The belly button in this painting is powerful evidence that Adam was the offspring of pre-existing creatures.

Mr. vail left out the ‘on the other hand’ part. A clipped quote taken out of context to favor evolution. Now where have I seen that before?

The evidence is growing that that is the primary purpose of this thread - NOTHING made you. You are not accountable to anyone for anything. These threads are not about science.

The Pope said the debate between creationism and evolution was an “absurdity,” saying that evolution can coexist with faith.

I respectfully disagree. I think trying to get evolution to coexist with Scripture is an absurdity.
The Pope respectfully disagrees with you, because to him and many others, including me, you don’t have to “try to get” evolution to coexist, it already does.
There is ZERO “scientific proof” that all life on earth evolved from microbes. There is ZERO “scientific proof” that a microbe evolved into a fish, that a fish evolved into a reptile, that a reptile evolved into a mammal or that humans descended from some kind of ape.
Okay, let’s find the goalposts here. What would that proof look like? If you could play devil’s advocate (no pun intended knowing your position on evolution), what would a proof of evolution look like?

If you can’t define the standards for proof, you’ve set up a definition which by itself proves you to be right. Like a casino that rigs it so they always win. You have to play fair.

What proof would get you to believe there is evolution going on?

Eh? There is no “on the other hand” text, that is all he said. If you have any source that claims otherwise, I’ll give you $20.

I wouldn’t agree with that claim, and I don’t think anyone on this thread has come to that conclusion.

Here’s some proof of evolution:

Bed bugs are evolving before our eyes:

“In just the last few decades, these city-dwelling insects have become almost an entirely separate species from their cave-dwelling cousins. In addition to their new penchant for the nightlife, today’s urban bedbugs have also evolved resistance to pesticides: They have thicker, waxier exoskeletons (to shield them from toxins) and faster metabolisms (to beef-up their natural chemical defenses).”

"In the book, Benedict reflected on a 1996 comment of his predecessor, John Paul II, who said that Charles Darwin’s theories on evolution were sound, as long as they took into account that creation was the work of God, and that Darwin’s theory of evolution was “more than a hypothesis.”

“The pope (John Paul) had his reasons for saying this,” Benedict said. “But it is also true that the theory of evolution is not a complete, scientifically proven theory.”

"Benedict added that the immense time span that evolution covers made it impossible to conduct experiments in a controlled environment to finally verify or disprove the theory.

“We cannot haul 10,000 generations into the laboratory,” he said."

How does this protein know how to fold?
In much the same way as a small molecule, say sugar, “knows how” to crystallize. It is determined by the forces between different parts of the protein molecule, and forces between different parts of the protein and the water that surrounds it.

Briefly: Some amino acids have side groups which are hydrophilic, that is, side groups like amines and acids that are attracted to water and to each other. Other amino acids have side groups which are largely hydrocarbon, like oil, and these are called hydrophobic because they are not attracted to water.

Just as oil and water don’t mix but tend to separate, the hydrophilic and hydrophobic amino acids tend to avoid each other, and the hydrophobic amino acids tend to avoid the surrounding water. That sets up the first stage of folding, which leads to hydrophobic domains (regions of the protein) which are shielded from water by hydrophilic surfaces exposed to water.

The later stages of folding involve the molecule jiggling and flexing by random thermal motion, and settling into the configuration that, loosely speaking, maximizes the attractive forces (strictly speaking, minimizes the energy associated with attraction).

Some small proteins reliably settle into the correct folded configuration. Larger proteins or ill-behaved small proteins are more likely to misfold, which is to say that some domains of the protein fold correctly but the domains join together incorrectly.

There was a point where the light didn’t work and the whole appendage was just a stub on the fish’s head. What survival advantage would just a stub confer?
It would have been for feeling or sensing the movement of prey in the dark.

According to evolutionary theory, this fish’s light didn’t suddenly appear, but evolved step-by-step, with each step of the evolutionary progression conferring a survival advantage. There was a point where the light didn’t work and the whole appendage was just a stub on the fish’s head. What survival advantage would just a stub confer?
That"s just the point I’m trying make and that applies to every creature we see today.

Great, but those are two different sources, my quote and your quote appear in different texts and different occasions of the Pope speaking.

aka adaptation…
Yep, likwise
Our war against bacteria is rapidly producing highly resistant strains, leading to fears of a post-antibiotic era. Similarly, many animals are adapting to pesticides, including fruit flies and even rats. In one striking example, the Colorado potato beetle has evolved to resist 52 different compounds belonging to all major insecticide classes.

About 35 years ago, I went to an Evolution vs. Creation debate at the university. Afterward I discussed it with my friends. As I saw it, Evolution won the debate easily. By a wide margin. Spike the ball and do a victory dance in the end zone. Strangely, my Creationist friends felt the same way about the Creationist side. All these years later, nothing has changed.

Time to move on to other discussions. I hope to see you all in the forums.

May the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus called the Spirit of truth, assist and guide us always toward faith, virtue, truth, and love.
