Is Bill Donohue bad for the Catholic Church?

Bill Donohue isn’t the problem - it’s the people who think he is who really are.

Suppose a person claims to believe Jesus Chirst is the Son of God but denies him three times? He then asks people to follow Jesus .His credibility is low, and most people would be inclined to refuse his request on the basis of his damaged credibility. Correct?
That depends on how he, himself, damaged his own credibility.

That depends on how he, himself, damaged his own credability.
I think Bob was making the point that St. Peter did exactly that. . .and went on, at Pentecost, to set the world “on fire” for the man whom a few weeks earlier he had denied. . .no doubt many of the same people to whom Peter had denied Christ were there listening to him at Pentecost. And yet. . .St. Peter who had damaged his credibility out of fear was now speaking loudly in front of those same people, and in front of ALL people.

I also wonder how many people who rush to criticize not only Bill Donohue but indeed any people (including posters here) who do not conform to their predetermined view of how we ‘should be speaking’ might (I’m not accusing anybody, I’m only ‘speculating’) have been inclined to ‘throw stones’ at St. Peter and the other apostles at Pentecost. . .

The people Donohue is bad for besides those he argues against are those Catholics that believe that the church should bend over and take all kinds of attacks that are wrong and unmerited. The people that dislike Donohue are normally those that only believe in a Ghandi-like faith instead of a Christ like faith.
I agree with this post 100%.Donahue is a two-fisted Irish Catholic who doesn’t whinge, compain or cower behind a keyboard. He confronts. He PUSHES BACK.I swear some Catholics would be more comfortable being Buddhists. He’s the only Catholic that I’ve ever seen take on that bigoted hate sheet the NY times and win successively and successfully.People seem to dislike him for his personality.Tough.I’m sure there were those who were more than a little irritated with the "ravings"of that wild man of the desert St John the Baptist.I’m not saying he’s a Saint but he’s a better man than I am and braver too.
When he has issues with someone and the problem or misunderstanding has been cleared up,he PUBLISHES it,witness the bigotry of Rev.John Hagee. He doesn’t resort to ad hominum attacks like some I could mention because he doesn’t NEED to.He’s not Lace Curtain Irish and maybe that’s the problem.
Christ kicked over a few tables,so did Pope John Paul the Great in South and North America.Just ask the people of Poland and the former USSR about spiritual table kicking.
I’ve heard him say a few things that I found disrespectful but I’ve probably said or thought similar things and so have all of you.I’ve got a nice 3 pound rock here-anyone of you without sin want it?
He’d be welcome in my home and at my table anytime.

As I have said in previous posts, I am happy that Bill Donahue i sthere to defnd the church. BUT – he is making a total fool out of himself and Catholic with the Empire State Building/ Mother Teresa issue.

While I agree that Mother Teresa is being slighted in that the buildings owners will not honour her, even though they honoured the People’s Republic of China, the Catholic League’s approach to the situation is an embrassment. of the13 news releases in the past 10 days, 7 have been about this issue with the last 9 being cookie-cutter

MOTHER TERESA’S ORDER CONTACTED: WORLDWIDE CAMPAIGN BEGINS May 14, 2010

What is he going to release next, Hindu temples in Maine contacted? This is serving no purpose except to make him, and him alone, out to be the champion of this campaign.

As I have said before, when places like fark.com attacked Mother Teresa, Bill Donahue was silent when I contacted the League by phone. Now he is is merely acting like a swaggering drunk.

God bless

Tony
He ALONE IS the champion of this campaign.Have YOU signed the Petition?Everyone in my family has.Ad hominum attacks on people who are not here to defend themselves are reprehensible.“Swaggering Drunk”,I’d be careful with my choice of derogatives as he is proudly Irish as I am and that little innuendo comes perilously close to stereotyping or worse.
All campaigns or boycotts are gradual, well thought out and then accelerated.Look at how successively and successfully he dealt with Coors and their sponsoring of gay anti-Catholic bigotry.
Unsophisticated.Unbelieveable.

This garbage about him being divorce is one of the most ridiculous arguments I have heard. If you consult the Catechism, the Catholic Church recognizes the necessity of civil divorce in some circumstances. Unless one is personally involved and aware of the reasons for his divorce, the Catechism requires Catholics to accept this in the best possible light, not the worst.

I thank God for Bill Donohue and the Catholic League. It is a much needed voice in a world that cries for an inclusiveness that does not lead to healing, both physical and spiritual. Jesus had some harsh words for certain leaders of His time. What? Did everyone forget, Go and sin no more?

God knows I’m not perfect but I stand with all those who are repenting. It’s not easy but we all have our cross to bear.

