.

I second the reply of NotWorthy. I have done Catholic evangelization door to door now for 5 years. What makes people listen and ask me to return is being pleasant and proclaiming with tact. Others who just want to argue will never be converted I have found from experience. Just some thoughts.

Yes, there is but like Kenny Rogers, you must know when to hold em and when to fold.
Just the other day in our parish bible class I found that one of the people who teaches RCIA did not go to Mass regularly and one of our Minister of the Holy Eucharist believed the True Presence was also in the communion of non-Catholic services. In this circumstance, I said some things that might have come on too strong and I felt bad later about it only because if I angered someone too much, I might have shut the door for further communication. Also, one can get a reputation of being confrontational and argumentative. Reputations are hard to restore. I have to remember to evangelize in charity because I once walked in someone else’s shoes also.

I always found it to be dishonest. About 10 years ago when I was at the University of Sydney there were many people from Christian groups who’d come up and talk to me and befriend me, but only insofar as they thought that they could get a convert.

They call this ‘love bombing’.

It’s exactly like selling any other product. It’s also exactly like when you go to the check-out of the supermarket and they ask “How are you today?” - maybe you think they’re genuinely interested.

I was one of the only Catholics in my class that was over 95% Evangelical Protestants (we live in the heart of the Bible Belt down here in Southeast Texas). They would bring up my religion and crack a joke about why I worship Mary, or laugh at my belief in the Real Presence. I’d ask them what their Church taught about Catholics (in regards to their joke). They’d tell me, and I’d gently explain what Catholics teach and why we teach it.

I never passed up an opportunity to explain our religion in these situations. The worst response I ever got was, “Wow, that almost makes sense”. I ended up being President of the Christians in Action club at our school.

Now if a Catholic is teacing improper doctrine, like mentioned above, that’s a different story. But I’d still try to get the correct doctrine to the person without offending them.

If people are disingenuous (?) with you, that’s their problem. Not yours. As I recall Jesus said, “Love only those that are geniune to you?”

No, “Love your enemies”.

Hi guys,

Thank you all for coming to my defense.😃 I truly do appreciate it. This is what I am talking about. We have differences in our walk with Christ but we still should love each other regardless. We are suppose to spread the GOOD NEWS to everyone, but if they dont want to hear it then like Jesus says kick the dust off your feet and move on. I ask many questions here because I want to honestly know what catholics believe. I dont agree with some of it but you will never here me defiling anyone. I will state what I believe but I will not argue about it.😦 To me arguing with people who believe in Jesus Christ and follow as best they can is a waste of time. Actually I believe it is sinful if the motives are to prove yourself right. My motives are not always pure so that is when I do not post. :o When my motive is to write in love then I do so.👍

God Bless all of you

Hi,

I have been thinking of leaving, but then someone like you shows me some kindness and that makes me want to stay.😃 👍 I have slowed down because some of these topics are no good for me to answer. Plus my family gets mad at me for being on too long.😦

Did I come on a little strong? Maybe. But it was a hurried post and perhaps could have been gentler.

She believes in an invisible church of “true believers.” My intention was to get into what constitutes a “true believer.” Too many throw out “church of true believers” without even defining what that is. However she might define “true believer”, she’ll make sure she fits the bill.

I might define “true believer” differently.

Thanks for the reply. I myself am searching for more of the truth of the faith that has been deposited to the apostles and revealed to the Church. Sometimes I may make a mistake or say something I should not, but it is not intentional. It is just I don’t know enough and have to rely in the collective wisdom and learning that has been given to you by the Spirit and the Church.

If only I’d actually made that claim, then your post would have actually addressed it and not been a straw-man

Silly me.

I thought that since you felt the need to post how people are only polite becaues they could get something from you (either your conversion or more busines at the grocery store) that you may be complaining that they were ingenuous (?).

No harm, no foul, eh?

My motive is to understand what the God breathed words are saying in context. Most of scripture is readily understandable without need of an interpreter.

Are all disagreements motivated by pride?

Montalban:
Even when Jesus tells us He’s not talking figuratively you want to suppose that He is.
John 6:40 For my Father’s will is that **everyone who
looks to the Son and believes in him shall have **eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."
**John 6:54
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has **eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day".

The parallel verses above have the same result, “Eternal Life” and **“I will raise him on the last day”. **Verse 40 teaches the reality of Faith and Belief for salvation. Verse 54 is clearly a metaphor. IF verse 54 is taken literaly then you have salvation by communion.
You disagree based on your own reckoning of what is right and wrong - and make yourself (in your own belief) as wise as all of them.

Again I disagree, Christians Love Gods word and desire to seek its Truth. When we see the organized church teaching contrary to scripture our motivation is certainly not pride.

Joh 17:17
Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

Ps 119:105
**Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. **

Ps 138:2
I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
