The IRA has formally ordered an end to its armed campaign and says it will pursue exclusively peaceful means.

In a long-awaited statement, the republican organisation said it would follow a democratic path ending more than 30 years of violence.

The IRA made its decision after an internal debate prompted by Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams’ call to pursue its goals exclusively through politics.

During the NI Troubles, the IRA was blamed for about 1,800 murders.

A statement issued on Thursday said that this would take effect from 1600 BST.

"All IRA units have been ordered to dump arms. All Volunteers have been instructed to assist the development of purely political and democratic programmes through exclusively peaceful means. Volunteers must not engage in any other activities whatsoever.

“The IRA leadership has also authorised our representative to engage with the IICD to complete the process to verifiably put its arms beyond use in a way which will further enhance public confidence and to conclude this as quickly as possible.”

The statement said independent witnesses from Catholic and Protestant churches had been invited to see the decommissioning process.

Ulster Unionist Party Sir Reg Empey, told the BBC’s World at One it would take time to convince the people of Northern Ireland that this was more than just rhetoric.

He said: "People are so sceptical, having had… been burnt so many times before.

SDLP’s Alex Attwood said that “11 years after the first IRA ceasefire these are the words that we needed and wanted to hear.”

“We now hope that the other paramilitary organisations on the loyalist side do the same.”

Denis Bradley, vice chairman of the Policing Board, said the statement was “saying the war was over” and people needed to acknowledge the clarity of it.

“This is enormous within the history of this island,” Mr Bradley said.

“Will Sinn Fein now take their responsibility and their place in policing and justice?” he asked.

When he made his appeal in April, Mr Adams said it was “a genuine attempt to drive the peace process forward”.

Republicans had been under intense pressure to end IRA activity after the £26.5m Northern Bank raid in December and the murder of Belfast man Robert McCartney in January.

Political talks last year failed to restore devolution, which stalled amid claims of IRA intelligence gathering at Parliament Buildings, Stormont, in 2002. The Provisional IRA’s campaign of violence was aimed at forcing an end to the British presence in Northern Ireland, leading to a united Ireland.

Hooray!!!😃

Of course they did the same thing in 1964, and by 1969 the Catholic ghettos were under such severe attack that people were writing “IRA = I Ran Away” on the walls.

Ian Paisley is a very wise man - he seems to be one of the few politicians who has not been swept away by the tide of euphoria which this deceitful manoeuvre has caused. Northern Ireland is fortunate to have him. Ulster is British - and to Hell with Bliar, Clinton and others as foolish as they are.

As for Bliar, he has so little integrity that he can’t recognise that Adams is an even greater liar than he is. Gerry Adams wouldn’t know truth, justice or peace if they gang-raped him in broad daylight ##

You think someone who calls the Catholic Church the Whore of Babylon, and the Pope Satan, is a wise man???

Gottle: Can’t let your praise of Ian Paisley go uncorrected! Talk about hate-filled - and your remarks about Gerry Adams reflect that same hate-filled ideology. Is that the way to negotiate peace by immediately spewing venom that one party has initiated a deceitful maneuver? I bet Paisley is not happy over the IRA’s effort towards peaceful existence between Protestants and Catholic citizenry - what is he gonna do when life is going well between the folks?

Ian Paisley is virulently anti-Catholic, and his support of groups like the UVF makes him no better than Gerry Adams. But maybe you support Loyalist groups who every now and then would hang Catholics for the horrid crime of attending Mass? Ian Paisley is a bigot and murder-enabler just as much as Gerry Adams.

Ian Paisely is inflammatory and unstable. Northern Ireland wants peace. They and we are tired of the war. Ulster is planted. Whatever folly started the divisions, the Irish need to move on and lead their lives. Let them. If you still have a need to beat a dead horse, then please beat your own dead horse.

I hardly think Blair has little integrity. I hardly think calling Gerry Adams a liar is called for. I hardly think condemning Gerry Adams in terms of gang-rape is the kind of sentiment needed on this forum.

In American they say: if you’re not part of the solution, then you’re part of the problem.

I have rarely been so thoroughly disgusted by this kind of hatred, bigotry, and deliberate inflammatory provocation. Either draw your horns back in, or I will ask the moderator to close the thread.

Peace takes effort. It takes a bit of self-discipline, courage, and teamwork. If you’re not up to it, if you’re not ready, if you’re not good and truly fed up with the blood, then step back and let the rest of us get on with our lives.

Hurray indeed. An all-too-rare piece of good news :)Mike
It feels like the Berlin Wall coming down. That much of a change. I didn’t realize what I had been carrying until the burden was lifted. I gather that, with the influx of EU funds at least to Eire, much attention has been shifted from the struggle to getting on with having a real life. I know that many people are just weary of the blood and would like to have something to hope for. Let’s hope that Ulster becomes a happening business community and trade partner.

“Ulster,” of course, is a nine-county province of Ireland. “Northern Ireland” is a gerry-mandered state consisting of six of those counties (more or less.)

Point taken. 👍

Do you have any idea of how many wars have been fought in the last 800 years to PREVENT that?

Ireland has a unique identity. To maintain that identity, it must be independent. It can be friendly with Britain (and many other nations) but it must be independent.

A few years back Scottish distillers were campaigning to get the English Parliament to pass a law saying, “It isn’t Scotch if it isn’t made in Scotland.”

It’s pretty sad when you have to ask a foreign nation to allow you to maintain your own identity.

Well Scotland is a part of GB, and many scottish are happy for that. I think that nationalism isn´t good, and if it´s supported by terrorism, less.
I know that the catholic identity is the responsible of the independence of Ireland, in Scotland, without this identity, isn´t independent. But I think that the catholic religion have to join, not to separate, and I don´t resign to think that England and all GB will be catholics someday.
Greetings

As a Catholic I am still distressed that in all the years of violence, the leaders of the Catholic Church did not say enough to condemn the violence used by the IRA.
Please don’t reply that the British soldiers or the Protestant groups used violence. Yes they did. I would expect their leaders to condemn that and they must share their responsibility for the carnage.
My point is that we are Christians. The methods used by the paramilitaries on both sides were un-Christian. They were terrorists long before the current Islamic terrorists.
For our part, our Catholic leaders did not speak out loudly enough against the use of terror and violence. If the Church had absolutley disowned the IRA they would not have had the power that they had for so long.
I condemn the modern day Islamic terrorists and I also condemn the UDA and IRA. They should be thoroughly ashamed of the leagcy of killing and brutality that they have left behind.