God help us,
Ed

He’d only be a bully if he was successful. So far, he hasn’t been. I don’t like him, nor his delivery, but he has the right to do what he pleases.

He doesn’t speak for this Catholic though, and believe it or not, I probably agree with him more than I disagree.
He’s been tremendously successful.Look at the campaign against Coors for sponsoring homosexual anti-Catholic bigotry, for eliciting an apology from John Hagee for HIS bigotry. He has rebuttals printed in the NY times against their vicious lies and anti-Catholic Bigotry. He was successful in having a billboard company remove signs sponsored by the 7th day adventists calling the Pope the anti-Christ and the Church the Whore of Babylon.
He has practically single handedly defended Pius XII against the lies and calumny printed about him and the holocaust. He was primarily responsible for the failure of the Golden Compass a movie version of an odious book aimed at CHILDREN promoting atheism-so successful that the rest of the series of movies that were to get more and more anti-Catholic,were cancelled because of the publics refusal to attend, orchestrated by Donahue.

"He’d only be a bully if he was successful"This is the perfect definition of a non-sequitor…

Yesterday at Mass, there was an audible whispering going on when our priest began the
homily. He started the homily, but then stopped, looked in the direction of the whispering,
and just looked (for at least a minute or two) until finally the talking stopped. The other
priest just raises his voice and keeps going. I prefer the first, I think Bill Donohue would
also.🙂
You betcha! That is EXACTLY what my priest does too and boy do they squirm and turn bright pink. That’s what happens to the enemies of the Faith when Donahue responds.Do you know there have been secularist petitions to the NY times and the Post and other papers to SILENCE him?THAT"S how effective he is.Thank God for Bill Donahue and a big rasberry to his detractors-all here excepted of course.

So you think getting divorced(but not remarrying) is worse than denying Jesus??? Had St Peter taken your advice the Church would had been stillborn.
Whoa, cowboy, I din’t say that. I didn’t even know he was divorced. Don’t put words in my mouth with your personal view of life.

Whenever I hear Donohue, he strikes me as a crude, paranoid bigot - a sad representative of Catholicism. I’ve been impressed that you don’t hear a peep out of Protestants who are about to be shut out completely from the Supreme Court, and they are still by a majority, outnumbering Catholics in the US about 2-1.
Can you imagine if there were no Catholics on the Supreme Court? Donohue would be in a huge snit, with wild charges of anti-Catholicism. All those 6 Catholics and 3 Jews, by the way, were appointed by Protestant presidents. I think it's great that religion isn't an issue in this situation.

Crude.Paranoid.Bigot.Talk about character assassination and the worst kind of ad hominum attack.I’m astonished.

Then posing a “what if” situation and answering for him.Shame.

Considering the thread topic, I do not see how ad hominem statements could be avoided. Either positive or negative, all remarks reflect on him.

In my posts on this thread I talked about his accomplishments, not whether I cared for the man personally.I proferred evidence for my opinion.I didn’t say"Gee,I like him,he’s a prince of a guy".I stated factually his accomplishments and ergo my respect.

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion but ad hominums SHOULD be avoided as they make for poor arguementation or comment.

If one feels that Donohue speaks in a crude manner, is paranoid when it comes to seeing anti-Catholicism everywhere, and is a bigot with regard to other faiths - well, why shouldn’t one be permitted to express that view? He certainly is a public figure, too often makes wild charges against others, and thereby opens himself up to such criticism. I worry that he does more harm than good, misrepresenting Catholicism as though it, too, is crude, paranoid and bigoted.
Code:
I'm sure there are several million Catholics who could publicly defend the faith without the ugliness and hysterics that typify the performances of Donohue. That is my honest answer to the question posed by this thread. Disagree? Fine.

I wonder sometimes if the media contact him because he can be so sensational and they believe that he helps tarnish the reputation of the church??? It's like contacting a Sharpton or a Rev. Wright to represent the Black community, a Limbaugh or Beck to represent the GOP, or a Castro to represent all Latinos.

I dont think Mr Donohue is paranoid, There is much anti catholic prejudice out there. You are safe from that if you are a Nancy Pelosi or Ted Kennedy Catholic. But heaven forbid if you defend politically incorrect or unpopular Catholic teachings. He may be a little blunt for your liking, but he is not dealing with the most fair minded individuals either. One example that comes to mind was the story done by a newscaster in Chicago regarding the phony ordination of that so called WomanPriest. you will find a link to it on that thread. The reporter just reeks of condescension and subtle bigotry. That is why people like Bill Donohue are necessary.

Kudos to him for being in the arena…

Yeah. I think he has every right to speak out. But I don’t see him as a kind, gentle and sophisticated representative of what Catholicism is all about.
